why an external at all?

Probably more out of laziness to not have to open up the case and take it out as to not have it susceptible to a virus if I catch one. Unless, most viruses if any usually attack the operating system and w/e's on that hd. I 'm pretty safe anyway as I just frequent safe forums and online stores. Never know though. So basically that's really why. Any suggestions welcomed as always.
In a way just like the 250gb hd in by itself w/windows home in 50gb and the rest for w/e. Less heat in case and better overall performance, not to say that my build suffered when I had both hd's in. It handled them well.SAMSUNG SH-S203B, SAMSUNG SH-S223F,

If you got the room in your case, plus power and cooling, why not put in a 1T internal in it? It will be a good chance to go in there to clean and dust.
As long as your going to use this drive as storage only with no OS on it your safe from catching a virus on it.
On my rig nothing but the OS and DVDRebuilder's work folder is on C-Drive. Anything I want to keep goes on a separate HD.Comment

I use my external for imaging the primary system drive. That way I don't have to worry about being hit with a virus. The wife does not want to have to reload WOW and download the patches. Very time consuming.Star Baby Girl, Born March,1997 Died June 30th 2007 6:35 PM.Comment

I'm closer to making a decision. Great for all the options. I asked about this before and now will ask again. Do you just keep your os and DVDRebuilder's work folder on your C-Drive? Or are your other programs in your C-drive under program files folder? Many thought this was the better way to have their apps. and programs instead of on a separate partition on same hard drive? Guess accessing them would be better as they're on same hd on same partition. Just curious about this.
@ doc I better take it bit by bit cause if I start thinking about imaging my hd that'll be another program to learn. Now it comes down to another internal hd, or a external hd, or a case for a internal that I could put in should I want to.SAMSUNG SH-S203B, SAMSUNG SH-S223F,

@dr ml422, sorry my mistake I have all my programs on C-Drive in the programs folder. I don't have separate partitions just one large one. However I do have DvdProfiler and Itunes music folders on a storage drive. Just in case C-drive goes to pot I won't have to reenter everything, that could take days. All the other programs I have the set-up files on another drive also, so its no big deal for me just to reinstall them.
One thing you might want to consider is since the external in not for laptop and you do decide to go with an internal for your desktop. You will have less clutter on your desk and I do believe the transfer rate is faster with an internal, though I'm not curtain.Last edited by ipaulo; 15 Dec 2008, 05:08 PM.Comment

Thnx to you guys for the suggestions and experience. I got the 1tb by wd that you posted ipaulo. Not bad price and good reviews. also internal. newegg had another at about $30 bucks more but doc made a good point that the xtra $30 wasn't worth the 30mb cache. made sense to me especially as I'm looking for it for storage and availability if I need to access a video file or anything else.
Solid states look great but very expensive as of now and limited storage as far as I know. Soon though that'll be the new toy.

I started using the free version and it seems pretty good. One frustration though, is if I have IMDB page for the title I'm adding to the database, there seems to be no way to just paste in the URL and let it pull down the information. Seems like that would be an obvious feature. Am I just missing it?Here a link to DvdProfiler.

Hi Miles, I don't know if that's possible or not. What I do is hit the refresh update button every so often. Often times someone will update the graphics and data info, especially on new releases. If you can afford it I suggest you get the paid version the pictures are way clearer and the amount of entries is unlimited.Comment

hey ipaulo. I did find another simpler database program on 46 best XP downloads. It's a freeware called Personal Video Database. It's probably more suited to my needs. Lighter on resources and simpler functions. afaik it doesn't do the insert disc and recognize the data or have the feature to put in the bar code number but it does read off IMDB. In fact once I messed with it for awhile I found if you were having trouble getting it to go to the correct movie, as happens with a lot of foreign films with English titles, you can just create an entry, enter the title, then paste in the url from the IMDB page that you want to select, and it will pull down the info. As with a lot of freeware, the online help sucks!! It took me a while to figure out how to get ID numbers to match with the Case Hanger Number etc.. but once I got the hang of it it is pretty simple, if not as fast as Profiler.
edit: btw those "hanger" puns were strictly unintentional. Even I wouldn't stoop that low for a play on words.

You guys have a formula, simple preferred, to where you 1st process your files, whether video, audio, etc... before finally storing them in the hd of your choice? Do you process them in the hd where your program files are ,or another partition, and then copy and paste them, or cut and paste, or drag and drop them into the final storage destination hd? I found processing them in my primary program file partition and then putting the output folder to the remaining 200gb partition is ok, but that's not where I want to finally store them. So I had to transfer some video files to my 500gb hard drive which took a bit. Any workable formulas you guys use would be of great help.
Funny, 1st I need additional hd for storage, and now I'm trying to figure out how, and what to use all the extra hd space that's going to be left connected to my primary os via a partition. Hmmmmmmmm I couldn't resist. For less than a buck more Supermedia is selling the 720 disc Case. I ordered it. Guess I'll have to keep that one on the bottom of the pile.
@dr_ml422 I don't feel qualified to answer your question. If I play audio off my external hd it's because I haven't gotten around to moving the files off.

@Miles, that's the size case I have, got two of them. Watch how heavy it gets when it's full.
@dr, Well the way I do it is the programs is in C Drive. The rip goes to H Drive and the final files go to I Drive. If I'm using DvdRebuilder, Rip from H Drive to rebuilder in C Drive along with it's work folder, then finished files to I Drive. It was said by doing it from drive to drive that the process is faster, because of less bottlenecking.Comment
