    Shall I change my Processor?

I built a computer just five months ago. I wanted dual core but couldn't afford one. I put a AMD 3800 chip inside. Now, I can get a X2 4200 for £125 (£50 less than the 3800). I am using socket 939.

I only use DVD Rebuilder and Shrink which is dual core compatible. However, I use them a lot.

Is there much noticeable difference between my current 3800 and a X2 3800?

    Will it be worth it?

PS. I wonder why the price cuts have ignored the X2 4400 and is still well over £200.

extra L2 is too expensive, look around

kind of a waste of a newer 3800 to pull it

The processor would go to my Dad to build a second PC.

Are all socket 939 X2's being replaced? Are they just concentrating on AM2 versions until the next processor comes out?

I would still like to know how much off a difference the X2 4200 will be over the 3800.

the toledo's have 2 megs L2, the manchesters have 1 meg,

the toledo's are gonna disappear if I remember right

I just used the newegg to show you some dealers may have them(4400)
cheaper, monarch here in the states is more expensive for the toledo and
        cheaper for the manchester

I'd go with the 4200 manchester and a premium HS/fan if you have room

How much difference does 1MB have over 512KB per core? My 3800 has 1MB.

I would rather use the supplied fan. My case cools down wonderfully already.

I have an AMD 3800 X2 and it is terrific. You need to have 1Gb of RAM to totally take advantage and use multiple processes in DVD Rebuilder.

              I have 2GB of RAM.

I thought they might not be much improvement going from a 3800 to X2 3800. A X2 3800 can be bought for around £100.

                Another question.

                BTW, I just realised I have a 64 3700 not a 64 3800.

I just found out that my mobo can go up to a X2 4800. Is it worth paying an extra £35 for the X2 4600 (512KB per core) over the X2 4200?

I won't be able to upgrade again.

50% improvement at least for multithreaded apps

1 1/2 hr should go to below an hour

                  4200> 4600 10%, if something else doesn't bottle neck

                    I have a 3700 (San Diego) not a Venice.

                    I don't think the 10% difference between the X2 4200 and the 4600 is worth the £35.

If there is a 50% difference with the X2 3800 (should be as it is just two 64 3800's). Is there more than 50% with a X2 4200? I am thinking it is not that much as it is the same 2.2ghz as I already have with th 3700. However, there is only £15 difference.

                    X2 4200 at Dabs £125

                    X2 4200 at Komplett £125

                    X2 4800 at Dabs £159.95

the 4200 seems excellent value for money these days and it should have more headroom for oc'ing irc

I don't intend to overclock. I have never liked the idea of it.

I have spent ages trying to find a test on Tom's Hardware that compared the times for different AMD processors. I remember a test that showed trancoding and encoding times. I need to know if it is worth paying extra for something over a 4200. As, video is the most important thing I do. I don't want to waste money if it isn't going to be much faster.

Also, my old computer (XP2000) did DVD-RB with Procoder in an average 8 hours. I now can get that down around 4 hours with the 3700. So, is it safe to assume that a X2 will bring it down further to about 2 hours?

to lower a multithread by 50% you would need at least this cpu

Thanks, that it what I thought.

My Dad now doesn't want to build another PC (bought a projector instead). I can't take take the 3700 out and not use it. I can't even ebay it a it wouldn't even get £50 now.
