I will suggest the same as Chewy said, two partitions on for OS and installations other for data maybe third for Archive if you want. This won't add anything to performance but much better for maintenance. If things got bad, I only format the C: drive without being afraid to losing data, just some settings that I can easily copy.

30-40G on OS and programs partition was spot on. Programs these days come bigger and bigger in terms of MB's. Nothing can beat externals can bring with you anywhere. It's ironic though you mentioned 400-500G Windows XP only read the first 111G anyway-----------------------------------------

older bios's, win 2k sp2, xp sp0 all used 28 bit lba and have a size limitation
of 137 gigs, the new standard is 48 bit lba and the limit is in the tetrabytes
