I have a few items left over in my control panel from an external hard drive that I am taking back. There is nothing left of it because it has been completely uninstalled. Two out of the four items will show the change/remove when you click on them but will not disappear when you go through the steps to remove. There does not seem to be any harm that they won't go, I guess for me it is from a more frustrating point of view that I have removed something & it's volume went but it's name didn't.
How do you "delete" items from control panel?

There's a registry entry but I think TweakUI can do it for you.
Also Spybot S&D's advanced mode can I think.

Thank you blutach, you solved half my problem. SpyBot's advanced mode took care of two of the four items in the control panel. The other two just sit there mocking me. When you click on them you do not get the change/remove option, it just shows the usage.

Then you need to find the registry entry.
It's HKLM/Software/Microsioft/Windows/Current Version/Uninstall
Do back up the key first by exporting it to the desktop as a reg file.

Go to Start, Find, Files or Folders, and search for all files with the extension *.cpl or go to C:\Windows\system32 and look for files with .cpl extension. Locate the one for the application that you want to remove. To do this, you may need to just double-click on each one till you find the right one. When you locate the applicable file, move it to the Recycle Bin or a folder, but don't permanently delete it. First, refresh your desktop by clicking anywhere on it and hitting F5. If and when the applet disappears from the Control Panel, you can then permanently delete the .cpl file or save it somewhere in your PC. Good luck, soup

Mock soup.
Well we made some more progress getting rid of more crap from Maxtor in the registry but these two still sit in the control panel. They do not show up on a *.cpl search & I cannot find them in C:\Windows\System32 but the advice is helping because everytime I get rid of a little more that didn't show up when I did a search after removing.

Wont it let you just delete it from that search window?Comment

They don't show up on any search & you can't remove them from control panel. They don't even show up on this neat little tool that I found.

I don't rem. exactly how I did remove them, but I know that it was a similar search as what ben suggested. Google is your friend
keep workin' at it!

Just some more random thoughts, but I won't be held responsible for what happensComment

They or anything to do with Maxtor are no longer in the registry. They are haunting me because I got rid of the Maxtor external. They need closure or something before they crossover to the other side. I keep telling them to go towards the light but they won't listen to me. BTW I have System Suite to take care of the registry as well, clean & defrag.
*controlpanel search, without the "."

Instead of *.controlpanel
