Computer had been Hacked what can we do please!

    Hello,

I have a friend that seems to have an internet stalker its her X husbans new girl friend. The problem now is she has hacked into my friends system, and is screwing with everything on her pc from her chats to her homework.

Outside of going to law inforcements what can she do to STOP this crazy person from being able to continue to hack into her system.

She has many things on her pc she really shouldnt such as SSI # and all of her school papers are all on her pc.

Any help on this one would be great thanks,
    Carla

One of the ways this would be possible would be a trojan, is her computer secure?

      Start the malware/trojan/AV scans

firewalls are not user friendly, simply the fact that she has been hacked would indicate she's a little niave

she needs to eliminate the malware first

if someone gets thru a router and windows firewall then they have to have a "key", some program that let's them in

What is she going to have to do to eliminate the malware? Thanks

This is unfamiliar territory to me.

If it were me, I believe I would first disconnect from the internet & backup/save any critical files before things get any worse. Then follow Chewy's advice as far as the scans, etc. If it is really infected/hacked badly by a knowledgeable person, it may be easier to just reformat, at least that is what I would consider doing. From there, I would start to build my defense/security before reconnecting to the internet.

However, judging from your friends' apparent unfamiliarity with pc's & security, she may well want to enlist the help of an experienced user, especially if she insists on storing personal info. on it. An unprotected pc with sensitive information on it would be a hackers dream!

the hacker probably IM'd her the trojan that infected her computer

there really should be a test and a liscense to own and use a computer

                    just kidding, well maybe not

course as many times as I have hit by driveby malware you'd think I would know better

Well, that's just great. My son has started using MSN messenger, & he does get pictures from people sometimes...What protection is there, other than keeping the antivirus pgm up to date?
Also, aren't they all named w/ a double extension, such as image.jpg.exe ?

If that would be the case, it would be easy to spot...

only if you have "show file extensions checked" and know that .exe or .bat or .pif etc are dangerous

                            we assume too much

Ah, yes... I will have to make sure of that, as by default they are not...

Actually, if she is being harassed by an internet stalker, couldn't she get the authorities involved? It almost seems that this would fall under a terroristic thing? Where is LT for some legal advice when you need him?
