    No Notepad listed for ACCESSORIES

    Recently on the computer at my work site the option to go into notepad by going Start/all programs/Accessories/Notepad does not work now. There is no listing for notepad at all. How do I change this and make Notepad available again.

    Usually while doing any download from anywhere I use Notepad and copy the information of the downloaded item, put a time stamp on it and the website url information.

    I would appreciate your help knowing how to get the Notepad function back. Word pad is available but I haven't used that at all.

    Thanks snagel

    depending on wether this application is still available to you or not one easy way could be this:

    - press "windows key" (next to strg) + "R"
    - type in "notepad"
    - hit enter

      Yeah, I can get it that way but it does not list it in the start up menu, or in the Start/All Programs/Accessories/ does not show an option for NotePad here

      any thoughts

        navigate to the folder, where notepad is located

        usually this will be:
        c:\windows\notepad.exe

        now drag and drop this executable to the place where you want it to be - i.e. drag notepad.exe towards the START button (keep left mouse button pressed!), move over "all programs" and then towards "accessories" and drop it there

        by doing so you should have created a shortcut in accessories to notepad

          Thank you very much Uncas that worked. It took me a couple of attempts but it finally worked. I actually had the IT specialist at work trying to make this work before today and he was totally unable to make it work. Thank you snagel

            So where would I find the search.exe I can't seem to find it. The one that is usually down by Help support and Run in the lower right corner of the Start menu. ? What would I have to do to put a shortcut to search, after deleting programs I usually like to run the search function to clear out any remnants of the program.

              @snagel I noticed the methodology you used on your downloads. Don't know if this would appeal to you but I made a gizmo to create a TreePad file for any folder but with a download folder in mind. Instead of having just a text file, or a text file for each download, you would have a tree with the filenames on the left and whatever comments you wanted to paste in on the right.

              Anyway, it can be used with TreePad Lite, which is free, and the utility itself is free. In case you care to try it:

                => RIGHTclick on START

                => properties

                => go to TAB "start menu" or whatever this is called in your windows version

                => on this TAB in the middle select "start menu" again and then "configure" or "properties" button next to it

                => in this new window go to the second tab (no idea what it is called - something like "advanced"?) NOT the tab "general"

                inside this tab you should find the "search" function

                  An alternative search for NTFS partitions is Everything Search.

                  It's free. It doesn't rely on indexing. The file system journaling mechanism is used to let it know of changes in the file system. IOW, it gets notified with almost zero overhead when files change. Very cool.

                    Thanks MilesAhead. I just read your thread today. I just need to find where it put it and then decide how to use it.

                        Hey snagel. My program just generates a TreePad file with blank entries for every file in the download folder(or whatever folder you run it in.) Once you have the TreePad file you can update it manually or you can use my program to update it.

                        You can select new entries in your download folder and if a TreePad file has already been made for that folder it will append them. So typically what you would do to add entires is use Details view in Explorer then sort by date, then select the new entries. It's just a utility to make using TreePad easier.

                        I also have a similar idea that's called TipOff. It's a shell extension for 32 bit Windows. After you add a comment to a file using the property page for that file, when you hover the mouse it shows the comment in a ToolTip. It also puts a button on the Property Page to generate a TreePad file. Another way to skin the same cat.
