Which is why I use VLC for AVIs, because it uses overlay which is useful for large bitrates.

wmp will use overlay as well, unless you tell it not to. don't think your graphics card likes vmr7, and especially not vmr9, so stick with overlay. bitrate is irrelevant here, think you mean resolution.

as mentioned in a previous post, if you install ffdshow, wmp will play avi/mpeg4 just as well as VLC

I meant bitrate as in uncompressed AVIs, or HuffYUV lossless (not even VLC plays those, have to use MPC for those.)

And I disabled overlay on WMP so that I can take screenshots in it (hence the MPEG2 one). Unless that's a bad idea.

it is, use overlay mixer. if you want to take screenshots, do it with mpc or vdub-mpeg2. don't see why you wish to take screenshots that way, on one hand, if not playing full screen, you'll have to crop off the sides which is a bit of a hassle, on the other hand if you're taking caps during fullscreen playback, you're upsizing the video to 1024x768, only to resize it again, just ending up with a lower quality image.

as for uncompressed avi's, really not practical, that's why we have avisynth. difference in huffyuv decoding between mpc & vlc depends what the decoder is in mpc

I have just found that with AVI files depending on the codec in WMP even on overlay mode it has a tendency to drop frames, and in VLC it doesn't.

vmr in most cases increases cpu load; how much it increases varies depending on system specs
