    Stats:

For the week ending 16th June 2012, here are the stats:

    Percentage of revenue:
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 28.91% vs 71.09%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $46.29 million
DVD sales total spending: $113.84 million

    These stats available from here:

    Home Media Magazine

    Top 10:

The first A-List release for some while with the $180 million box office hit Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows dominating the sales charts for the week ending 16th June 2012.

The next most popular new release on the Blu-ray charts was Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance in 3rd place, but it sold 5 times less than Sherlock Holmes.

Superman vs. the Elite didn't manage to make the combined Blu-ray and DVD top 10, but it did come in at 8th on the Blu-ray only charts, thanks to its excellent performance on the HD format.

The only other new release in the Blu-ray top 10 was Good Deeds, coming in at 9th.

Entourage: The Complete Eighth Season made the combined top 20, but not the Blu-ray top 20.

But thanks mainly to the top 2 new releases, some of last week's releases, and this week's top 5 sellers all doing well on Blu-ray compared to their DVD counterparts, Blu-ray market share was at a high for 2012.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
    1. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
    2. Act of Valor
    3. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance
    4. Safe House
    5. John Carter
    6. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol
    7. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island
    8. Superman vs. the Elite
    9. Good Deeds
    10. Chronicle

    Blu-ray Share:

Out of the new releases, the best performing title, in terms of Blu-ray sales share, was Superman vs the Elite, with 67.53% of all disc sales belonging to Blu-ray (conversely, 32.47% belonged to DVD).

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows also managed to get above the 50% mark, with 53.84%, while Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance was close to achieving the same with 48.98%.

    Good Deeds only managed 21%.

Only Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance was available on 3D out of this week's new releases, achieving a sales share of 13%, meaning that just over 1 in 4 Blu-ray sales resulted in a sale of the Blu-ray 3D copy.

      Stats:

For the week ending 23rd June 2012, here are the stats:

      Percentage of revenue:
      Blu-ray vs DVD: 23.92% vs 76.08%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $27.47 million
DVD sales total spending: $87.39 million

      These stats available from here:

      Home Media Magazine

      Top 10:

A very new release light week this week, even though there were 4 new releases in the top 10, even when combined, they did not get over the $100 million box office mark.

In fact, the top selling release did not surpass last week's number one on the sales charts, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows - Project X only sold half as many copies.

Big Miracle was further back in the Blu-ray sales charts, at 6th.

At the foot of the top 10 table were Wanderlust and Seeking Justice, the latter only managing $411,000 at the US box office, despite the star studded cast of Nicolas Cage, January Jones and Guy Pearce.

As a result, both Blu-ray revenue and market share fell back down to more "normal" levels for 2012, compared to the last two week's highs.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
      1. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
      2. Project X
      3. Act of Valor
      4. John Carter
      5. Safe House
      6. Big Miracle
      7. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance
      8. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island
      9. Wanderlust
      10. Seeking Justice

      Blu-ray Share:

While the new releases weren't what you would call A-listers, their Blu-ray sales share wasn't anything to write home about either. None actually managed to make it into the Blu-ray sales share top 20, with Project X and Wanderlust both getting 37% (meaning 63% of all discs copies sold were on DVD instead). Seeking Justice's Blu-ray sales share was 35%, while Big Miracle managed 31%.

None of the new releases were available on Blu-ray 3D.

        Stats:

For the week ending 30th June 2012, here are the stats:

        Percentage of revenue:
        Blu-ray vs DVD: 25.51% vs 74.49%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $31.25 million
DVD sales total spending: $91.23 million

        These stats available from here:

        Home Media Magazine

        Top 10:

A couple of major, if not A-list, releases, an Oscar winner, and some other releases helped both DVD and Blu-ray revenue to rise compared to the week before, although Blu-ray rose by more.

On the combined DVD and Blu-ray charts, 21 Jump Street and Wrath of the Titans were neck and neck, but '21' got the upper hand. But on the Blu-ray charts, the order was reversed, and it wasn't even that close, with 'Wrath' selling 1.3 times more than '21'. This can be easily explained by each title's Blu-ray sales share, and we'll talk more about that later on.

As for the other releases, Mirror Mirror was third place on both charts, while the Academy Award winning The Artist came 5th on the Blu-ray chart.

Two more new releases were also available, including A Thousand Words and Damages: The Complete Fourth Season. The former didn't make the Blu-ray top 20, and the latter was on DVD only.

