I have heard of programs to trace back to a hacker, one of those and then filing a complaint with their ISP might work?

I don't know much about hacking but if the person got inside
the system but didn't actually destroy it then are they running some
kind of "dirty trick" script designed to be annoying?

If they think they know who is doing it then maybe that's
what's stopping the person from being totally destructive. If these are
canned scripts then maybe there's canned defenses? I'm just
speculating.

Unforutunatly there was much damage done by this hack. At one point it took my friend over 14 hours with tech support just to be able to boot the pc up again and many files are gone and some are changed. She is in school on line to earn a masters degree in Criminal law and she had over 10 papers that were tampered with causing her to begin failing some of her classes and she was hold a strong 4.0 until the hits.

This hacker is also gloating about how bad she got her on a blog made public with he IP addy which has now been changed.

This has been a night mare.

As far as reformating she has no clue how to do that nor do I as I have always had someone to do that for me. I guess I may be time for me to learn that myself as well.
Lets put it this way when she gets problems with her pc she calls me and this one is out of my league.

Any invasion is serious to the victim. I'm only trying to guess the method.
From what you say the invader has so much control over the machine that
I wonder if theres a "remote debug" or "remote desktop" type service running.
If the PC owner is that naive perhaps she's leaving this service that allows
a technician to come on your machine to fix it, running and that may be
what the hacker is using. But as I said, I sort of purposely don't learn
a lot about things like PC invasion or encryption because I don't want to
know. So I'm not very much help I'm afraid.

If you consider $130 for an OS reinstall a good price I don't. Also if you don't have the computer recovery disks that is another expense that is to added the price of $130. Recovery disks price's range from about $35 on up. The computer will not be reloaded by the Geek Squad until you have the disks. Now lets look at the virus removal prices, $199 for just removal and with software $299. Half of the people have no clue that are installing the software there, the scheduling is almost never done right. So in the end the computer gets reinfected and you will have to pay again, there is only a 30 day warranty. Just let me say that I have inside knowledge and the situation there.

50$ seems like a more reasonable charge, it would be quite easy for a tech to do
5 to 10 a day from 2 or 3 stations and still do other work

They also have a program called Johnny Utah,(which is mandatory) were over sea's techs do the work. But ending up killing the OS, with constant BSD on boot up and the OS has to be reinstalled, of course at a price of $129. I have seen this many times, and lose of data also.

Geek squad here in out area is a JOKE. I have had many friends turn to them for very simple stuff to get billed over $200.00 or more for nothing. For things I could fix if that tells you somthing. LOL

In our area they charge a $150.00 an hour with a min. of 1 hour no matter what the issue.

So far she is able to get back on her system and she is working around the clock to back up all of her work. Once that is done I think we may be blowing her hard drive and re-installing windows all over again.

Are there any programs that any one knows of to keep such a hacker from doing this again?

what is her internet setup? modem/router, etc?

like I said earlier if she executed a trojan, she invited the hacker in and made them welcome

There is a thread that is posted here, that I saw with a link to a free firewall program. If you follow link to the comparison list, there is another free firewall program that is the top 4 that is just above the other one that was posted in the link. I know Chewy will know where it is. This will help also if they must have IM, do not allow anyone you don't know on your buddy list period. Better yet just deleate IM. I have it but I do not have a profile and do not give out the screen name.

then run online scans from:
Bit-Defender
Panda
Trend Micro

then install the Trial of Kaspersky AV and run that if u cant afford it then get Grisoft's AVG AV program for free

If u want to buy somethign get Kaspersky's Internet Security 7.0

another program you should try is RoboForm it will allow you to enter in your info and it will encrypt it and password protect it and alert you anytime you enter it somewhere

I cant live without this program anymore
