When you install the program it asks if you want it enabled!
You clicked 'Yes'.
Once the programs loads (with it turned on), of course it's going to check for updates. It doesn't matter that you then disable it, it's already running!
Why not make life easier for yourself and just let it out of the firewall, then it wont hang.