21 Jump Street's $100m+ box office figures, plus the performance of Wrath of the Titans on Blu-ray, helped revenue and market share to rise for Blu-ray. Not a yearly high, or even a monthly one, but a solid week nonetheless.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
        1. Wrath of the Titans
        2. 21 Jump Street
        3. Mirror Mirror
        4. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
        5. The Artist
        6. Project X
        7. Act of Valor
        8. Safe House
        9. John Carter
        10. Spider-Man 2

        Blu-ray Share:

For Blu-ray sales share, 21 Jump Street managed "only" 41.45%, meaning 41.45% of all discs sold were on Blu-ray, while 58.55% were on DVD. I say "only" because Wrath of the Titans managed to do a lot better at 54.65%, allowing it to join the (becoming less so) exclusive club of first week releases that have managed to sell more on Blu-ray than on DVD.

Mirror Mirror's 35% wasn't too bad, while The Artist's 38.01% just allowed it to creep into the Blu-ray sales share top 20 chart.

Of the new releases, only Wrath of the Titans was available on Blu-ray 3D. But due to the $5 difference between the 2D and 3D Blu-ray versions during the period covered by this week, which has now increased to $7, the Blu-ray 3D version only managed to get a sales share of 8%, meaning just under 1 in 7 Blu-ray copies sold belonged to the 3D version.

          Stats:

For the week ending 7th July 2012, here are the stats:

          Percentage of revenue:
          Blu-ray vs DVD: 20.78% vs 79.02%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $22.28 million
DVD sales total spending: $84.85 million

          These stats available from here:

          Home Media Magazine

          Top 10:

A week that's practically free of any new releases thanks to the 4th of July holiday, and Blu-ray market share was down to its lowest level since April, and the third lowest recorded result for 2012. Revenue was also at its second lowest in 2012.

The only new release in the combined DVD and Blu-ray top 20 was Mac + Devlin Go to High School, and it debuts at only 17th place.

And so it was up to recent releases like 21 Jump Street and Wrath of the Titans to carry the week, but both actually lost out to the month old Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.

The Nolan Batman movies were back in the top 10 thanks to the build-up to the new Batman movie.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
          1. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
          2. Wrath of the Titans
          3. 21 Jump Street
          4. Mirror Mirror
          5. The Dark Knight
          6. Batman Begins
          7. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island
          8. Project X
          9. Act of Valor
          10. Safe House

          Blu-ray Share:

The two Batman movies led the market share charts, but as there were no new releases, there's not much to talk about here really.

You can see the Blu-ray top 20 market share table here:

            Stats:

For the week ending 14th July 2012, here are the stats:

            Percentage of revenue:
            Blu-ray vs DVD: 20.72% vs 79.28%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $21.67 million
DVD sales total spending: $82.94 million

            These stats available from here:

            Home Media Magazine

            Top 10:

Both revenue and market share remains relatively unchanged for both Blu-ray and DVD, for the week ending 14th July 2012. It was another week very light on new releases, with only a single new release in the Blu-ray top 10.

That new release was American Reunion.

There were two other new releases in the combined Blu-ray and DVD top 20, but neither were available on Blu-ray.

Again, the 'Nolan' Batman movies stayed in the top 10 and actually climbing up the charts thanks to the lack of new releases, while recent hits remained too.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
            1. American Reunion
            2. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
            3. Wrath of the Titans
            4. The Dark Knight
            5. Batman Begins
            6. 21 Jump Street
            7. Mirror Mirror
            8. Act of Valor
            9. Rio
            10. Safe House

            Blu-ray Share:

For a comedy, American Reunion did really well in terms of Blu-ray sales share, getting 46.39% (in other words, Blu-ray and combo copies were responsible for 46.39% of all disc sales, with DVD sales at 53.61%). The single new release wasn't available on 3D Blu-ray.

Unlike this week, the same week last year actually had quite a few new releases, including the hits Rango and The Lincoln Lawyer. So both Blu-ray and DVD revenue dropped compared to the same week last year.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $1.73m (down 7.4%), while DVD sales decreased by $13.62m (down 13.7%) producing an overall loss of $15.35 million in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share rose, from 19.68% to 20.72%.

