    Stats:

For the week ending 30th August 2014, here are the stats:

    Percentage of revenue:
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 26.47% vs 73.53%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $25.85 million
DVD sales total spending: $71.81 million

    These stats available from here:

    Home Media Magazine

    Top 10:

Last week's high only lasted a week, as Blu-ray revenue and market shared dropped back down following last week's A-list release of 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2'. On Blu-ray, it was still the best selling title for the week, easily beating this week's top selling new Blu-ray, The Walking Dead: The Complete Fourth Season.

When you add in DVD sales, the new season of 'The Walking Dead' wasn't actually the best seller - it was Blended - it was just that the zombie series did better on Blu-ray, although only just.

Being that time of the year, another TV season box set Sons of Anarchy: Season Six was a new best seller, coming in at 5th.

And that was it for new Blu-ray releases in the top 20. Both Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return and The Possession of Michael King, while making the combined Blu-ray and DVD top 20 (at 17th and 18th respectively), did not sell enough on Blu-ray to get into the top 20.

So no new A-list release, plus a poor showing for new releases both in popularity and quantity, meant another ho-hum week for Blu-ray (and DVD).

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
    1. The Amazing Spider-Man 2
    2. The Walking Dead: The Complete Fourth Season
    3. Blended
    4. Divergent
    5. Sons of Anarchy: Season Six
    6. God's Not Dead
    7. * The Amazing Spider-Man 2-Pack
    8. Noah
    9. Muppets Most Wanted
    10. The Other Woman

    Blu-ray Sales Share:

BD sales share for a title is the percentage of disc packages sold for this movie that contained the Blu-ray edition of the film (including combos). So a BD sales share of 60% indicates that 60% of disc packages sold for this particular film contained the Blu-ray edition for this film.

Of this week's new releases, 'The Walking Dead: The Complete Fourth Season' did best in terms of BD sales share, with 38.41%. 'Blended' managed 34.45%.

Despite not coming in the Blu-ray top 20, 'Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return' managed a BD sales share of 28.92%, bettering the 21% for 'Sons of Anarchy: Season Six' and the 15% for 'The Possession of Michael King'.

None of this week's top ranking new releases were available on Blu-ray 3D.

    Year on Year Comparison

The stats for the week ending 31st August 2013 are as follows. Some small adjustments to the data posted last year (based on more recent updates) has been made and is shown below.

Another 'all red' week, with this week's weak slate up against this time last year's 'The Great Gatsby'. Worth noting that this week's best selling new release, the new season of 'The Walking Dead', was only last week's 3rd best selling new release (for the then new season 3). Also noteworthy that the BD sales share for season 3 was actually higher (39.81%) than for season 4 (38.41%). The same comparison for 'Sons of Anarchy' showed no growth for Blu-ray compared to DVD over the last year. Is Blu-ray becoming less popular compared to DVD, or is the prevalence of HD streaming and downloading options finally starting to hurt the HD disc format?

Blu-ray sales increased by $5.48m (down 17.5%), while DVD sales decreased by $13.48m (down 15.8%) producing $18.96 million less in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share decreased from 26.87% to 26.47%.

      Top 10:

Another super quiet week (too many of these recently, don't you think?), and Blu-ray revenue and market share suitably responded by diving to recent lows. In fact, Blu-ray market share was at its lowest since August 2013!

Draft Day was the only new release in the top 10, and was the week's best seller on Blu-ray.

In fact, the only other new release in the top 20 was Moms' Night Out, which came in at 11th.

Other than these two titles, there's not much to say about this very quiet week.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
      1. Draft Day
      2. The Amazing Spider-Man 2

          Stats:

For the week ending 13th September 2014, here are the stats:

          Percentage of revenue:
          Blu-ray vs DVD: 34.37% vs 65.63%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $38.31 million
DVD sales total spending: $73.15 million

          These stats available from here:

          Home Media Magazine

          Top 10:

As you can tell by reading the revenue and market share figures above, we once again have an A-list release this week. Captain America: The Winter Soldier stormed to the top of the sales charts and completely dominated the week.

