how can I speed up encoding

I haven't had much problems with encoding,but lately my externer burner has been analysing and encoding so slowly!
It's not the burner because when I hook it up to another Laptop the speeds fine!
I've uninstall & reinstall DVD shrink and restarted my computer and its still encoding slowly!!!
Does anyone have any suggestions or solutions to this problem?!!
