IMG Burn & Semaphore Timeout

I bought my computer in 2003....

Ok to format my media do I have to put them in the dvd burner or in my Internal Dvd player and will I have to do each disc? Also the 1st time i tried to burn I was using Dvd+R media so if i change media type i have to format everytime???

If it's that old, you have have USB 1x, in which case, give up. Pop the burner on an internal IDE channel and your problems will vanish.

The semaphore timeout problem is all too common with external drives.

Nobody (and by that I mean all the burning software companies!) ever found a proper way around it.

It's just some bug in the system between the OS and the enclosure / drive / usb drivers.

It's basically where the timeout (set within the program to something like 5000 seconds) is being totally ignored and the system is making up its own.

If something takes too long to complete, the command will timeout - because the system thinks it has hung - when really it hasn't.

You could try a different enclosure for the drive... update the drives firmware... update the enclosures firmware etc.

You could also switch to using firewire (if poss) and see if that helps.

Failing that (unless you're running a laptop), stick the drive IN the case as an internal drive. It'll work perfectly then.

in device manager look for enhanced controller

that's usb2

Oh and to see if you have usb 2, open device manager and expand the usb branch.

If you have an 'enhanced' entry, you have usb 2.

See if you can put the drive on an IDE channel in the PC itself. Otherwise, you'll be in for a very frustrating time Tizz.
