All of my folding is done on the laptop...I haven't had any issues as of yet. I've got 5 vents for cooling and I don't think it get terribly hot and I prefer to leave mine plugged in running off of the house juice. This will probably come back and bite me in the booty, but I've been using the same way for the last two years. It's an HP zv6000 BTW...

Mine was running off the house juice too with the battery out. The Compaq I have (C301NR) has only the 1 3" wide venbt on the bottom where the fan sucks in the air and a vent at the back where it blows out. The thing never felt hot to me and never shutdown by itself. It was running shutoff and would not restart. Maybe mine was built on a Friday or a Monday or maybe just because its a Compaq or maybe a gremlin got me I dunno

I got it to use for surfing from the family room, email and just regular stuff, no ripping or nothing with DVDs or video.

I had the PIII 733 and AMD XP 1500+ folding and the laptop was the quickest @1.73GHz. I did 1 WU and liked the speed and never shut it off after that
The SanDiego and Brisbane boxes are the man folders now along with the AMD 1500+. The laptop will go back to normal duties. I did squeeze 1 WU in since I got it back just to test it out. Compaq said they went to replace the adapter on the mobo, messed it up and put in a whole new mobo.

I actually bought mine to take to work with and burn and watch movies...so yeah, shame on me. LOL

I've read where this AMD proc is supposed to be too hot for a laptop since it is really a desktop proc, but as I've already said I've had no problems with heat that I'm aware of. I started gathering a parts list the other day on NewEgg, maybe I'll start up my own build thread within the year, but I really don't see it happening this year and I'm really happy with my 4 year old VAIO anyway.

Well, mine was over two months old 320 gig HD and 17" widescreen. I have to use the house juice most times as the battery only last an hour. HP DV9288ae not really designed on the go not unless you have 3 batts with you. And too heavy with the extra huge HD. I watch film with it but no ripping or burning do it all in the desk top so I am excused Chewy. I used it mainly on the breakfast table for early morning dose of WWW. It even came with TV tuner but never installed it as I don't need it so with the two remotes.

video encoding and folding are excellent stress tests

newer high power laptops should do OK if you can keep them cool enough

I use a Netgear router...it was a pain to set up until I found out all I needed to do was change the channel it operates on, been nothing but smooth sailing since.

I got it all free from my provider(Orange Live box 100), up to 8 meg speed for £12.99 retention deal. You see, I complained and threatened to move to other provider so they given me a £5 off plus free router and 10 countries free call. I am worth it!
I still got to work out how to print wirelessly(via router) though. I plugged the printer USB into the router but nothing work. Maybe I have to ask them or anyone knows how?

I think you need a print server for that type of printing...you could give Network Magic a shot (not free) or Windows has it's own network management built in. I had a look at doing this, but I lose patience to easily.

On the router manual it says. Plug in the printer to the USB connector of the router and you can print anywhere you are in the house through the router. That's all no instructions how to do it.
