want to buy a laptop, but money is problem:)

finally im thinking of turning my back on PC, and want a laptop. now i dont have any experience on laptops.
but i need as powerfull system as my pc or better.
my pc is P4 3.0 Ghz 2 gb ram

i do video editing a lot [home made mostly], burning, and rarly few games.
can somone tell me what should i go for? core duo or core2 duo or anything else which is probably cheaper.

oh should be round US 1000 $. [100 up / down maybe]. brand isnt a problem, but iv heard toshiba is better, then dell or HP. used or refurbished is also ok i guess?

I also had a look at iBuyPower.com and cyberpowerpc.com and they have some decent laptops, sometimes those boutique PC's aren't so bad.

If you can afford it go with the core 2 duo which is the second generation of the chip.

ok iv checked 2 dv2000 and dv6000 from HP. bothare decent, but i have to check if both also have dedicated graphics or not.

They will be just like any other company and probably outsource to get alot of the other components, assemble it and put their name on it.

I did went for HP DV9000 series. I like the specs, Imprint finish so finger mark free, so too the pad no danger of fading not like sony's. Cooling system was very good lots of open grills for air to circulate (5 in total). Separate number pad. Only problem battery drain time. Not sure of the smaller screens models But a perfect Desk Top replacement designed for home use.

dv 9000 was little further for my pocket, iv bought dv 6 series. 1.73 core2duo 1 gb ram will be adding 1 gb more later. will post pics when i get my hands on my new system[thats tommorow ].

one problem ill be going back to xp i think as my laptop has vista . my cable just keeps disconnecting on vista and im sure my cable's smart ppl doesnt know how to fix it.

A little advice I just got after having trouble with my laptop is not to leave the AC adapter plugged in when not in use.

I got a laptop in December and was running it 24/7 like a desktop until the first week of May when the AC adapter thing on the mobo went. I was told it was because of the heat generated.

So if your going to use the laptop as a desktop replacement I suggest unplugging the AC adapter when not in use. It is also a good idea to remove the battery when running on AC and not charging the battery.

I think its too much for a lap top to run 24/7 due to the heat generation and heat dissipation issue. I suggest a good lap top riser helps for good base clearance and air circulation. But the HPDV9000 got a good base air vents not sure of the Dv6000 series if the same base profile. I am curios is there a downside or any advantage of running a PC/LT 24/7 if you are not using it? I know terminals becomes loose when subjected to repeated cooling and heating due to expansion and contraction. I always turn it off to save a few wattage.

I had my laptop on 24/7 because I was running F@H on it. Compaq fixed it under warranty with no hassle at all. I won't run it 24/7 anymore I especially with 100% CPU usage on it with F@H running for 4 months straight anymore
