FileZilla problem

I have two problems with FileZilla:

1. I set a default starting local directory for each of my site profiles, but when I try to connect to that profile, the hard disk thrashes for like a minute, as if it's looking at all the files in that directory/sub-directory. The directory does have numerous files or large size.

2. Uploading seems to break for large files every minute or so. I"ve been having problems with my ADSL connections, but my other FTP software works like a charm (uploaded 120 MB file, whereas I have trouble uploading 2 MB files in FileZilla).

Yes, Windows XP. The disk thrashing seems to happen only once per Windows session, possibly something to with directory listing/caching.

did you try different CLIENTS as well and how many files are we talking about?

I'm referring to the FileZilla client, not the server, sorry for not making that clear.

I normally use WS_FTP, but I'm trying to switch over to FileZilla. WS_FTP doesn't have this problem. I'm using version 2.2.32.

I have narrowed the problem down a bit I think. What happens is that if this is the first time I start FileZilla for this Windows session, I use the local site browser in FileZilla to navigate my way around and this doesn't cause a problem until I navigate to "C:\Documents and Settings\" and then expand the "My Usernames" folder (the one that contains "My Documents", application data, temp files ...) - the disk thrashing then starts. If I just click on this folder without expanding it (I can still see what's inside this folder in the window below), nothing happens. I do have lots of files in there (52,000 files, 3 GB), but expanding any other folders, including the "Windows" folder (21,000 files, 4 GB), doesn't have the same effect (there is a 2 or 3 second worth of disk access, but that's it). It doesn't matter if I access straight away "C:\Documents and Settings\My Username\" or expand any of the sub-folders within it (eg. C:\Documents and Settings\My Username\My Documents\dvd\myfiles"), it will do the thrashing but only when I access it for the first time.

I even moved a directory out of "C:\Documents and Settings\My Username\" so that it only had about 20,000 files (2 GB), but it still did the 30 second thrashing thing. So it looks like it's not really about the number of files or their sizes, but something inside the "My Usernames" directory that sets things off. I'll try to clear my temporary files to see if this helps or not...

admin have you tried FileZilla Settings->Connection->Directory Cache to
disabled? I have FileZilla 2.2.30 and don't use it that much but it seems
a candidate to bog down your system if you are browsing a complex site.

I've disabled Directory Cache, although that seems to be more for remote directories than for local ones. FileZilla is really perfect for my FTP needs, much better than WS_FTP, except for this issue.

Hmmmmmm, did you also search FileZilla forum on sourceforge?
I'm only a casual user of FileZilla so I don't stress the program.
But if you are running into this issue chances are someone has
reported it there.

I think the problem is more to do with Windows Explorer than Mozilla (which probably uses explorer for the local file browser) - expanding the same folder in Windows Explorer with "View -> Explorer Bar -> Folders" seem to have the same hard disk effect, although not as bad. Using explorer without the "Explorer Bar -> Folders" seems to be alright. So this is probably Windows related, and there's probably some option that will make this all better.

and maybe try turning off drive indexing? it is a local drive?

You can kill drive indexing and still have super fast searching using this
Windows port of the Linux "locate" utility:

I've used it on XP SP1, XP SP2, and Vista Home Premium
without any problem. It has a built-in scheduler or you can just run
it manually. I keep my drive at around 80% free space but even so
it's obvious to the naked eye that this app updates its database much
more efficiently than the Windows OS indexing.

I've found that it's not drive indexing, of Offline Files or even Norton that is causing the disk access. I kept task manager open while it was accessing, and CPU usage was at basically 0%, with very little relative activity in terms of memory usage (I have 1 GB of RAM) or page file size.
