Heh!!! Sometimes Laziness does pay off!!! I found that NirSoft MyUninstaller freeware not only lets you list applications sorted according to installation date, but it will export the list in HTML!!!! Instant log!!! Now I just put a one-liner in a text file with the date and type of last backup!!!

thnx to both of you for the tips on disabling services. the system folder suggestion is well noted as is the manual logging of services before disabling anything. i'll also keep in mind that freeware on the listing of applications. i'll put this together 1 step at a time like you guys suggested. this is a burning's man paradise. the wealth of info here is priceless. keep up the good work.

blutach, thnx for this tip. definitely straight to the point. my trial and error session w/this power clean-up will at the least be greatly shortened if not totally finished.

that routing and remote access, i know the remote access has to deal w/let's say, the service i have w/dell where they remotely fix any issues. does it also affect the trial versions of any programs like dvd20ne where they keep track of how many days you have left?

is routing and remote access 1 service or 2 separate ones?

thats just apps, im talking about services (Start>Run>services.msc [XP] pr Start>services.msc [Vista]

These are the ones I document throughly when I disable/Stop a services

Apps I prolly should document too as liek with XP and Vista, Installing Nero in combo with XP or Vista and a SB X-Fi = Urge no worky but alas after the MTV (Urge) Techs blamed MS, and MS tech blamed Creative, and Creative blamed MTV, funny no one blammed Nero

Got an Vista update? might have been WMP update but it all works now

I still wonder why i bother with tech support, as tehy never really help

NightbladeXX I know what you're sayin'. I sorta' spider-web to learn so sometimes it looks like I'm goin' off on a tangent(when actually I"m a mastermind with IQ too high to measure.)

Now that I'm messing with these image backup softwares I'm always lookin' for ways to make it easier to retore my machines. For some reason I also forgot(my memory is terrible) about SIW freebie!!! I found it again and it exports a log of all system info including services and their current state. Very cool!! Of course if I was managing a field of machines and not just my home systems I'd do things in a more organized fashion.

ed i don't even know if i retrieved these files the correct way, but i did find them and my pc wouldn't let me delete them. it said they were being used by another person or program. you think my zonealarm firewall is preventing me from deleting them? also when you guys post a location for a file or folder what's the usual/or best way to retrieve it? every other suggestion was taken and has working. thnks.

                                Only disable system restore if

                                1. you've fixed your computer and you are sure of it and those restore points would only make it worse, for example reinstalling a virus.

                                or

                                2. you feel comfortable without that backup and want to recover space and improve performance

you can turn it off, reboot and then turn it back on, manually setting a restore point