              Stats:

For the week ending 21st July 2012, here are the stats:

              Percentage of revenue:
              Blu-ray vs DVD: 22.28% vs 77.72%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $23.12 million
DVD sales total spending: $80.67 million

              These stats available from here:

              Home Media Magazine

              Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue and market share both rose compared to the last two weeks, but both remain at a low level compared to the rest of 2012. This is despite 6 new releases in the combined Blu-ray and DVD top 20, but only 3 of them made it into the Blu-ray top 10.

And despite being easily the best seller on DVD, The Three Stooges only managed to finish 3rd on the Blu-ray list, finishing behind Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. And it wasn't even a close third.

Lockout finished 4th, just ahead of Get the Gringo.

The other new release that didn't make the Blu-ray top 10 includes Casa de mi Padre, coming in at 13th, and Friends With Kids, which did not even make the top 20.

Eureka: Season 5 was also new, but it wasn't available on Blu-ray.

So another relatively quiet week for new releases, with all the new releases combining to produce barely over $70 million at the box office, which allowed a 4 year old Blu-ray title to become the best seller for the week (with good reason though, thanks to the new Batman movie at the cinemas).

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
              1. Batman Begins
              2. The Dark Knight
              3. The Three Stooges
              4. Lockout
              5. Get the Gringo
              6. American Reunion
              7. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol
              8. Wrath of the Titans
              9. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
              10. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs

              Blu-ray Share:

Part of the reason Blu-ray didn't do better than it could have, and why The Three Stooges failed to be the week's top seller, was that the Blu-ray sales share for this comedy title was far below that of recent averages. At 34% for Blu-ray (meaning 66% of all discs sold were on DVD), it meant that The Three Stooges did not even make the Blu-ray market share top 20 table.

The other two new releases did much better. Lockout got 52.87%, while Get the Gringo had 51.9%, meaning both were more popular on Blu-ray than on DVD.

None of the new releases were on Blu-ray 3D.

              DVD: $98.38 million
This time last year, the top 10 Blu-ray chart had a better look about it. While the then new release Limitless failed to be the top seller for the week, the strength of Rango and The Lincoln Lawyer helped both Blu-ray and DVD revenue to be higher than what it was this week.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $0.21m (down 0.9%), while DVD sales decreased by a more substantial $17.71m (down 18%) producing an overall loss of $17.92 million in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share still managed to rise, from 19.17% to 22.28%.

                Stats:

For the week ending 28th July 2012, here are the stats:

                Percentage of revenue:
                Blu-ray vs DVD: 21.05% vs 78.95%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $19.82 million
DVD sales total spending: $74.35 million

                These stats available from here:

                Home Media Magazine

                Top 10:

Another really, really quiet week. In fact, there was just the single new release in the Blu-ray top 10, and only one more if you take into account the next 10. Neither threatened to come anywhere near the top selling Blu-ray of the week, the first released in 2008 'Batman Begins'. 'The Dark Knight' followed closely in second place.

The actual best selling new release for the week was Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season One, coming in at a low 4th place, selling a third as many copies as the number one seller. Still, given that it's a boxset, and a pricey one at that, it has done well. This was also a Blu-ray exclusive, so without it, the Blu-ray numbers might have looked even worse (as they are, both Blu-ray revenue and marke share dropped compared to last week, and remains well below average for the year).

Silent House just about made the combined Blu-ray and DVD top 10, but failed to make the Blu-ray top 10 - coming in at 14th.

And that was pretty much it for another quiet week. The following week doesn't look much better either, but the middle of August is when things start to heat up with the release of The Hunger Games, with The Dictator marching in the following week, and then Battleship + a bunch of TV shows (including The Walking Dead, Homeland, Once Upon A Time, Boardwalk Empire, Sons of Anarchy ...) to round off August. The good times will be here again ... soon.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                1. Batman Begins
                2. The Dark Knight
                3. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol
                4. *Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season One
                5. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
                6. Lockout
                7. American Reunion
                8. Rio
                9. Wrath of the Titans
                10. The Three Stooges

                Blu-ray Share:

With the first season of Star Trek: TNG being a Blu-ray exclusive release, the only other new release whose Blu-ray sales share is worth examining is Silent House, which came in at 42.73% for Blu-ray (and so 57.27% for DVD). Neither releases were available on Blu-ray 3D.

                DVD: $90.23 million
It was quiet this time last year too, but at least there was the release of Source Code. Without a similar release this year, Blu-ray revenue still managed to stay relatively flat compared to this time last year, but DVD revenue continues to drop for various reasons.

