Msconfig Start Up Concern

Hi,

In msconfig at the startup list I've noticed that there is a line where there IS a location for the item listed but there is no "startup item" name and no "command" information.

Is this a concern? I mean, I have other listings in there like "point32" and "bpcable"which DO have all the info for each field....so yeah....what do you reckon?

Yes!!

Go into safe mode and start up MSconfig. It sounds like something that is being hidden. Run all your virus and adscans in safe mode. Also try rootkit revealer and Hijack this.

you may also want to run "services.msc" and try to find suspicious services

I ran AVG Free (updated with all avaliable virus data) in safe mode and it did not pick anything up.

I navigated to HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run (This is the location listed for the startup item. The startup item and command info are not displayed) and I saw one entry for Steam (A computer game app) and one entry that said 'default' no data set.

So, I'm still not sure if this is bad or if I should pry further.

Actually, I have determined that it is a lingering entry from an uninstall of an app.

It's not sinister in anyway. Sometimes these continue to appear in msconfig with no startup item and no command, but just the location.

I get that all the time - first time it scared me but HJThis showed all was clear. I concluded it is benign.

The StartUp group seems to acquire all sort of trash.

One of my favorate sites I've used to check StartUp items

Luck with windows? As opposed to Mac or Linux etc? I suppose you're right. But most the time it's pretty good to me.
