Can't do Dual layer with Image Burn but can with Nero

I'm using Verbatim DVD+R DL media on a Pioneer dvr-109 burner. Everything is up to date.
I guess this is the right thread, because I get the same message as the first one posted, except it is a different VTS file:
"Optimal L1 Data Zone Start LBA: None Found! (VTS_07)
This image has not been mastered correctly for burning onto a double layer (OTP Track Path) disc.
None of the cells meet the "DVD-Video specification' crteria for a potential layer break position.
"Do you want to continue anyway?"
I reached this impass in the following way:
I ripped with Ripit4me. Then I opened VOB Blanker, blanked unwanted items
and processed everything. Then I opened DVD Shrink with the settings set at: create Iso with Image Burn and burn with DVD Decrypter. I inserted my Verbatim disk into my Lite-on burner. After the encoding was finished, I got the above message. The complete log is appended below.
So I closed and reopened DVD Shrink and started over. When it finished
encoding and presented the processing selection grab screen I chose: output
to disk drive and burn with Nero. Nero burned the disk and it plays perfectly
without a visible layer break.
This has happened a half dozen times with the same results each time.
I would prefer using Image Burn because it can be better customized and gives the user more control of the process. Also, in terms of forum support, I would feel better using programs that are developed and supported by the user community. I have always liked DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink and I am
anxious to benefit from using their offspring, Image Burn.
I also have one basic question: what is the point of converting a VIDEO_TS file to an ISO file?
Any answers will be appreciated.
Thanks much,

Does this file exist?
I ripped with Ripit4me. Then I opened VOB Blanker, blanked unwanted items
and processed everything. Then I opened DVD Shrink with the settings set at: create Iso with Image Burn and burn with DVD Decrypter. I inserted my Verbatim disk into my Lite-on burner. After the encoding was finished, I got the above message. The complete log is appended below.
And why is DVD Shrink involved? It will not make a compliant dual layer ISO.
1. I edited the address to avoid adding confusion but left off the back-slash thereby creating confusion! I happen to store my ISO's inside DVD Rebuilder. Now wouldn't that just raise questions if I left that storage address in! Instead I am forced to explain it here anyway.
2. After using VOB I like to open DVD Shrink and look at the results and see the size of various files and decide whether I am satisfied. Apparently I have erroneously then proceeded to encode with DVD Shrink as stated above and when finished have tried to direct it to create an ISO and burn with DVD Decrypter. Nero will do it but not DVD Decrypter because it won't set a layer break.
3. The last three times I used ImgBurn in Build mode the layer break selected (optimal I thought) resulted in a L0 burn only (or rather, I can't access L1 [the second layer]). I burned, I verified, I was conquered. I guess I haven't found the Image Burn forum guides as helpful to me as I might wish. (I didn't ask the questions that are being answered.)
My questions then:
1. The first one is answered if it is true that DVD Shrink will not handle a dual layer layer break even though one might mistakenly assume it might since it will create ISO files. Am I on the same page now?
2. What is the point of converting VIDEO_VTS files to an ISO file (other than to use Image Burn that only burns ISO files)? There has to be a very practical reason or three, yes?
3. And I will add to that my problem with layer breaks stated in para. 3 above. When I select a layer break it always seems to be wrong. I am not color blind (as far as I know!) and I think I understand the difference between best, better and OK layer breaks. I still get coasters.

I only write to those MKM-001s at 2.4x. Never a coaster. Do you verify your burns?
1. Yup - don't use DVD Shrink for DL DVDs. It is DVD Shrink after all.
2. See links posted by soup.
3. Try slowing the burn. Build first to ISO then switch to write mode. When everything is stabilised, burn to device. Check DMA.

1. Interesting. Nero burns them at 2.4X. I wondered why. I have been burning at 4X and thought I was perfectly safe. And yes, I trust, but verify!
2. Yes. I have been through those picture guides that Soup kindly listed. I guess I skimmed them too lightly, especially the fourth guide which talks about chosing among the possible layer breaks. It still confuses me. I will have to think about it some more. I don't want to spend too much time configuring for a burn if I don't have to.
3. I will slow it down. My DMA should be good. I uninstalled the drivers and rebooted/reinstalled to make sure they were actually in Ultra mode.

What is the point of converting a VIDEO_TS file to an ISO?
The ISO is there on your HD and can be written in write mode. I just think you should get yourself an ISO that works first and then burn it. Afterwards go direct to device. But in essence, there is no difference.

