well it justs gets more complicated, your bios is way old? what brand of 512 meg ram sticks are those, the crucial ballistix I reccomended, if so they are not being identified well with everest?

what model of compaq/hp is that

    is this your motherboard?

Did the OP check out Compaq support site? If it still exists there should be quite a bit of knowlege base stuff as well as fixes and howto info. Worth a look just to see if there's any hits on the same symptoms. Might even be a step by step how to upgrade RAM on the particular model.

well let's fill in some details, did you perform a clean install of that new version of windows or run as an upgrade or repair disk?

I originally reccomended pulling the old ram if you bought the new premium, there's no point in asking for advice and then ignoring it

Regardless we might have to update your bios, they specify that for upgrading to vista and other things

We can try a couple of things next but you will have to follow directions exactly, otherwise we will be just spinning our wheels

looks like we have a catch 22, we might have to put the original memory back in, pull the new, and update from safe mode

this is one of the reasons I don't like windows based bios updates

is the xp pro 32 bit a bootable cd?

does it have sp2 already in it?

we need to go back to the 32 bit windows xp, either home or professional

your bios isn't ready for vista so I would assume it's not ready for xp 64 bit either?
