I just noticed that one of my 2 hard drives is making a VERY faint clicking noise kind sounds like clicking on and off i know its obviously not doing that but still. I have had one go out before and heard the rattle it makes this is totally different!! should i be worried ?? or is this common am i just hearing it for the first time bc i am hungover ??

I have heard them make a sound like you are describing when they are very fragmented, or a have alot of programs accessing at once.

I don't know if yours has the same sound that I am thinking of, but why not try a scandisc/defrag.

& maybe run a check for virus/spyware also, if there is alot of accessing going on.

      regards, katz

make sure to have all your important data backed up as a sound like this could just as well be a first indicator of a dying harddrive
in case a shrieking sound is comes next, dont waste any time: backup your drive and replace the disc

every now and then I screw up and my old wd raptor(system boot drive,
10Krpm) ends up being source and destination of some long operation.
it's working it's butt off and that's what I try to avoid at all costs.

now loud clicks are a warning to back up and prepare to buy a new drive and reload

you might have a day, a week or a month

I use an external hard drive myself as I only have one internal drive.

They usually come with some sort of copying software. Mine came with Retrospect 6.5. I back up my C drive once a month. I make sure I have no movies on it (because of space), scan it with a couple of anti-virus programs, use CCleaner, then defrag, and then finally copy it over to my external drive.

It gives me a clean picture of what I have on the current drive.

I have two internals but as of the last two weeks I have used an external to backup my system as well. I forgot to defrag though before the first backup so I had to defrag it individually.
