What is a good way to test SATA Hard Drive?

I believe I may have unfairly faulted Linux a few days ago with my post... time will tell...

I have been trying different distros on the same SATA drive, on the same partition, & I am getting crashes all over the place that the Linux guys on the forums can't understand - at least they don't think it is all OS related.

So that brings me to hardware issues. I have Win XP on another PATA drive, & I am going to run that for a few days nonstop to see if I have any trouble, maybe that will point to a bad SATA drive.

This shouldn't be any kind of heat issue, as the pc is kept cool & clean. All the components are around a year old, except the XP drive, that one is probably around 3-4 yrs. old.

Is there any kind of test I can run on the SATA HD, to verify the integrity of it?

goto seagate and get one of their utilities to check the status of drives.
if that comes fine, then try installing xp on this same sata, and see what happens if install goes fine and ur pc shutdowns clean and restarts fine and u dont get any problems, then i guess drive is fine.
Seems like as soon you buy somehing, v. 2 comes out 1.5 times as fast!..!

yes, and it works, i remember one option will show u and fix bad sectors by replacing them by zero's. but if they comeback time to change the drive

I ran both the short & long drive self tests, they both came back passed. I will continue to run the rest of the tests. I see there is also a DOS vers. of the test that will repair bad sectors.

          Will keep you all posted.

any good drive test will be run from dos or a clone

there's still the possibility the motherboard/bios and cable or power supply is the culprit tho

I will run the DOS test next, & swap cables/motherboard slots if nothing shows up.

Ran all DOS tests - short & long mode. Everything passes. Guess it is time to start swapping out cables & Sata positions to see if I can track it down. Will the HD work properly/ boot okay if I plug into S2 on the mainboard?

Seems like it would, but you never know with these things...

EDIT - I wanted to mention; The Sata drive that I have Linux installed is running around 100 degrees F. The other Sata drive, used for storage is running right around 85 - 90 F.

Oh Oh... More problems. I have been browsing the web using win xp, it is on a separate PATA drive. I thought things were okay, & what do you know, the screen went black, and the pc rebooted. I'm not really sure where to start with the diagnosis.

For me, the Power Supply & Mainboard come to mind; not really sure how/where to check either one, especially with an intermittent problem like this. I do have load testers for the PS, those big ceramic resistor things. I suppose I can start with that, although being intermittent, how much is that really gonna tell me?

It's not like the pc was under any serious load, just web surfing. It was powered up for about 8 hrs. straight before the reboot.

Unfortunately, I do not have another PS to throw in here for the test.

EDIT - Everest Sensor Report - Isn't that 12 V supposed to higher? I thought I remember seeing that up around 12.93 V in the past? Don't know if that is enough to matter.

Core Temp is a compact, no fuss, small footprint, yet powerful program to monitor processor temperature and other vital information.

HWMonitor for Windows® x86/x64 is a hardware monitoring program that reads PC systems main health sensors : voltages, temperatures, powers, currents, fans speed, utilizations, clock speeds ... The program handles : CPU and GPU-level hardware monitoring LPCIO chips with monitoring features (ITE® IT87 series, Winbond® and Nuvoton® ICs) memory modules with thermal sensors SSD / hard disks via S.M.A.R.T. batteries and more ...

how many drives and fans are you pushing?

                          2 PATA HD
                          2 SATA HD

                          Intake & Exhaust Fan

Right now I only have 1 SATA drive connected. To use those pgms. I will have to boot over into windows, & I hate to risk a crash & then have to reinstall XP.

Oh well, life is full of risks!

Chewy - Just a thought: My cpu fan is blowing air down into the heatsink. Which way do you recommend? To blow air onto it or pull air thru the fins & off of it?

I see opinions/arguments for both directions all over the 'net.
