Well, they want me to get into a good college. My GPA is only 3.6 right now, and engineering/computers is really competitive and they fear I won't make it in.

I see their point, but fail to see how limiting my computer time will help. Especially if I want to go into programming.

They think I'm playing... I don't even have any games installed! True, I do spend a few hours on IRC and MSN, but other than that, I do lots of video encode, music video making, etc... and they think I just happened to be good at that when they needed a video made.

Best buy, Comp USA and Milwaukee PC all hire high school kids.
With a valid drivers license if they want to do house calls.

WOW does that sound familiar! LOL
7 years ago I started spending a lot of hours on my computer plugging away at learning all of the Microsoft office programs and a few others needed for the kind of career I wanted to change into.

My family said the same things ... you spend too much time on your computer and not enough time in schools. They all thought that I should have been going for a master in something that I could not afford to do but what I was doing did get me to where I needed to be to get into the field I wanted to be in.

Now I know my way around those programs pretty well. And some of those same family members are now swallowing their words as they are now all looking for a job now too and they do not have the computer skills needed for even a basic office job.

So who has the last laugh now?

I'm taking Driver's Ed at the moment so I should get a "permit" in 3 weeks. Think that would suffice?

No the temp wouldnt hold but they still hire high school kids for jobs that do not require driving.I am sure there must be somthing near you that would hire at 16 unless your way out in the country where you dont have much to choose from.

Lots of things from stocking shelves to fixing computers depends on what your skills are and what they need people for.

Best buy has the "Geek Squad" To that you do need that drivers license and inssurance for though. But there are 16 and 17 year olds that work that.

I have a friend that called that geek squad and a 16 year old high school kid showed up to fix her computer. It would be good for you to get a job like that while you are still in high school that will help you in getting better jobs working with computers when your older.

Shop online at Best Buy in your country and language of choice. Best Buy provides online shopping in a number of countries and languages.

Yeah but I won't have a drivers liscense, only permit. You have to have a permit for 6 months, so that would be what, September? I'm just gonna get a summer job so I can have some money to save/spend.

Even at minimum wage, we're talking at least $20 a day, that's not bad!

One wouldn't think you would need a drivers license working at Best Buy(unless you work for Geeks) or any other place that doesn't require you to drive a plain old State ID would work

For the Geek Squad you have to take a test in order to be a DA=double agent. The company takes care of the insurance, but you have be over a certain age due to insurance requirements. You can work the counter for the geek squad also. The employee purchase plan at Best Buy is excellent, but it is better on the accessories than on the computers Ect. Plus with a permit to drive in IL there has to be an adult present in the car at all times when the drive of the car has a permit. The adult must be at least 25 years old.

                        danny,

The geek squad trainging program is about 6 months = they pay you to learn what they need you to learn.

They will test you first to see what your computer skills are they will train just about anyone with strong computer skills. If your going to make a low wage may as well check into that at least that is pointing in the right direstion for you.
It would be worth checking into.

WOW that must be different then from state to state,
Here in WI they dont provide inssurance you have to have your own. And you only have to be 16 years old here.

IL must be tough if you have to wait to 25 to work in a job like that WOW.

Well, I could always bag groceries, but one reason I don't want to is because the whole freaking city goes to Kroger, so everyone would be like "haha I don't have to work"

Who cares what other people think once your out of high school most of those people you will never see again. Its a good idea to work while you're young that way when you get out of collage you will not only have your degree you will have work history and professional references which will make a difference when the time comes.

When I got a paper route at the age of 12 everyone laughed at me. NO girls ever did that in my home town. That didn’t stop me though. I was the first female to ever own a paper route in my old home town. I made good money too. My own money. Something to think about.

                            P.S.
Anyone that wants a career has to work, eventually. The ones with the most work experience will get the better jobs.

Wow, my dad just yelled at me and threatened to take my computer out of my room and was like "you're wasting your entire life on the video forums"
And he also keeps telling me to start on my eagle project, but he doesn't understand that you have to be a leadership position and the next time I can get one is in a few months!

He also says my grades are suffering, and when I told him the 2 classes I had B's in I now have A's in (which is true BTW), he just got even more mad and said he'd talk to my mom and see if she'd take my computer away.

What do you suggest I do? If my dad wasn't so mad, I'd be like "yeah but I bet I know 10x more than you and your supposed techies at work combined do about video", but that chance is gone.

                                Danny,
It is always best to listen to your parents. After all it won't be long an you will be off to the dorms. LOL

Sometimes our parents doent see things the way we do, sometimes they want us to get everything they never got or do the same as they did. But that doesnt always work for everyone. Your getting to that age... the age where you are too young to make your own choices yet to old to always be told what to do. no one person can ever tell you what you need to do only you know what you need to do.

Maybe do what he wants for a while and then come back to the computer you dont want your pc taken away.