Thanks for indulging my uncertainties.
I'm not sure I follow you on the quote above .
1. This is what I have done: I saved the ISO to the harddrive instead of burning immediately. Then I turned on Daeman and mounted the ISO to a virtual drive so my WinDVD or Windows Media Player could play it. It looks good on the monitor.
To try an alternative, I also opened DVD Shrink and from the File menu selected "Open Disk Image" and that also allowed me to watch the movie. (By the way, does everyone know that if you double click on the little picture screen, it enlarges to fill the whole monitor? I just found that out! ) It looks good here too.
Is this what is meant by "you should get yourself an ISO that works first"?
2. "Afterwards go direct to device." I can't fathom this instruction! What is there to do after one has gotten oneself "an ISO that works first and then burn it." I may be missing the obvious here?
Well, what I meant was ImgBurn can build/burn in 2 modes:
1. Build an ISO (to hard drive), switch to write mode, select ISO and burn
2. Build and NOT make an ISO but write directly to device (ie the DVD drive).
These should be, and are, equivalent. But, I would like to see if using method 1, you can make a nice compliant ISO and then burn it and make it play.
If so, then we can proceed to method 2 (which most people use, I would suspect).
1. Yup - don't use DVD Shrink for DL DVDs. It is DVD Shrink after all.
I'm afraid I mislead you because I had forgotten what I had done with DVD Shrink. I put a copy of ImgBurn.exe into the DVD Decrypter folder and renamed it DVD Decrypter.exe. (DVD Decrypter is renamed DVD DecrypterReal.exe.-just so I have it for when I need it.) So when I open DVD Shrink it does in fact make an ISO and then open ImgBurn even though it is following a menu choice that says: make an ISO and burn with DVD Decrypter! I picked up that shortcut from the ImgBurn site. Sorry 'bout that. It was with this procedure that I ended up with dual layer coasters.
That DVD DecrypterReal etc is not necessary. There's a sticky which provides a link to a version of DVD Shrink that calls ImgBurn. Try the DVD Shrink forum.
Shrink is good for making files "ready" for adjustment by ImgBurn. Here's what I've done (for example):
I use Verbatim DVD+R DL discs to make "double feature" discs, movie only. I've gone as far as 3 movies (93 mins each, approx) on a single DL with NO problems at all... I remember, as a kid, having movies on tapes like this and sought to "reproduce" old times with dvds. It also makes great discs to have on in the background for those of us that like something to fall asleep to... 2 or 3 films, then stops completely with no menu perpetually repeating.
Here's what works every time and gives exceptional quality:
1) Rip disc (or discs) with RipIt4Me in file mode.
2) Open Shrink. Use Reauthor mode to create one, two, or three feature disc. Have Shrink export to folder. (For those who own DVD-RB see step 2a, if not see step 2b.)
2a) Make sure Shrink exports project to folder with NO COMPRESSION. Ignore all warnings about project being too large. When finished, open new folder in PGCEdit to take advantage of the programs ability to clean up DVD Shrink bugs. Save disc with 32K padding enabled. Use DVD-RB to create a DVD9 project folder from your newly created source, and then open that finished product in ImgBurn. Use ImgBurn's build mode to create a DL with a perfect layer break. ImgBurn will suggest where, just pick from available choices. I even pick seamless, works beautifully every time.
2b) Set Shrink to compress for DVD-9 and export to folder. When finished, open new folder in PGCEdit to take advantage of the programs ability to clean up DVD Shrink bugs. Save disc with 32K padding enabled. Open that finished product in ImgBurn. Use ImgBurn's build mode to create a DL with a perfect layer break.
A lot of steps, I admit. However I have found this method (as complicated as it is) yields outstanding DL disc results with no coasters. I use DVD-RB with Cinemacraft Encoders. I'm currently enjoying a "Kung-Fu triple feature" created from 3 different movie discs (which I own anyway).
I must also add this... I find this method even works with Verbatim DVD-R DLs. I know the -R DL format is kind of reviled around here, but it worked just as well and on many standalone players.
I use Pioneer DVD burners. I also use Pioneer, Sony and Magnavox standalones.
1. You would be one of the lucky ones with -R DLs. They are designed very badly.
2. Seamless might work beautifully every time, but it is not on spec and users should experiment once to see if it plays on all their players. After that, it is indeed terrific not to have that annoying pause in the movie.
