Isn't suggested to keep ram at a even number and same manufacturer? Or just same manufacturer? Might as well throw a extra 2 and get it over with. Prolly get a better deal anyway on 2 sticks.

I am still having problems getting my AntiVirus to complete it's scan. It gets stuck at 86%. I honestly shouldn't have that many files as I left everything on my external HD.
@ dr_ml422 ... I'm looking into getting 2 more sticks. I know it won't see all of it, but I think my PC is one of the ones were everything has to be equal on each side. Also, it would drive me insane if it were lopsided ...Comment

I thought I read that here somewhere about having it even, and better if from same manufacturer also.
By not seeing all of it, you mean you won't be using that much ram, or your system is faulty that way?
@ Chewy Why all the security? Is vista that vulnerable, or is it because of the graphics work Kabu does and being online a while? I've followed your plan of attack w/no problems. Been months now like that.SAMSUNG SH-S203B, SAMSUNG SH-S223F,

Still the fact that it does the fractal now but not the virus scan seems funky.
An alternative to resident anti-virus is Sandboxie. You can set the service to Manual and turn it on and off as needed. Starting the control program starts the service. Then you can run any program Sandboxed by right clicking in Explorer. The brilliance of this approach is that hard disk writes are redirected inside a folder designated as the Sandbox folder. Also Registry and Browser settings and bookmarks are controlled. Very nice program. It's a shame there's no 64 bit support due to security changes by MS. Might as well check it out now before 64 bit is the norm.Comment

Well let me post this, but not a hijack attempt. Just to show I've been clean for a while w/just avira, spybot, and windows firewall. Of course safe hexing too.

@ Miles what you mean by starting the control program starts the service? Are all programs sandboxed by default even though you haven't started to use it by that right click in explorer? Or do you manually sandbox them by right clicking? You turned me on to this a while back and I was interested. Everything in it's time. It's good in that it puts anything found or w/e in that folder and it never touches your system. You did warn about sometimes Sandboxie not being compatible and maybe causing issues. This very unlikely though correct? I have Windows XP home. Thnx.SAMSUNG SH-S203B, SAMSUNG SH-S223F,

I never found the virus. I ran a HiJackThis and came up with nothing as well. If I have one, I cannot find it.
Thank you everyone for helping me out!
As to rendering, it really does eat up my RAM. One complex fractal will max both Cores. If they are simple, I can render two at a time and it will take less than an hour. This one is complex and took 5 hours with nothing else open ...Attached FilesComment

@dr_ml422 if you install Sandboxie the default is to set the service at Automatic, started.
I don't like to have it running if I'm not using it so I set it to Manual Stopped. There's a Control Program in the Sandboxie folder. When you run the Control program if the service is not already running, it starts it. Then you can right click on a program to run it sandboxed. You can also have it install Quick Launch icons to run the default browser sandboxed.
I'm not running the latest version so check http://www.sandboxie.com for the latest developments. There's also a forum for help with configuration and any problems.Comment

lovely fractal, kabu!
i'm using the freeware version COMODO INTERNET SECURITY with a decent firewall & antivirus
used to use ANTIVIR for quite some time until their updating server took ages and weren't working properly any longer
then came AVG but updating it to i think it was version 8 was a fatal mistake: it reported a supposed virus in one of my mailfolders and i actually lost ALL mails irreversebly - no more AVG for me
with comodo i'm more than happy nowComment

@ UncasMS ... thank you!
I will be looking for one program to take care of everything. Is your Comodo going to be able to do that? I have used it before as a firewall and really liked it.
@Chewy ... I have to take the old ladies shopping today. My duty to keep the crazy old birds off the roads and keep it safe for the rest of the city. I will run HJT when I get home. There really shouldn't be that many processes and I don't know which ones are which.Comment

lasttime i start using vista was RC build when i say bye bye to xp... this time im seriously thinking beta 1 of windows 7..... installed on seperate harddrive so i havnt left vista just yet....
EDIT: when u use 3 gb ram ur 2 gb's work in dual channel and 1 gb in single almost all new systems work like this....Attached FilesSeems like as soon you buy somehing, v. 2 comes out 1.5 times as fast!..!Comment

the memory usage in your screenshot says 846mb used
WHAT FOR?
i'm not familiar with the taskbar so my question is: are those tools depicted on the left hand side actually running or is it just some sort of a quick access icon?
it really amazes me to see 846mb taken when i see hardly any tool apart from taskman and some msn stuff or am i mistaken?Comment

no not every thing was running its kinda dual mode taskbar when u run something it shows there as well.. i have 4 gb installed 3.3 gb in use 32bit, installed on 512 mb machine and 60 % was in use after avast and system was very smooth, so i assume unlike vista it uses more wen system has more ram.
