i have 2 x 250gb maxtors in raid 0 set up and it takes about an hour to defrag them.

i have 2 x 80gb maxtors in raid 0 also and a 160gb maxtor , no problems with any of them. i guess we all have different experiences with them

It just proves that no make is better than any others now. Lots of people I know have had problems with WD, Seagate, Maxtor, IBM. One person will prefer WD and another will prefer Seagate. I will not buy another WD drive ever.

Like cars there some people who will never buy a Ford and some love 'em.

I think with any drive it is important to not having the thing spin at all times. I have mine set to go off after 10 minutes. No sense leaving them spin if you ain't using them. Sorta like leaving your car runninng in case you want to use it.

indeed, but dont get those nasty little 40x40mm fans like this one:

they make a hell of a noise and usually die within weeks

I find my new case excellent for cooling. It only has one 120mm fan at the back and sucks in air from the front over the all the components. My hdd temps don't go above 30 and 34 C.

My old case had two 40mm fans on the side panel and they made so much noise (and sucked in a lot of dust) that I had to unplug them. When they were on, the system temp only went down by 4 or 5 C anyway.

@UncasMS - I use a big one on the front blowing in with a filter on the intake, in addition to the PSU fan.

@drf - for a minute I thought the link was gonna show HDD installed perpendicular (vertical)...the HDD heads woulda loved that. Although I've seen some puters come with the HDD installed like that

depending on how much space one has in his tower i suggest to either mount a large fan (92 or better 120mm) to the side of the hdd/cage to cool your hdd directly

another way may sound weird to some of you but has proven to be very effective, easy and reliable:

get a decent 80mm fan with rather low rpm (in order not to make too much noise)
cut corks from any wine bottle in two halves and use 4 of them and screw them underneath your fan as some sort "feet"

place this fan right ontop of the hdd which you want to cool

i have done this with one of my machines and one of the drives in that pc because that drive is located in a cage where i cant mount a fan to either side

the cork wont vibrate, you can easily attach the cork to the fan it it really doesnt costs you anything at all and provides really decent cooling to that particular drive

and i cant emphasize how important cooling is to anybodys systems components

                                yep, neither does windows xp(ncq)
ncq/native command queuing or tcq/tagged command queuing takes places betweeen hard disk port (sata controller) and hard disk drive with the drive itself accepting and reordering the commands in order to improve performance and ncq can thus be used with xp