Blu-ray sales increased by $0.08m (up 0.4%), while DVD sales decreased by $15.88m (down 17.6%) producing an overall loss of $15.8 million in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share managed to rise, from 17.95% to 19.82%.

                  Stats:

For the week ending 4th August 2012, here are the stats:

                  Percentage of revenue:
                  Blu-ray vs DVD: 18.87% vs 81.13%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $17.63 million
DVD sales total spending: $75.78 million

                  Top 10:

The calm before the storm, perhaps, as lack of new releases sees Blu-ray market share drop below 20% for the first time since January to the lowest point since September 2011. Blu-ray revenue dropped to its lowest point since September 2010!

The only true new release in the Blu-ray top 20 was Hatfields & McCoys, a made for TV mini-series. It was 2nd place on the Blu-ray top 10 charts. LOL was also new, but it failed to make the Blu-ray top 20 due to its poor performance on Blu-ray - it only made $50,000 at the US box office, despite it being a vehicle for Miley Cyrus.

While "true" new releases were rare, on the Blu-ray charts, Total Recall: Mind-Bending Edition was a new re-release, coming in at a respectable 5th place.

And amazingly, that was it for the week. Batman Begins led the charts again, although only narrowly beating Hatfields & McCoys. The Bourne Trilogy makes its way back into the top 10 thanks to the new movie tie-in.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                  1. Batman Begins
                  2. Hatfields & McCoys
                  3. The Dark Knight
                  4. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol
                  5. Total Recall: Mind-Bending Edition
                  6. *The Mel Brooks Collection
                  7. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
                  8. Wrath of the Titans
                  9. The Bourne Trilogy
                  10. American Reunion

                  Blu-ray Share:

Hatfields & McCoys's 34% Blu-ray sales share (meaning 34% of all disc sales were on the Blu-ray format, with the rest being on DVDs) is probably just about right for this type of release.

LOL bombed at the box office, and it bombed on Blu-ray too, with only a 10% sales share, unseen since the early days of the format.

No 3D new releases this week again.

                  DVD: $112.1 million
A somewhat unfair comparison, with this time last year featuring the release of the hit movie Rio. As a result, Blu-ray revenue, DVD revenue and even Blu-ray market share all dropped when compared to the same week last year.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $10.49m (down 37.3%), while DVD sales decreased by $36.32m (down 32.4%) producing an overall loss of $46.81 million in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share also managed to fall, from 20.05% to 18.87%.

Things will start heating up with next week's release of The Lorax, a $200m+ box office hit.

                    Stats:

For the week ending 11th August 2012, here are the stats:

                    Percentage of revenue:
                    Blu-ray vs DVD: 25.20% vs 74.80%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $28.91 million

                    Top 10:

Just the one A-list release this week, but it was enough to take Blu-ray revenue and market share back up from the recent lows. The Lorax was the top selling title for the week, easily, as it outsold the second most popular Blu-ray title, Batman Begins, by almost a 20 to 1 margin.

The next highest ranked new release on Blu-ray was the documentary, Marley, coming in at 5th.

Grimm: Season One was the only other Blu-ray new release that managed to make the combined Blu-ray and DVD top 20, but it just failed to make it into the Blu-ray only top 20, coming in at 11th.

So not quite the blockbuster week that may become more and more common towards the end of the year, but still a good enough week to take Blu-ray revenue and market share back to the yearly average. The Hunger Games is released next week, along with a swath of new seasons of TV shows, and so expect the numbers to get bigger and bigger from this point onwards.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                    1. The Lorax
                    2. Batman Begins
                    3. The Dark Knight
                    4. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol
                    5. Marley
                    6. Hatfields & McCoys
                    7. The Expendables
                    8. Total Recall: Mind-Bending Edition
                    9. Despicable Me
                    10. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

                    Blu-ray Share:

The Lorax managed to score a Blu-ray sales share of 46.77%, meaning that 46.77% of all disc sales were on Blu-ray or in a combo package (the rest, 53.23%, was for DVD). The Lorax was available on Blu-ray 3D in a combo package, which accounted for 7% of all discs sales (or just under 15% of all Blu-ray/combo sales).

Despite being a music documentary, Marley did impressive business on Blu-ray too, getting 38%, even beating Grimm: Season 1 at 37%.

