hi ed thnx. excuse the delay in getting back. i don't always get e-mail notifications.
i know how to burn 2 cd-r, and dvd-r 5, or 9. i just don't know how to burn executables to the cd-r. do you go to add-remove programs, or do you copy the program from the icon on the desk top. i don't know how that goes. plse. explain the process of burning the executables in data format so i could do it. i have imgburn, and all the other great freeware goodies. and you're right i don't want to have to go back to the sites. been there. done that. been lucky i haven't crashed or caught a virus 4 a while now.

I create a folder and call it installers, right now I keep several copies, core smaller ones go on a usb jump drive and on CD, larger ones can be burned to dvd.

look at the guide for imgburn on their main site for build

My procedure for backing up executibles on this computer, and there are 53 of them.

I download the software program executable icon to the desktop. I then install the software program on the computer. Then after the software program is cleanly installed on the computer, I click and drag the executible icon to a folder located at my computer/my downloads.

Approximately each month I backup the executible icons to a 700mb CD-R disk. Your burn the executible icons to a CD-R, DVD-5, DVD-9 disk in the standard manner.

You have already installed the the executable icon on your computer, they are in the form ready to be installed anywhere you choose, like if you loose your hard drive and you don't want to go back to 53 different website just to pick-up the executible icons.

I am going to try SP 3 beta, but I am going to image the hard drive first. That way if it crashes the OS I can restore the drive again.

think updating from safe mode, norton's is breaking a lot of computers as it tries to protect you

and I will wait for final release, not candidate so I can slipstream it and then run as a repair disk from boot cd, it don't get no safer than that

Thanks for reminding me Chewy, I learned that a long time ago about updating in safe mode. But some times I do get lazy.

thnx ed. thnx chewy. i just downloaded and saved several executables to a cd. mainly all my burning apps., which is really all i have and want right now.

1 quick ? in order to open them up 1 day, i know i put the cd in any 1 of my drives. if i have auto play off as i do now, it won't open up the cd correct? i need some player of some sort to open up the cd correct, or is there some way i can open it up w/out a player?

i tried putting it in my E drive and then going to it and clicking on open, but it wouldn't open it.

if they were actually burned, you should be able to open the burned disk?

what software did you burn it with?
you made a data cd? what brand of blanks on what burner at what burn speed?
