    My background picture is blocked

    Hello again,

I got some great info yesterday, that helped me(hopefully)fix a problem, so I figured I'd try again.

I was away from my computer for about 5 months. It was used very rarely in that time. My free subscription to Norton ran out in that time frame, so I had nothing blocking viruses, or anthing of that nature for at least 3 of those 5 months.

When I came home, the 1st thing I noticed, was my background picture wasnt showing up.
I clicked on properties, to try and change it, but it's locked somehow. I used to be able to scroll through a series of preloaded pics, along with whatever I had resently copied to my background, but now it wont let me scroll through those at all. The only thing it'll let me do under the "properties", "desktop" section, is change the color???
I tried copying a new pic to my background, and still nothing.

What's weird, is when I log off, and shut down the computer the background pic shows up for a split second. Same thing happens when I first log in. It'll show the pic, but none of my icons show up. Then it'll click to a blue background, and THEN all the icons show.

I've tried Mcaffee, and windows defender, to try and find/fix something, but I've had no luck. Someone suggested I start in safe mode, and run either of them there, and still nothing.

What can I do to try and fix this problem?

BTW, my computer is a Gateway 510 desktop, and I'm running Windows XP home edition.

I'll find any other info, if need be.

    Thanks in advance.

So if you right click on a picture, and click "Set as Desktop Background" nothing happens?

What was your old wallpaper?? It wasn't an active image was it?

I'm not sure what you mean by active image....Sorry.
        Here's the picture.

It's been the same one, for months.

When I try to click on that image, or any other image my background stays blank. I have a blank, blue screen. When I go to shut down my computer, it'll flash the pic for a split second, just b4 it shuts off.

When I start up the computer, it'll flash the picture again, just before all my icons pop up on the screen. As soon as they pop up, the background goes to blue.

Have you tried a system restore to a point when you last remember it working properly?

Yeah, I've done that quite a few times. The problem is, I can only go back so far. The last time I saw it working properly, was at the end of May, just b4 I left for Iraq. Then it sat while I was deployed, and that's when whatever happened, happened.

Yeah, as far as I can tell everything else works.

I tried to google it, but I have no idea what I'm talking about, so I dont know if I worded things right.

Sorry to see that you haven't resolved your issue yet Bro.

Have you run a spyware program since the problem started?
There's Ad Aware, it's free and very efficient in finding things that even Norton nor McAfee can't.

Free version of Ad Aware SE Personal

Also, if you still don't have Anti-Virus or a good Firewall, AVG free Anti-Virus and Zone Alarm Firewall (also free) are highly recommended by many members. I have them on one of my PCs and plan to drop Norton on my main PC and Laptop and go with all these because they have been so efficient on my other PC, and it' helps that they are free.

Well, that link you posted found some more stuff wrong with my computer, but still no luck with the background.

I'll do some more google searches at work tonight.

                        Thanks for the help

                        Anybody else have any suggestions?