                      Stats:

For the week ending 18th August 2012, here are the stats:

                      Percentage of revenue:
                      Blu-ray vs DVD: 26.83% vs 73.17%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $39.64 million
DVD sales total spending: $108.08 million

                      These stats available from here:

                      Home Media Magazine

                      Top 10:

Blu-ray market share and sales rose to its highest weekly result since June, thanks to the release of the blockbuster smash hit The Hunger Games. It outsold the second placed 'The Lorax' by almost a 5 to 1 margin.

The rest of the combined Blu-ray and DVD sales chart were dominated by TV show boxsets, but only two actually made the Blu-ray top 10. And they were Dexter: The Sixth Season, coming in at 4th, and Glee: The Complete Third Season at 10th place. It still surprises me that yet another season of Community isn't available on Blu-ray - this is one of the shows that actually do feature people watching Blu-ray movies, and one that's actually made by Sony too, so there must be some backstory to this.

But jumping back a few places in the Blu-ray charts, the first-time on Blu-ray release of Jaws as part of Universal's 100th anniversary celebration, while not a Blu-ray exclusive, was practically one anyway with almost all buyers choosing to buy the Blu-ray combo version over the DVD-only version (more on that later). It took third place on the Blu-ray charts.

The Raid: Redemption managed a 5th place finish.

These releases contributed to Blu-ray market share being the 4th highest recorded for this year. It would have been higher if the performance of The Hunger Games was better, comparatively, on Blu-ray.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                      1. The Hunger Games
                      2. The Lorax
                      3. Jaws
                      4. Dexter: The Sixth Season
                      5. The Raid: Redemption
                      6. Wrath of the Titans
                      7. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
                      8. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol
                      9. Total Recall: Mind-Bending Edition
                      10. Glee: The Complete Third Season

                      Blu-ray Share:

While the Blu-ray results were impressive, they could have been better if The Hunger Games had done better than the 43.44% recorded. The main reason was because The Hunger Games did not come in a Blu-ray and DVD combo (instead, it was a Blu-ray and Ultraviolet combo), and so the Blu-ray results did not include those that wanted to future-proof their purchase, or wanted to split and share the package with their non Blu-ray owning friends/family. The sheer popularity of the release also meant that it was more of a mainstream release, and the mainstream still consists of many who have not jumped on-board the Blu-ray train.

As hinted at earlier, Jaws' 94.42% makes the release practically a Blu-ray exclusive, since it appears DVD owners were not keen to add a new edition of the movie to their collection, which most likely already features at least one edition of this all time classic. With this kind of numbers, you have to question whether having a DVD equivalent was even necessary.

Dexter: The Sixth Season was the better performer out of the two TV series boxsets that made the Blu-ray top 10, the other being the third season of Glee. Dexter managed 22%, while Glee managed 18%. Both sets improved upon last year/season's results, with Dexter going from 17% to 22%, and Glee going from 13.72% to 18%.

The Raid: Redemption's 59.72% is the standout of this week's new releases, no doubt.

None of this week's new releases were available on 3D.

                        Stats:

For the week ending 25th August 2012, here are the stats:

                        Blu-ray vs DVD: 26.4% vs 73.6%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $37.95 million
DVD sales total spending: $105.81 million

                        These stats available from here:

                        Home Media Magazine

                        Top 10:

A plethora of new releases littered the combined Blu-ray and DVD top 20 this week, but none were popular enough to unseat The Hunger Games nor The Lorax from the top 1 and 2 positions, even on the Blu-ray only charts.

The Dictator ended up being the most popular of the new Blu-ray releases, coming in at 3rd, but still outsold by The Hunger Games by nearly a 17-to-1 ratio.

Disney was busy this week, releasing a bunch of new titles on Blu-ray. These include Pocahontas 2-Movie Collection (4th), The Rescuers: 2-Movie Collection (5th), The Aristocats: Special Edition (7th), Chimpanzee (8th, and Blu-ray exclusive), The Tigger Movie: Bounce-A-Rrrific Special Edition (9th) and Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure (10th, also Blu-ray exclusive).

The combine Blu-ray and DVD top 20 also featured other new releases, including NCIS: The Ninth Season, The Closer: The Complete Seventh and Final Season, Bernie and House: Season Eight - The Final Season, but only the latter two were on Blu-ray (both failed to make the Blu-ray top 10).

