    Problem With Anti-Virus

I have an old PC and I need to format the hard drive. The reason why is because the internet isn't working through it. I tried so many things before and now it's either a software fault or a hardware fault. Before I send my PC off for repairs I want to format the hard drive to see if the internet works through it again and if it does then it will rule out there was a software fault and it's fixed. The other problem is, the built-in software that formats the PC is corrupted. When I start the formatting off, things start as normal and then I get a blue screen with white writing without a word in English (that is stupid) apart for the word "virus" mentioned. I wonder if there's a virus or viruses causing this corruption. I want to install an Anti-Virus software in and scan my old PC but so far I'm getting nowhere because I need to download updates in my new PC, burn the updates to a CD with an Anti-Virus and install the lot to my old PC and run the scan. So far, I tried one Anti-Virus but I can't download any updates seperate to burn to CD and when I tried AVG, it needs me to connect to the internet before continuing the installation.

Can anyone think of an Anti-Virus where I can install it without the internet and where I can update it from a CD?

    Many thanks.

maybe Ultimate Boot CD can help.

download and burn it and start your pc from that cd.

you will find many usefull tools in the collection - be it harddrive wiping or antivirus

    another approach could be this:

download and burn those so called live-cds of linux versions like Ubuntu

with these life-cds you can start your machine (if the hardware is still functional) from the cd/dvd into a linux envorinment like Ubuntu (without any kind of installation of course), which will not only provide you with internet browsers such as firefox or others so you could test your internet connect from within this Ubuntu environment but it also should bring some antivirus as well.

I'm not sure how old this list is, but if you are running XP there are probably some you can use:

Bootable Antivirus Rescue CD is a bootable antivirus media source perform scans and removes computer virus without booting computer operating system first.
