I was going to blame it on daemon tools and LtnRPC.exe, but looks like they are innocent, incd, gear and sonic? fight pretty bad.

you do have a software player for commercial dvd's?

I think Sonic PxHelp20.exe came with my recent update of Adobe Photoshop Elements from V4 to V5. They use the sonic burning software, which I've had trouble with in the past. I uninstalled APE v5; PxHelp20 disappeared; drive still won't work.

Then I tried Sony's Drive Test utility. Result: Passes ok with CD's (x2); Fails on Write to DVD's (x2)

. I think this could be a clue, so I ordered out a Plextor PX-760A, which should be here by the weekend. If all ok after the Plextor is installed I'll let you know.

I think it is super weird that the Sony Drive will lay any DVD fine EXCEPT one that has region protection. Does this make any sense to you? I first encountered this problem when I tried to run RipIt4Me and it couldn't load the DVD I'd put into the drive; then I found that Win Explorer said there was no disc in the drive, and we were off to the races.

Do you happen to have dvd43 installed, I once had a problem with it and my Sony 510 drive.

It seems like this problem is related to region protected DVDs; but I can't be sure of that.

I would be very thankful for any help on solving this problem!

I know this won't help but I thought I'd let you know, you're not the only one with that sinking ship. I've bought three DVD burners in the past because the other two seemed to die out on me. One stopped accepting DVDs all together and the Firmware failed and another DVD burner caused two problems where Minus discs wouldn't play in some machines after burning on them and I got a lot of broken picture and the Firmware failed to install. I believe DVD burners act strange in anyway after a year to two years and it can be very annoying when the Fireware doesn't do its job in anyway. I can get extended warantees on all stuff except for DVD burners because the companies know they go wrong after a couple of years at the most and they can't afford to fix them. I know Firmware is the first choice for the solution but that's if you can get the damn thing to install. I've only used Freecom DVD burners. Also, external DVD burners are best to have because if you have to buy another you can simply plug a new one in instead of having an internal one removed and a new internal one installed. I prefer external hardware all together.

When you get your Plextor 760A be sure to update to factory firmware version 1.05 or a hacked version for region free.

Also, manually enable speed read on your 760A optical drive, in DVD Decrypter, in Plextools professional (if you use it)

To manually enable speed read on the drive, hold the eject button in until the drive light blinks 3 times, then release the eject button and load the disk.
Othewise, the CSS protected disk that you are trying to read will lock in at a read rate of 2.0 and not what your resources on your computer can achieve.

I think v. BYX5 is the latest firmware for the 710A. I tried re-flashing with it, too, and it didn't change anything.

Thanks, Ed - that's very useful info and I will certainly do it. Is speed read enable a one-time fix, or do you have to do this for each CSS disc?

At the risk of beating a dead horse, can anyone satisfy my curiosity as to the technical connection between failing a drive DVD write test (writes CDs ok) and the inability to detect the presence in the drive of a Region 1 protected DVD, even if the drive is set to Region Free? (The drive detects and reads a Region Unprotected DVD, or any data DVD.) I'm an EE, but not up on drive technology.

I'm not sure what else to suggest here because as you know now, I've had the same problems. I never got past them except for buying a new DVD burner but don't you do that (at an early stage) because you are bound to have better luck than me where you'll save a lot of money. I believe Freecom are utter pants and so is their Firmware. I forgot you have a Sony DVD Burner and Sony is the best. I didn't know Sony make DVD burners until you posted your problem. I wish I got a Sony DVD Burner. Maybe Sony are better at creating Firmware (that does install). I do hope you fix your problem too soon because I know what you're going through. When I had these problems it was doing my head in.

Installed the new Plextor PX-760A. Cursory tests in Plextools Pro and movie playback show this new drive is working normally. I suppose the old Sony had just failed.

Hi there. I had two pioneer drives which were not reading the discs that I put in unless I rebooted the computor with the disc left in the drive. I had the drives for a couple of years so I purchaced two new LG DVD/CD/ Double layer drives and it still does the same thing. Anyone out there can help me please............denbo.

UPDATE

I would not blame the hardware drive, its the ripping software program that can not keep up with the latest copy protections. This is what is keeping you commercial disk from loading in your hardware drive.

I won't mention any software names, and I will use hi def software and hardware as an example.

There have been numerous copy protection changes to Blu-ray disks, such as BD+ changes, BD live changes, copy protections are changing all the time.

Even a hi def LG GBW-H20L Blu-ray reader/writer with the latest NO 2 hi def ripping program. Within the last two months this NO 2 software program no longer works with the latest copy protections.

All tests have been done on the drive and software program and there is nothing wrong with them.

Even the NO 1 ripping program does not have the latest BD+ protections removed yet.