With so many new releases, revenue for both disc formats and market share for Blu-ray still somehow managed to drop compared to last week - the strength of The Hunger Games is really dictating sales at the moment.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                        1. The Hunger Games
                        2. The Lorax
                        3. The Dictator
                        4. Pocahontas 2-Movie Collection
                        5. The Rescuers: 2-Movie Collection
                        6. Jaws
                        7. The Aristocats: Special Edition
                        8. *Chimpanzee
                        9. The Tigger Movie: Bounce-A-Rrrific Special Edition
                        10. *Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure

                        Blu-ray Share:

All of the Disney releases did exceptionally well on Blu-ray, but that was probably to be expected from these mostly catalog releases of titles that had been on DVD for ages already. The Rescuers two movie pack did the best, with 69.38% of all disc based sales belonging to the Blu-ray/combo version. The Aristocats closely behind at 66.45%, Pocahontas two movie pack at 62.74% and The Tigger movie at 59.37%. Chimpanzee and Lady and the Tramp II were Blu-ray exclusives.

The only non Disney new release in the top 10, The Dictator, managed 47.61%, which is more than respectable.

The Hunger Games's Blu-ray sales share for this week was 41.18%, down a little compared to last week.

None of this week's new releases were available on 3D.

                        DVD: $91.77 million
Both Blu-ray and DVD revenue rose compared to the same week last year, with Blu-ray rising by much more. Coincidentally, the same week last year was also "dominated" by Disney in terms of new releases - but that was because Bambi II was the sole new release back then in the entire top 10.

Blu-ray sales increased by $20.35m (up 115.6%), while DVD sales increased by $14.04m (up 15.3%) producing an overall gain of $34.39 million in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share grew, from 16.09% to 26.4%.

                          Stats:

For the week ending 1st September 2012, here are the stats:

                          Percentage of revenue:
                          Blu-ray vs DVD: 25.75% vs 74.25%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $37.19 million
DVD sales total spending: $107.25 million

                          These stats available from here:

                          Home Media Magazine

                          Top 10:

Another week crammed full of new releases, but Blu-ray revenue still managed to drop compared to the last week, along with Blu-ray market share. And this is despite the week's top selling Blu-ray, and new release, Battleship doing extremely well on Blu-ray.

The reason for the slight drops can be attributed to some of the new releases doing not as well on Blu-ray, although as some were TV series releases, it was somewhat understandable.

But The Walking Dead: The Complete Second Season did do pretty well on Blu-ray, and this helped it début at 3rd place, just behind The Hunger Games - it only came 5th in the combined Blu-ray and DVD chart, and two other new releases both ranked higher than it in this chart.

Those releases were The Lucky One and Think Like a Man, ending up 4th and 5th respectively on the Blu-ray only chart.

There were three more new releases in the Blu-ray top 10, including Sons of Anarchy: Season Four, The Pirates! Band of Misfits and Boardwalk Empire: The Complete Second Season - they were in 6th, 8th and 9th respectively.

Some new releases also didn't make the Blu-ray top 10. These included Once Upon a Time: The Complete First Season, Homeland: The Complete First Season and Starship Troopers: Invasion.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                          1. Battleship
                          2. The Hunger Games
                          3. The Walking Dead: The Complete Second Season
                          4. The Lucky One
                          5. Think Like a Man
                          6. Sons of Anarchy: Season Four
                          7. The Lorax
                          8. The Pirates! Band of Misfits
                          9. Boardwalk Empire: The Complete Second Season
                          10. The Dictator

                          Blu-ray Share:

As hinted at earlier, Battleship did extremely well on Blu-ray, garnering a Blu-ray sales share of 61.12% (meaning the DVD only editions only managed to get 38.88% of all disc sales).

The Walking Dead: The Complete Second Season also did extremely well for a TV series box set, getting 50.27%, which may very well be the first single season TV boxset that did better on Blu-ray than on DVD.

The Pirates! Band of Misfits also did well at 46.36%. This title was also available on Blu-ray 3D, with the 3D version getting 10% of all sales.

Next up on the sales share chart was Boardwalk Empire: The Complete Second Season, at 45.03%. The rest of the new releases didn't make the sales share top 20, and these titles are mainly why Blu-ray revenue dropped while DVD revenue rose compared to last week.

For example, The Lucky One only managed a Blu-ray sales share of 24% - below average for new releases, but probably about right for this genre. Also in the romantic genre was Think Like a Man, which also only managed 24%.

