I read somewhere that it can take up to 36 hours for MS to get its updates out to everyone(?), so I solved the problem to my own satisfaction.
I use the Maxthon tabbed browser and opened up five websites that I check every day — with MS update one of them. Then I collected these sites as my "Primary" Group on the Groups tab. So now I open the browser, click Primary on Groups, and all the sites open. As soon as they all are loaded, I click on the MS Update Custom icon and let it load while I look at other stuff.
