Thanks chewy, I'll chew over your suggestions and see what I can do to make my system more efficient.

In the meantime, I did everything else recommended above except changing media (Sony are grouped with Verbatim, TY etc in one of the links on media quality, and sometimes outsource to TY, and anyway I bought a 50 stack of them.)

So, I set my IDE channels to DMA Mode 5.
    Upgraded Rip4Me to version 15.
Flashed my firmware to the latest version.
    Changed to IMGburn from Nero.
    Set burn at 4x.
Burned a couple of movies, one I did manually from IMGburn, ie, Build the ISO then write the ISO onto DVD, the second I did automatically from DVDShrink with the patch for 3.2

And they are both fine, i.e., play in anything I put them in and look fine. So, it looks like I've lived happily ever after.

    Except...

    (there's always something)

I set IMGburn to Verify, and got some errors for both of the burns, 28 per sector in fact. It continually prompted me "Do I want to continue verifying this disc?" or words to that effect, and eventually I gave up. I had a hunt around the IMGburn section of the forum to see what it means, without success. I'll have another look tomorrow when I have a bit more time.

But, in my view these burns are fine, i.e., they play and look good, so I don't know how seriously to take these errors. Any thoughts anyone? Here's one of the logs for anyone interested in my rather minor problem.

You got a bad burn. Simple. If it don't verify, it ain't good.

Change the media (you mighta gotta bad batch). Or else the burner's duff.

try some verbatim 16x dvd+R with that burner and then scan not verify, those liteons have issues with dash R media.

        another issue:
        Destination Media Type: DVD-R (Disc ID: SONY16D1) (Speeds: 6x, 8x, 12x, 16x)
        14:16:02 Write Speed: 4x
        try 8x

          "patch for 3.2"

Is there a patch for DVD Shrink? If so what is it for?

This link will take you to a Dvd Shrink that calls up ImgBurn to burn if you set it that way.

Ok, I tried it again (same ISO file) at 8x (with the same Sony media), still won't verify, it gets no more than 2% into the verification before getting the first errors. But it plays fine in any player I put it in, I can see no glitches or dropouts. Here's the pic of the quality scan. Is this good or bad?

So, I managed to find some Verbatim DVD+R 4x media (MCC-002), (it's all that was available locally in the Verbatim line), and burned the same ISO file onto it, obviously at 4x. It wouldn't verify, although it got further into it than with the Sony media (about 4%) before getting the first errors. So I did a scan of that one too, here:-

I tried Verifying with IMGBurn again at lower speeds (1x) but it made no difference.

And while I was at it, I did a few more scans with Nero CD-DVD Speed 4.60 of some other burned media that people have given me over the last couple of years (burned by others on different burners, different media etc, principally old home videos put onto DVD) for comparison with my burns, and NONE of them were better than the two Disc Quality scans I've shown above, and needless to mention everything plays in my stand alone DVD player.

So, what's the verdict? How serious is a Verification failure if everything plays, and scans show nothing seriously wrong? My burner is a month old. Is it a dud? Thanks for any comments. BTW, I've read every thread in the ImgBurn section on Verification.

Do you have AnyDVD running while you verify? Despite the fact that it plays, what you see is not what you wanted.

Nope, I don't have AnyDVD installed on my machine.

So, I take it that any half decent burner should be able to burn the ISO exactly? I.e., it will verify successfully most of the time? I have not had a successful verification yet.

Yikes, I've just noticed something weird. I've just noticed both ImgBurn and Nero CD-DVD Speed are both identifying the Sony media burned by me SINCE upgrading my firmware as having been burned by a SONY DW-G120A with MSOP. (E.g., see the first attachment in my post above). I can't see how this could be a good thing, as it's wrong. They were burned with my LiteOn, I've never had anything to do with a Sony burner.

Incidentally both correctly identify Sony media burned BEFORE I updated the firmware.

                      SONY burners are rebadged LiteOns.

And verifies should be successful ALL the time.

I'd say something's wrong with the burner.

I did that the first time, i.e., flashed it in safe mode (yep) with no appz running and no disc in it. And confirmed that it was the correct firmware for my burner before I hit the OK button.

Having said that, before I send it back to the retailer with a printout of the logs showing the errors and demand a replacement, I'll uninstall all DVD-related software, uninstall the burner, reinstall and reflash and reinstall ImgBurn just to see what happens.

But it looks like something's wrong for sure. I've followed blutach's Golden Rules to the letter now, and changed every variable other than the burner, and still haven't had even one Verifiable burn.

Oh, and before I do that I'll try a CD data-burn just to see what happens, more for curiosity than any other reason. I could do with another coaster.

                          Thanks for the comments, folks.

please post a screen shot of nero info tool configuration

what drivers are you running on the ide controller?

and check a trt with a non verifiable disk in another drive, a problem with verification in imgburn does not
                            necessarily prove anything

IDE controller drivers? I'm hoping you mean this stuff.

                              Primary IDE channel: system32\DRIVERS\atapi.sys
                              and system32\storprop.dll

                              same for Secondary channel:

Not sure what a 'trt' is, but if you mean a scan or something in another drive, I only have one CD/DVD drive on this machine, and a DVD reader (not burner) on my laptop, which I'm not sure is much use. I could try it in a friend's computer (elsewhere) tomorrow, but not sure how I could verify it without taking the ISO on my HDD also.

Edit: OK, I worked out that a trt is a transfer rate test. I may be able to check this tomorrow on someone else's machine.

Take one of your discs that didn't verify & run a Transfer Rate Test with Nero CD/DVD Speed in another drive.