And some of the other TV series Blu-rays didn't do as well as The Walking Dead either. Sons of Anarchy: Season Four got 26%, Once Upon a Time: The Complete First Season with 28%, Homeland: The Complete First Season with 32%.

The highest ranking new release was actually Starship Troopers: Invasion, with a sales share of 68.97%.

The Hunger Games dropped out of the sales share top 20, with 36% of all discs for this title being on Blu-ray.

Another good week for both Blu-ray and DVD, as both continued to do better than the same week last year (which was another quiet one in terms of new releases)..

Blu-ray sales increased by $18.92m (up 103.6%), while DVD sales increased by $5.4m (up 5.3%) producing an overall gain of $24.32 million in combined revenue.

For the week ending 8th September 2012, here are the stats:

                            Percentage of revenue:
                            Blu-ray vs DVD: 21.58% vs 78.42%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $25.58 million
DVD sales total spending: $92.98 million

                            Top 10:

A quieter week than the last couple, with the week's top selling new release not managing to unseat the powerhouses of Battleship and The Hunger Games. As a result, both Blu-ray revenue and market share fell compared to last week.

Safe managed to comfortably grab 3rd spot, well ahead of another new release, The Five-Year Engagement in 4th place.

Fringe: The Complete Fourth Season was the only other new release in the Blu-ray top 10, finishing in 7th.

There were other new releases in the Blu-ray and DVD combined top 20, including Grey's Anatomy: The Complete Eighth Season (11th), Criminal Minds: The Seventh Season (15th), The Office: Season Eight (16th) and Person of Interest: The Complete First Season (19th). Only the latter two were available on Blu-ray though.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                            1. Battleship
                            2. The Hunger Games
                            3. Safe
                            4. The Five-Year Engagement
                            5. The Walking Dead: The Complete Second Season
                            6. The Lorax
                            7. Fringe: The Complete Fourth Season
                            8. The Lucky One
                            9. The Pirates! Band of Misfits
                            10. Think Like a Man

                            Blu-ray Share:

Battleship continued to sell better on Blu-ray than on DVD, with a Blu-ray sales share of 51.24%, and The Hunger Games was still doing a solid 35%.

For the new releases, Safe managed 43.78%, while The Five-Year Engagement's 40.67% is actually quite good for a title in this genre.

Fringe: The Complete Fourth Season got 34%, which is very good for a TV series (compared to Person of Interest's 32% and The Office's 16%). The previous season of Fringe had a sales share of 31.23% when it was released in the same week a year ago.

No 3D releases for this week.

                            DVD: $103.20 million
Reversing the trend of the previous two weeks, both Blu-ray and DVD revenue dropped compared to the same week last year, which was the week that the hit X-Men: First Class was released, along with the Blu-ray exclusive release of Scarface, and also Hanna. So the drops are somewhat understandable.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $1.21m (down 4.5%), while DVD sales decreased by $10.22m (down 9.9%) producing an overall loss of $11.43 million in combined revenue.

For the week ending 15th September 2012, here are the stats:

                              Top 10:

Both Blu-ray and DVD spending is up this week compared to last week, but Blu-ray rose higher, which allowed Blu-ray market share to rise too. And this was largely thanks to two new releases, Snow White and the Huntsman and the first time on Blu-ray release of Titanic. These two did enough to end the dominance of The Hunger Games, which dropped to 5th and 6th respectively.

Snow White outsold the second placed Titanic by nearly a 3 to 1 margin, while Titanic outsold the 3rd placed title by nearly a 4 to 1 margin. That third place belonged to The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Fifth Season.

Spartacus: Vengeance was 4th, while What to Expect When You're Expecting managed a 7th placed finish.

The Blu-ray top 10 was rounded off by The Vampire Diaries: The Complete Third Season in 10th place.

A few titles made the combined DVD and Blu-ray top 10, but didn't get into the Blu-ray top 10: Barbie: The Princess & The Popstar and Castle: The Complete Fourth Season finished 4th and 8th in the combined charts, but neither were available on HD.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                              1. Snow White and the Huntsman
                              2. Titanic
                              3. The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Fifth Season
                              4. Spartacus: Vengeance
                              5. The Hunger Games
                              6. Battleship
                              7. What to Expect When You're Expecting
                              8. The Lorax
                              9. Safe
                              10. The Vampire Diaries: The Complete Third Season

                              Blu-ray Share:

While Titanic wasn't a Blu-ray exclusive release, there's no doubt that this re-release, including the release of the 3D version, was very much aimed at the Blu-ray market. As such, Titanic managed a Blu-ray sales share of 82.07%, meaning that only 17.93% opted for the DVD only version of the re-release. A huge 37% of disc buyers chose to buy the 3D version.

