Hi.. I have just added a 320Gb external HD to dump movies and pics on. Have been succesfull in copying D partition, which is HPs backup, and thought this would be a problem, but it was not. Now I am trying to copy ALL of C drive, but come to a stop cos something not obvious is using a program.

Is there an easy way to copy the whole of C, and just how does one partition the new disc, can find nothing that mentions this...... Thanks in advance from a dimbo......

Hello Tony from the land of the Ashes and the World Cup. Some hidden files are used by Window$ - eg NTUSER.dat and NTUSER.dat.log (under Docs & Settings). There are some others, too.

A program called VBTUCopy came along with the external that I bought after the Maxtor One Touch wouldn't copy everything over. Even although this drive was sold under ComStar it is in fact a Maxtor but anyway this VBTUCopy button triggered copy utility transfers everything over.

I have heard our Computer Expert using software called "GHOST" ... it makes an "identical" copy of your hard drive.

I personally have not used it. So ...

norton "ghost" or former powerquest's (now symantec) "drive image" are good cloning tools

you may as well give these freeware tools a try:

DrvClonerXP version 2.1
and
DrvImagerXP version 2.2

Thanks. Have got DRVcloner.. It appears to want to make my 320Gb into a 200GB duplicate. !!! Will I have a 100Gb black hole ???
Since I am half way through a 20Gb slideshow (lifetime pics and slides) I will wait till thats done and files deleted, then try. Thanks for the advice....

These progs typically use a compression algorithm Tony. Don't be afraid. Try it!
