    Printer Question

I was thinking about getting a new printer. My old one is cheap and old and tired!! I'm thinking about one that will print on discs. Don't really care about the all in one kind with a scanner since I have a scanner already.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a good one?

    Thanks for the input!

I found a HP Photosmart d5160. Anyone had any experience with this one? It seems pretty decent for the price. Around $80.

The epson 340 is a very nice one; however I was *cheap* & went with the R220.
It also does a great job of printing on the discs.

The 340 has more "bells & whistles" & would probably be a better investment if you want to spend the extra $$$.

You can look into the new Epsons. The R-260 or R-380 ( 129.99 & 179.99 respectively) are very nice and will do what you want. They both have the new Claria Hi Definition Ink. By the way, those prices are factory direct from Epson, I'm sure you can do better somewhere else. You can look at them here I know others will disagree, but I swear by my Epsons as do most photographers. I know all you want is something to print on cd's and dvd's, so these would fill the bill nicely.
Blessed are they who expect nothing, for they shall not be disappointed!

The Epson R220 does discs perfectly, and unless you are a profesional photographer the photo prints are as good as any if you use good paper.
Buy one, you wont be disappointed.....best of luck

I know you not looking to spend a lot of money but if your willing to search and pay more you can get a REAL GOOD printer

look for refurbished printers for much lower price the Epson R800 is the one I would recomend to anyone.

Here is a review on that one:

A comprehensive review of how Fujifilm successfully brought medium format quality to wildlife photography.

Ya I know I choked on the price too but a printer like that will pay for itslef with a few months.
Just think every time you have pictures taken you only buy 1 8X10 and then scan and print your own for much less then studios and if you have a digital camera print pro quality every day for pennies.

                Thanks for all the input!

I got a new Cannon Rebel xti for X-mas so I want a decent photo printer as well as the ability to print on discs. I just don't want the all in one printer/scanner/copier type. Not wanting to spend a whole lot, around $100 give or take.

I have a HP computer and my old printer is hp 3620 (not much of a printer) so I was kinda looking at HP's. I've heard the epsons are good for disc printing but of course I want the best of both worlds, or at least the best for the $ I'm wanting to spend!!

I have the lightscribe feature on one of my burners now but I'm getting a little bored of it and thought I'd give the printable discs a go.

                Any other thoughts?

check out the epson store online for a refurbished printer that is a great way to get a high end printer for a much lower price, I have seen $800 printers go out for $160 shipped.

Somthing to think about, and keep searching there are ways to get the best without spending the most.

I'll check it out PA, thanks. Need to learn how to work all the stuff on the new camera to be able to put the printer to good use! More camera then I probably need but...... Just thought a new printer should accompany the new camera.

Seems like alot of people recommend the epson printers.

Once upon a time HP was ranked the best for printers in 2000 and 2001 epson came out with a few that blew anything HP makes away.

Since then epson keeps getting better and HP still cant compete when I comes to High end Pro quality.

If you dont go with an epson I would go with an HP printer what ever you do stay away form the Lexmark or how ever they are spelled, they arent that good and you CAN NOT get off brand name or refillable ink cartridges for them and they are some of the most expensive ones to refil.

HP and Epson you can get "Generic INK" that is actually higher quality then the HP or epson brand for much less.

I still say Epson all the way.

I do have an HP printer that does do some impresive prints but no where near as impresive as my epson.

If you do choose an Epson make sure you can get generic cartridges for the model you are looking to buy and check to see the size of the cartridges. Some Epson models have VERY small cartridges that run out of ink fast.
If you can't find generic cartridges for the model you are looking at. Don't buy it! Because that indicates that that model has micro chips embedded in them preventing them from being refilled so you HAVE to buy the costly Epson brand cartridges which most are very small and run out fast.
Other than that, Yes Epson's do print nicely.
BTW: That SSC utility that Katz posted will only work with some models Not all.

ALL of the NEW epson cartridges have the chips in them they started doing that back in 2000 7 years now. And all of the generics have chips in them that work the same as the originals do.

                            NO KIDDING!
I owned the very first model that Epson came out with, with the chips in them. I also owned at least 20 Epson's prior to that since 1984. And Installed and repaired more printers in the past month that most end users would own in a life time.

Speaking of expensive ink cartridges PA, my mother in law just bought a HP some kind of all in one printer and the salesman talked them into a seperate photo cartridge (?). She thought it would be used instead of the color cartridge but instead goes in to the place in the printer where the black should go. It is supposed to enhance photo's but was more expensive then the regular color cartridge. I would think you would use alot more color ink rather then the black which is cheaper.

Didn't realize there were "photo" cartridges.

I have a Lexmark all in one type that came with my desktop bundle that's still new in the box because I found out it doesen't use a black ink cartridge, the black is made with color ink. Didn't like the sound of that and I think someone here told me that the black would be a different color of black. So there it sits in the box. I was gonna try and sell it on ebay but they are a dime a dozen on there and probably not worth the time listing.......so there it sits, under my desk, in the way