Snow White and the Huntsman also did very well on Blu-ray, garnering a Blu-ray sales share of 55.04%.

Spartacus: Vengeance managed 43.64%. "What to Expect" got 23.75%, with The Vampire Diaries: Season 3 getting 21.69% and season 5 of The Big Bang Theory at 20.27%.

The Hunger Games maintained its near 35% sales share, while Battleship stayed near the 50% mark.

                              DVD: $108.22 million
Despite the good selection of new releases, and an A-lister in Snow White (and not to mention Titanic), DVD revenue, Blu-ray revenue and Blu-ray market share all dropped compared to the same week last year. But this time last year, Thor and Star Wars were making their disc and Blu-ray débuts, so the result is somewhat understandable.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $23.88m (down 41.1%), while DVD sales decreased by $7.47m (down 6.9%) producing an overall loss of $31.35 million in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share declined, from 34.93% to 25.35%.

                                Top 10:

Not even Indy can save the week ending 22nd September from seeing a decrease in both Blu-ray revenue and market share (DVD revenue also dropped), compared to the previous week.

The Blu-ray exclusive release of Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures was the week's top selling Blu-ray title, but despite having this advantage, Blu-ray market share actually managed to drop compared to last week. This is most likely explained by slowing sales numbers for Snow White and the Huntsman, which debuted last week on with more copies being sold for the Blu-ray format - this has reversed this week. The poorer than average results of some of the new releases on Blu-ray also ensured Blu-ray market share would drop.

There were a couple of other new releases, but none were what you would call A-List.

The Cabin in the Woods managed to get closest to Indiana Jones out of the new releases, at 2nd place.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua 3: Viva La Fiesta! managed a respectable 5th place, Katy Perry: Part of Me got 7th, and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel finished off the list of new releases in the top 10 by finishing 9th.

Supernatural: The Complete Seventh Season came 7th on the combined Blu-ray and DVD sales charts, but did not do well enough on Blu-ray to get into the top 10 (finishing 11th). The same can be said of Modern Family: The Complete Third Season (12th on the combined chart, 13th on the Blu-ray only chart). Katt Williams: Kattpacalypse was also new, but wasn't available on Blu-ray.

The Avengers will be released in the week following the one covered here, so think of this week as the calm before the storm.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                                1. *Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures
                                2. The Cabin in the Woods
                                3. Snow White and the Huntsman
                                4. Titanic
                                5. Beverly Hills Chihuahua 3: Viva La Fiesta!
                                6. The Hunger Games
                                7. Katy Perry: Part of Me
                                8. Battleship
                                9. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
                                10. The Lorax

                                Blu-ray Share:

Of all the new releases, other than the Blu-ray exclusive Indiana Jones box set, The Cabin in the Woods did the best on Blu-ray - 53.90% of all disc sales for the movie was on Blu-ray. The next best was Katy Perry: Part of Me, at 39.36%.

None of the other new releases made the top 20 for Blu-ray sales share, Beverly Hills Chihuahua 3: Viva La Fiesta! only got 22%, which was still better than the 19% for Modern Family: The Complete Third Season, 18% for Supernatural: The Complete Seventh Season and 15% for The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

Katy Perry: Part of Me was the only new release to be available on Blu-ray 3D, getting a 8.23% sales share (roughly 21% of all those that chose to purchase the Blu-ray/combo version chose to get the 3D package).

                                Year on Year Comparison

The stats for the week ending 24th September 2011 are as follows. Some small adjustments to the data posted last year (based on more recent updates) has been made and is shown below.

                                Blu-ray: $47.56 million
                                DVD: $112.63 million
Another all red week, and while the same week last year was relatively poor in terms of new releases (Bridesmaids topped the sales charts), the force was certainly with Star Wars back then, and Indy was no match.

As a result, Blu-ray sales decreased by $18.93m (down 39.8%), while DVD sales decreased by $23.09m (down 20.5%) producing an overall loss of $42.02 million in combined revenue, even bigger than last week's revenue loss.

Blu-ray's market share declined, from 29.69% to 24.23%.

The Avengers should help restore "normality" next week.
