i don't think there was any yellow question mark there when i got this thing.

well i get these intermittent internet problems. every time i just turn off, unplug power from wall socket and ethernet, wait 5-10 minutes and it all works evertime. this may last for another 20 minutes or several weeks untill i have to do it again. chewy knows about this. before i replace anything i wanted to look into this. i'm pretty sure that wasn't there. just noticed it. it's in the list whether the net is working or not.
when i lose conn, i go to control panel>network connections>properties and the internet gateway icon is gone. only the LAN or High Speed internet (local area connection 3) is there. do the above shut down, wait. they both appear.

I had a similar problem a couple months ago. I kept losing my internet connection. I would have to turn my router off for 20-30 seconds and turn it back on, then I would be connected. This was a real pain because my router is in my bedroom and I use my wireless laptop in the family room on the other side of the house. This would also happen to my desktop pc in my bedroom. I finally deleted the connection in "my network connections" and setup a new network connection and this has worked ok to date.
PS good to see/hear ya LT

i stumbled upon something like that. it will take some work to try and find it again, but this had a wizard right? with 4 options at the start i think? i could try that

control panel>network and internet connections>network connections>create a new connection. create a new connection is at the top left of the window under network tasks.
"Pci simple communications controller" modem drivers not installed and or modem not working.
Your ethernet card/onboard will be listed under "Network adaptors". Probably Realtek.
A faulty modem/no drivers installed will not/should not have any effect on your ethernet "LAN" connection. Hope this helps.
card, i tried moving it to another slot on the board too. don't know where the modem would be. both pc's share an external modem supplied by my ISP.

It should be the phone modem. Can you unscrew it and pull it out from the PCI slot and then out it back, also looking at it, you'll be able to see the model and download its driver from manufacture's site. Just right-click the problem modem, uninstall it, and then reboot and install the driver if you have one
ty question: if this was the problem, why does it work now? it's been fine so far since last night. and this is an analog modem, is this even used, for what in my case? this network uses a cable modem.
