I will suggest the same as Chewy said, two partitions on for OS and installations other for data maybe third for Archive if you want. This won't add anything to performance but much better for maintenance. If things got bad, I only format the C: drive without being afraid to losing data, just some settings that I can easily copy.

Is it imperative to either have two hd or partition ? I didn't do either and have 100+GB dvd and avi on my HD with my os and all applications
Yeah, I would sure recommend at least 2 partitions, keep the OS on one by itself; as AhelpingHand stated, much easier to reformat C: drive (faster too with a smaller partition) & not risk losing data on the entire drive, in case something goes wrong, virus, etc.

30-40G on OS and programs partition was spot on. Programs these days come bigger and bigger in terms of MB's. Nothing can beat externals can bring with you anywhere. It's ironic though you mentioned 400-500G Windows XP only read the first 111G anyway

older bios's, win 2k sp2, xp sp0 all used 28 bit lba and have a size limitation
of 137 gigs, the new standard is 48 bit lba and the limit is in the tetrabytes

            a good read on this

Does some one have a link to partition an active drive without formating?

And does someone have a link to remove a partition without formating or a clean install?
