For some reason my computer always has an icon in the system tray on the bottom that says safely remove hardware. When i click on it it ask if i want to unplug or something my external drives. How do i get rid of this and could it be effecting dvd shrink? I dont want to do what it is asking me to do its driving me crazy and i want to get rid of it.
OT: but relates to shrink. have question

You have a USB drive. The icon runs a process that stops it and allows you to remove it safely instead of just ripping it out.
It has nothing to do with DVD Shrink.

If you have an external drive connected through USB port then the icon should reside in your system tray if the device is powered up.. If you don't have any USB device connected and powered up and you have this icon ,then you have a problem. As Blu stated,Shrink is not involved or affected.sigpic

Well that is strange because my daudghter's PC had a second hard drive (SATA)installed a couple of months ago & ever since that icon has been in her System Tray, she has nothing external attached to her PC. I asked about it & was basically told that it happens with SATA.

was her first HD is PATA ?, mine are all SATA and I dont have the icon, only when I hook up a D link then the Icon show upsigpicComment

if you have sata power(not the adapter) then sata is hot swappable
but
If the Serial ATA hard drive is not listed under the "Safely Remove Hardware" function, the motherboard or Serial ATA controller does not support hot plugging and the computer should be shut down and powered off before disconnecting the hard drive.Comment

Thanks, because that icon shows up (safely remove hardware), we could disconnect the SATA while the PC is running (Hot Plugging or Hot Swapping = The ability to add and remove devices to a computer while the computer is running and have the operating system automatically recognize the change).Last edited by soup; 14 Mar 2007, 11:22 PM.

since the "safely remove hardware" shows up with her computer, then the drive can be hot swapped
her mobo and controller support the feature
but don't test it on my account!
the whole idea behind this was giving sata the capabilities for hot swapping a raid 0 + 1 array,
where 4 drives are mirrored and striped and a spare kept on hand
server technology, I think scuzzi was the standardLast edited by Chewy; 14 Mar 2007, 11:22 PM.Comment
