Started playing around w/Thunderbird. Way more complicated than outlook express. Outlook has simpler interface. Is it really faster? I didn't see any real change? Address/contacts separate from other folders. Replying was also muddled up w/all this crap. Configuring is the ticket to this or what? If not I think it's hyped.

I'm ptfo. Frustrated reading the damn tutorials and faq's just to get freaking e-mail...

For me, T-Bird seems easy to configure. At present, I have 4 separate accts. setup, 2 from my ISP (Comcast) & 2 from gmail. Each account has individual inboxes to keep all messages going to their respective folders. As with any pgm., there is some configuring to do, but I would say that it is minimal. Maybe it seems like a chore to setup since you are already familiar with O.E.

T-Bird is a favorite among many users because of its' security over M$oft pgms. O.E is a target for hackers/viruses/etc., because it is pre-installed on all windoze machines, & the majority of users just stay with it. At this point, I wouldn't use anything else. The configuration is a piece of cake, I even have spam filters applied to keep that garbage practically non-existent.

But as they say, "whatever works for you".

Hi Katz. Getting the hang of it. Slowly. Think tutorial is lil outdated unless there's another updated 1 on latest thunderbird?

Are you following these tutorials? I've been using it so long, I don't remember which I followed. I have spent quite a bit of time at the Mozilla forums though. Great bunch of guys on there.

You might also want to check out youtube for some instruction. There are tons of instructional vids on there to teach you how to do just about anything!

Type in thunderbird tutorial or something like that & see what videos pop up. Once you get it all set up, I am sure you will be very satisfied with it. Again, my thing is with the security end of it; I like the fact that it isn't directly coupled w/ windows.

Since I run linux as well as windows, I have it set up on both. Nice thing w/ linux, it makes for a super secure combo, since no firewall/antivirus/malware programs are required.

There's something to be said about Penguin security!

I'm going to check out that link on the tutorials. Thnx. You don't have to sign up for youtube do you? i went on there this morning via a link from google about thunderbird or something related and couldn't get to watch it. I think the guy wanted you to join his blog or club or something.

Anyone can view youtube, no signup required. Some videos that may have inappropriate content sometimes require you to sign up so you can verify that you are of age. It is free to join. I don't know about the blog thing.

Ok. It was supposedly some guy that explained something about outlook express, thunderbird or something along those lines. I think i disabled no scripts to allow temp permission. No biggie.

If you've used Outlook Express then you know how to use Thunderbird.
Hi Miles. When you suggest backing up your thunderbird mail, profile and installed Addons with MozBackup free program, you're implying that one would have large files that they'd like to save for any future purposes correct? I mean I just use my mail for forums, friends and any online purchases which send you a confirmation e-mail. Other than that I really don't need to back up anything. I know it uses your hd space to file everything, but anything deleted or not saved is completely off your disc correct? Read up on all that profile and configuration settings stuff on Thunderbird and didn't think I needed all that. Right now anyway.

If you use Firefox and have a lot of AddOns it's a good idea. If you just run Thunderbird as it is out of the box, then you can prolly just copy your email file to save your mail.

MozBackup makes it easy.. so I do it several times a week, instead of once a month

Hi guys. Was recently having a problem connecting to my incoming server at verizon.net. Pop up said couldn't connect authentication required please enter password. I haven't messed w/anything and verizon won't support Thunderbird. However I ran a ping test in the cmd prompt and it's working. Something told me to go to windows firewall and check to see if it was allowed as an exception. It wasn't so I clicked on it and allowed it. Is this a good idea? I never checked before and Thunderbird was running fine. It connected now, but I'm concerned if there might be a risk involved. Thnx.

As a rule of mine I never use anything like Outlook Express, Outlok or Windows Mail because if an infected e-mail arrives the virus can still get into the PC even when the e-mail hasn't been opened. Fare enough, never open an attachment from anyone you don't know. I remember joining a Newsgroup through Outlook Express a few years ago and I got bombarded with virus-infected e-mails from all kinds or morons. These came to me by the hour and all I got was virus alerts appearing but not the virus alerts when you stumble on a virus-infected web site, I got a virus alert each time where I got the window as if I was scanning for viruses and the Anti-Virus failed to block the viruses. I changed my Anti-Virus and the same happened in the same manner. I left the Newsgroups because of morons collecting other people's e-mail addresses (that they don't know, people that they don't know) and they branched out viruses like that.

I also got the odd e-mails from people I know that were infected where they didn't know about the infections that they copied and pasted and strangers sent the odd few e-mails that opened by accident when I tried to delete them. I once-clicked on them as in select to delete and the e-mails opened and up came the virus alert. I scraped Outlook Express as my e-mail client and decided to use Yahoo through the Internet Explorer. I use Google now because Yahoo is always slow. However, at least through any Explorer or Brower you can place a tick next to any risky-looking e-mail and delete it from any folder without it opening and the infection stays to itself. Those other e-mail clients are bringing in more trouble.

Well I do have Google also w/Google Talk, but I needed a client so I could access my verizon account which definitely is slower. I belong not only here, but to other forums and when I'm working on some project or w/e the quick notification through the e-mail client is a great asset. I don't know. maybe having it on your pc instead of it being on the web might be more of a risk or pita. i guess I could always configure google to snatch my verizon mail.

Thnx for that newsgroup experience. I was ready to join some to stay connected w/some interests of mine. Guess it's safer to just go directly and read the damn thing.

I use a combination of outlook express and Yahoo for email. Yahoo is great for fake e-mail address.

Yahoo using full headers for sending a nasty letter back to the spam's internet service provider saying something like this:

                                INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER
YOU SHOULD BE TAKING LEGAL ACTION AGAINST YOUR CLIENT FOR SENDING SPAM/VIRUS OVER THE INTERNET.

                                THANK YOU

Feeback from the spam's internet service provider is great, and results usually happen, thus a big downsize of spam email.

Also, using antispam software program also helps.
