    - the harddrive is a slow version with only 2mb cache

    - the nvidia 6100 with 128 mb SHARED memory is hardly acceptable at all; it's fine for office stuff but then an onboard vga could do just the same - for any kind of gaming this chip is way too slow

    - only 1 free pci slot is an indication of a rather cheap/crippled board

    - i wouldnt go with a dvd-rw the manufacturer/model of which i dont know

stay away from it / dont buy a pc off the peg

So, NVIDIA focused on functionality rather than performance when developing its new generation of integrated graphics, and the new IGPs do not threaten the market of low-end 3D graphics cards – they have too low performance for that.

as Uncas said, build your own

I have no problems with my one. I am playing Doom 3 with no problems right now. I agree it is a basic Geforce but for all the games I have it as worked sufficiently.

I know there are some online computers stores that will allow you to buy some or all components and for a small additional fee they will assemble everything for you.

If it's mounting the mobo and cpu you are worried about, you could choose what you want, have it assembled and then add your own ram, video card etc. later. That way you can still buy exactly what you want.

I'm in Canada, and I was referring to a place such as Canada Computer's which has several retail stores in my area, and an online store.

For $15-$25 they will assemble a computer for you once you have chosen all the components you want.

Just seems like a better idea to me then buying from Best Buy etc and not getting the exact computer you want.

Here is a decent list of boutique vendors.

No problem, let us know which one you go with.

I think that is the most important question. At least from what I have learnt in my short time with computers.

buy the gateway, I tried ordering 2 similar systems, later on you can
                              add upgrades

the only question I am worried about is what in the heck kind of hard drive
it should be serial, if so it will most likely have 8meg cache and you will
have plenty of options to upgrade(another serial hard drive and another optical, all standalone masters).

a trip to the store should answer that question
