I'm confused... it's the same disc, literally. I copied a movie on my laptop long ago, and I now put it into my PC which works just fine. ImgBurn on my PC gives a report as follows:

    ------------------------
    DVDRW IDE 16X A091 (ATA)
    Current Profile: DVD-R

    Disc Information:
    Status: Complete
    Erasable: No

    Sectors: 2,286,176
    Size: 4,682,088,448 bytes
    Time: 508:04:26 (MM:SS:FF)
    Supported Write Speeds: 4x, 8x

    Pre-recorded Information:
    Manufacturer ID: OPTODISCR008

    Recording Management Area Information:
    Slimtype SOSW-852S

Last Physical Sector of Data Area: 2,482,783

On my laptop it gives this conflicting report:

    ------------------------
    Slimtype DVDRW SOSW-852S PSX3 (ATA)
    Current Profile: DVD-R

    Disc Information:

    Supported Write Speeds: 2x, 4x

    Pre-recorded Information:
    Manufacturer ID: OPTODISCR008

I don't get how the same exact disc comes up as a different disc on two machines. I'm so confused on this issue, it's ridiculous. After Tuesday I planned already (for unrelated reasons) to reformat my laptop, so I'll post after that saying whether or not everything's okay. Still, if anyone can figure out what the heck happened here, that'd be great.

**EDIT: Holy smokes I'm a FOOL. I realized what Chewy and you all are saying now... I didn't even think about it, but now I realize I'm no longer using the Imation 2x-8x discs, I'm using Imation 2x-16x discs. They subtly changed them without changing the packaging on the spindle. So I'm guessing my laptop's burner is an 8x burner (it's Averatec 3200 series) and there's some problem with these new DVDs that support speeds of up to 16x. Well, thanks everyone!

we've all been there and done that, now you realize it's all about firmware, without new firmware, older drives can't burn newer blanks right

So does that mean I'm just out of luck for those discs? Or is there a way to update the mid code?

Me thinks you are out of luck with those discs...there is no way to update the MID code without rewriting the firmwares strategies which would come from Lite-On or TDB etc.

Good job everyone, I really appreciate everyone's input. As far as my problem, I'll just have to release my sorrows and get different discs.
