screen goes black during video playback. please help.

Hi there,
i have been experiencing some serious problems during video playback on my pc.
I have posted elsewhere without any help and looked all over the internet without finding anything to help me... maybe someone here can help.

Problem:
During video playback (fullscreen) my screen (EIZO S2410W) just goes black for no reason. I cannot do anything since the screen doesnt display anything but black, yet i should mention that i do not get any kind of error message what so ever. Also the OS continues working fine, and if i hit my space key to pause video for example the video stops (you can tell by the sound stopping, obviously i cannot tell by the picture since its black).
Another thing that happens quite often is that during playback my screen goes partially black ie. black stripes at top & bottom, if i quit my player it stays that way, taskbar is therefore gone, and i have to restart via taskmanager... also sometimes the whole "screen" (i mean the windows content, not the physical screen) moves down about 9cm during video playback. If i dont play any videos my system is fast and reliable just during video playback it really falls apart.


I have no idea what this is and how to fix it, i would hate to have to reinstall Win XP Pro all over again.

Also i believe this is source and player independant since this happens quite regularly and i have tried various formats and players: DVDs .mpg, .mpeg2 .asf .avi (DivX. Xvid etc..) it happens with any format. So far i have tried the players: VLC (0.8.5), PowerDVD 6, Windows Media Player.

In case this is needed i ll write down my PC configuration:

AMD64 x2 3800+ (dualcore)
2GB Ram (2x 1GB Corsair TwinX)
Asus Geforce 7800 GTX (ForceWare 91.31)
2x Samsung 200GB HD in Raid0 over Sata connection.
Asus A8N-Sli Deluxe Mainboard.
Eizo S2410W Screen, 24" widescreen
Win Xp pro.

If you have ANY idea what this could be and how i can fix this dont hesitate to post, i am desperate for a solution to this problem..

what vertical refresh rate are you running at?

dvi input?

which model of that monitor?

did you upgrade the drivers since this problem occurred?

the screens refresh rate is set to "default" so it should be 60Hz. (is that what you meant?)

yes the screen is connected to my PC via DVI.

What do you mean by "model"? as far as i know there is only 1 "Eizo S2410W" screen available (here is a link to the eizo website to exactly my screen: http://www.eizo.com/products/lcd/S2410W/index.asp ). i hope that helps.

since the problem occured i have updated the drivers of my graphic card (unistallation, reboot, then new driver) as well as all my screens drivers. also i have reinstalled all my video players (VLC & PowerDVD) and i have reinstalled all codecs.

I don't think it's a player or codec problem, something about the vid drivers and/or the monitor. I had one combination that would only screw up when I was watching any mpeg2, everything else was fine, finally traced it down to
a nvidia driver that was corrupted, probably with some remnant from a previous driver.

Make sure that refresh is set to 60Mghz, see if that review gives you any clues, there are 1 or 2 others here who might have an idea?

Have you tried to duplicate this problem with another monitor?

it's got nothing to do with codecs, as chewy said, drivers/graphics card/display problem

any chance you can test it another monitor? so we're clear, happens only with fullscreen playback, so windowed playback works fine? for how long has this been happening?

quick stab in the dark-- download media player classic, go options-->output, select VMR9 renderless and play a file

sry about the confusion with the models chewy, -k just means that its the black version instead of the white one.
I ll manually set the refresh rate to 60 now and will watch a movie i ll post again when i got any updates..

i only have this one screen unfortunately so i wont be able to test it on another one.

yea it only happens during fullscreen playback.. i ll try mplayerclassic, thanks for the hint.

btw: it usually happens once within a movie, so rough estimate would be after an hour of playback (might be a little longer but not by too much). this has been happening for the last few weeks now, but i didnt have the time to fix it then but since i am on my summer break now i got enough time to get to the bottom of this.

interior case temp after a sustained load might be usefull to know

actually for the 6 years i lived in NZ (in Auckland, same as meemo), it was quite cold. unless things have changed drastically over there since 1996, it's not nearly as hot as it is here

ofcourse doesn't rule out overheating. still, meemo also run drivercleaner which chewy linked to in post #4 and update drivers

first up: thanks to all of you.

overheating is not an issue, i ve got a big tower case and a good fan. average operating temperature (video & windows tasks) are roughly 36-40°C and yes, even though summer is coming in New Zealand it really isnt that hot down here
i m gonna try the media player classic out now with a video i want to watch, and well see whats gonna happen.
if it still goes black i will also use the drivercleaner, which i havent had a chance to download yet due to internet connection problems.

ok here is a little update.

i have just tried out media player classic, same thing happend. i then deinstalled the driver and then booted into safe mode, used drivercleaner pro and the reinstalled my nVidia driver.

still the same thing happens when playing back video.

any other ideas guys?

back to the 1 hour part, sure sounds like a marginal heat issue(complicated by drivers?)

would you download everest home and capture a sensor reading right after bootup and then another after say 30 minutes of playing a movie?

what exactly do you mean by "update"? i just installed the latest nVidia driver there is for my graphiccard via its installer (.exe file). is there anotherway that i should have done it?
