    Chewy looking for your thoughts

Looking to buy a new burner,

how do you rate this one Please?
    Thank you.

I am also a bit confused what is the difference between the OEM and the Retail? Is the OEM just the burner and nothing else? I keep seeing in the reviews about no cables no manual with the OEM yet it seems to be a bigger seller.

I know I'm not Chewy, so I'll let him talk about the burner, butas to the OEM vs. retail,

It should be that the only difference between a retail drive and an OEM drive, is that retail comes with software where as an OEM does not. That is also probably the reason the OEM sales more, as most people do not need the software.

yup OEM sales are higher cause people would rather pay for the burner, not packaging/software (usually crippled/old versions)

You can also forget about cables when you buy an OEM. No nice package either - only a plastic bag. Sometimes you don't even get that...

IDE cables. But normally you have some empty connections shipped with the computer that you can use. (It's those flat grey wide things - well today they can be in other shapes and colors).

Every OEM burner I bought from newegg came with Nero and PowerDVD and the lil cable for audio. I don't think it was because they were LiteOns.

They arrived in a plain cardboard shipping box, filled with them styrofoam beads, the burner in bubblewrap and the 2 disks and cable were in a lil plastic bag. The only thing I did not get that comes with retail is the mfrs box and IDE cable.

the newegg pictures show what comes with the drive,
Package Contents see pictures for details
one nec that I am going to watch is this one

which drive I would reccomend would depend upon what you want it to do, which drives you already have,
are your hard drives on serial?

I have an optorite burner right I have had no problems with other than I cant test the quality of my burns with it we learned a while back my burner is not compatable to those tests in nero.

I have 2 hard drives on this computer and a DVD-Rom= Sony DDU1612

I guess the reason I was asking for your thoughts is I remember a post a while back and I coulndt remember if it was a Nec or Benq, but I remember some burner that was somewhat difficult or should I say chalaging to update frimware.

For that $27.00 price I am hoping that is not this burner that is hard to update firmware for.

I have 3 computers, what I want to do is take the dvd burner that I have now is put it on my son's pc. (that pc right now has an older plextor 8X cd burner. Its old and way out dated (but it still burns cd's LOL )

Thanks to every one for the replies.

buy the benq 1650, it's a much better scanner, a very good reader even if a little slow, it is more picky about crap media, which you shouldn't even care about at this point in your battleplan.

                            firmware is a breeeeeeeeeze!

I've got a BenQ on the way and currently have an NEC 3540. Love the NEC and I'm looking forward to putting the BenQ through it's paces. As chewy stated, firmware for either burner shouldn't be a problem.
