Hanging at finalizing DVD+R DL

I read part of that thread and it's a shame to waste such work on an old
marginal dvd burner

those btc/emprexe burners weren't that good, btc finally gave up and quit
making burners

google on that drive gets a lot of hits which usually end something like this
Probably wasted 4 days pursuing problems that were all down to that BTC drive!

I understand my drive is not good. I'm starting the process of looking for a new and better quality burner. In the meantime, are there any suggestions or diagnostics I can try to get this DVD finalized?

@Lightning UK, do you see anything noteworthy in my log? Is it possible to finalize the DVD using another burner in someone else's computer? If so, are there any special precautions I should take and is it necessary to use the same version of ImgBurn?

@Chewy, are the burners in your signature all recommended? Which one is your favorite? I found a pretty good deal on the Pioneer DVD-710. What can you tell me about the Pioneer DVD-710?

Are they not good with single layer burns? Although I do want to finalize this dual layer DVD, I will be burning more single layer DVDs in the future.

free shipping changes often but these are the 2 burners I would reccomend on price and performance,

they are new and there are bugs still being worked on, but that's normal and firmware usually fixes it

both bitsett dvd+r, something regular pioneer and nec's do not

LG makes a good burner also

@Chewy, thanks for those suggestions and links. The Lite-on didn't seem to have as good a rating as the Samsung. The Samsung SH-S182D looks very interesting and with all the positive write-ups and at that price, it's pretty much a no-brainer. But a couple of questions first . . . .

What are your thoughts on LightScribe? The Samsung SH-S182M looks like the same drive, but with LightScribe. It's only a few $ more and I think I'd like that capability. I'm aware of some of the current drawbacks of media price, burn time of the label, and the limitations of the image, but do they (LightScribe burners) burn the data the same as the non-LightScribe? In other words, if I burn non-LightScribe media with a LightScribe burner, will I notice a difference? I guess what I'm considering is that if LightScribe media prices come down in the future, and the technology improves, is it worth a few extra $ to get LightScribe today?

Finally, it appears that the Samsung comes with a black bezel. Do you know if there's a way to pick up a white/beige bezel for it? This is not very important, but thought I would ask.

the models share the same hardware and will burn the same

a lot of people are finding this lightscribe to be inferior to just using printable disks, I agree

the liteon is a little newer, hence more problems/bugs

black is the most popular color so has the best bulk deals

Thanks Chewy. You had to make my decision more difficult by introducing another drive with a white/beige bezel, didn't you?

I was all set to get the Samsung. I'll just have to weigh the extra cost + shipping of the LG against getting a white/beige bezel. Maybe you can help me out by answering the following:

In your opinion, will the LG be just as good a choice as the Samsung from a performance standpoint?

going on past experience, the lg's read slower/better, burn good on almost all media, but can't do any quality scanning, that why I have an lg and a benq paired together.

the samsung is making a name for itself tho and does quality scanning, if I had to choose I would get the samsung to save the money. Special will probably run out today tho.

Thanks Chewy. I ordered the Samsung w/out LightScribe. Can't wait for it to get here. I appreciate all the advice.

I guess I'll keep the BTC/Emprex burner around for backing up data and in a pinch, burning single layer DVDs.

@Chewy, the Samsung came in and I installed it. I put in my GoNY disc and tried to close the track/session/disc with ImgBurn. Closing the track did nothing. It seemed to hang when closing the session and eventually gave me a "Not Responding." After getting ImgBurn to shut down, I opened it back up and tried closing the disc and it gave me an error message. I rebooted the computer to try again and when I put the DVD in the burner, XP asked me if I wanted to play the movie. This was the 1st time that had happened, so I assume it's finalized, but I never got a message that it was finalized, or that ImgBurn was verifying. Nero CD-DVD Speed reports that it's closed. Any concerns here?

Oh, BTW, I could not do a Disc Quality scan on the Samsung. I thought you said that it could.

The Emprex/BTC did Quality scanning w/out Jitter and PO failures, but the results are not good. See the thumbnail screenshot below. Are the poor results because of the subpar burner, or the fact that it didn't close properly? OTOH, the DVD did play in my stand alone players, so I think it's alright, despite the bad quality scan. What other tests should I run on the disc?

The Samsung came with firmware B04, and the Samsung website says that B05 is out and available to download. I plan to update to the latest firmware, but I thought I read somewhere (can't find it now) that it's not advisable to use Samsung's automated firmware update program. Do you know anything about that? If that is the case, what is the recommended method for updating the drive's firmware?

wait on the firmware and avoid dash R media for a while, they are fixing a problem, that's almost always the case with new models

Thanks for the link, Chewy. That did the trick. The Samsung now scans. Will there be a difference between the Samsung scans and the Emprex/BTC scans?

Huh? My limited experience causes me not to understand this statement. Could you please explain in newbie terms.

I've yet to use DVD-R on any burns. I've stayed exclusively with DVD+R.

There is a firmware update out there right now (B05). What is the recommended way of flashing the firmware? I thought I'd seen a post where someone said not to use Samsung's automated service. Is that true?

I would do it manually from safe mode with the drive empty

m and d models of the 182

emprexe/btc's don't belong in the same sentence with your burner
