sata hard drive but ide rom and burner?

my dell e310 has a sata ll hard drive, but the dvd-rom and the dvd-rw it came w/are ides. is this possible? 2 different types of data transfer on the same pc?

also my power supply unit came only w/1 power cable for the dvd-rom w/an extension that connects to the burner. does this in anyway decrease performance? the only other power cable available is a p7. the power cable for the dvd-rom is a p3 or p5 as is the power cable for the hard drive which is a p5.

dell techs told me that they're trying to eliminate clutter by using the least amount of cables in the tower.

sounds like they're trying to save $$$ on extra power cables. i need all the help and/or suggestions w/this.

p.s. if you guys don't here from me for a while it means i took this pc and threw it out the window!!!

hi tran. so it's normal then to have that kind of set-up on a pc? just didn't make sense to me having two different data transfer ports, but then again i'm new to all this pc stuff anyway, so maybe it is par for the course.

pata(ide) is slowly being retired as sata is implemented, unfortunately that process is very problematic

as BR7 found out with his power supply

hi chewy. thnx for that tip about the conversion process from ide to sata. like br7 i too had to get a sata power adapter. all for naught as i had to return that sata lite-on. experience is the best teacher, but i think learning from others is better. you did suggest i go w/ide burners for now.

do power connectors whether ide or sata diminish the power supply to whatever source they're connected to? ie:dvd-roms, burners, hard drives, etc...

every connection, added, diminishes/weakens the power

the issue is how much, if your 5 volt and 12 volt rails are strong then it won't matter

chewy thnx. i figured that it would in some capacity. what kind of voltage do the rails from the power supply unit provided by pc manufacturers such as Dell, etc. etc.. come with? in my case i have the dimension e310. is the standard having both 5 and 12 volt rails? how is their strength determined?

                        there's a sensor under computer

                        should show the voltage rails

some bios have it under hardware monitoring?

+/- 5% is good, 10% not so good

                        more bad!