It was so dominant that the second placed Brick Mansions sold 20 times less than the latest 'Captain America' movie. This new release also allowed the previous movie, 'Captain America: The First Avenger', to get back into the top 10 at 7th.

As expected at this time of the year, there were lots of TV series releases. The best performing of the TV boxsets was Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - The Complete First Season, at 5th. The next best was Homeland: The Complete Third Season at 9th.

The rest of the new releases didn't do well enough to make the top 10. The closest to getting into the top 10 was The Hornet's Nest at 11th. Another TV boxset Supernatural: The Complete Ninth Season came in at 14th, while The Vampire Diaries: The Complete Fifth Season didn't even sell enough to get into the top 20.

Star Trek: The Compendium was in 19th place.

So quite a few new releases, but the only one that really mattered was the one at the top.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
          1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
          2. Brick Mansions
          3. The Amazing Spider-Man 2
          4. Draft Day
          5. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - The Complete First Season
          6. Divergent
          7. Captain America: The First Avenger
          8. Blended
          9. Homeland: The Complete Third Season
          10. God's Not Dead

          Blu-ray Sales Share:

The only title that did better than 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' in terms of BD sales share was 'Captain America: The First Avenger', with the former getting 60.35% and the latter at 63.94%. The new Captain America movie was also available on Blu-ray 3D, the only new release this week to come on the format, with 25.46% of buyers choosing to buy the 3D version.

'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - The Complete First Season' got 39.02%. 'Brick Mansion' got 36.80%, while 'The Hornet's Nest' managed 30.23%.

Wrapping up the TV boxset new releases, 'Homeland: The Complete Third Season' got 24%, 'Supernatural: The Complete Ninth Season' got 18% and 'The Vampire Diaries: The Complete Fifth Season' managed 17%.

Despite this week's hugely improving results, it was another 'all red' week. This week's 'Winter Soldier' was up against this time last year's 'Star Trek Into Darkness', so perhaps not the fairest of fights.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $8.81m (down 18.7%), while DVD sales decreased by $12.41m (down 14.5%) producing $21.22 million less in combined revenue.

            Top 10:

Two other A-list releases this week helped Blu-ray market share and revenue remain at last week's highs. The 2014 Godzilla was the clear best seller for the week, ahead of the number two placed, and also new release, The Fault in Our Stars.

There was still room for a couple of more new releases in the top 10.

The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Seventh Season came 4th, while Think Like a Man Too and Arrow: The Complete Second Season came in at 5th and 8th respectively.

Also new to Blu-ray was the Ghostbusters 1 & 2 remastered in 4K editions, which did very well and came in at 6th.

Outside of the top 10, we have Barbie and the Secret Door in 13th, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre: 40th Anniversary Edition at 15th, Sleepy Hollow: The Complete First Season in 18th and Hannibal: Season Two in 19th.

And finishing outside of the Blu-ray top 20, but in the combined DVD and Blu-ray top 20 was the Walmart exclusive 'The Perfect Wave'.

            Whew ...

So quality and quantity, and while the quality wasn't quite as impressive as 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' last week, the more new releases this week allowed Blu-ray and DVD revenue to both rise compared to last week's high.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
            1. Godzilla
            2. The Fault in Our Stars
            3. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
            4. The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Seventh Season
            5. Think Like a Man Too
            6. * Ghostbusters 1 & 2
            7. The Amazing Spider-Man 2
            8. Arrow: The Complete Second Season
            9. Brick Mansions
            10. Divergent

Being virtually exclusive, the newly remastered 'Ghostbusters' films had the highest BD sales share, at 94.58%. This was followed by 'The Texas Chain Saw Massacre: 40th Anniversary Edition' with 67.03% and 'Godzilla' at 58.22%.

'Hannibal: Season Two' also went above the 50% mark, at 51.48%, which is very impressive for a TV show box set (although still down from last season's 54.62%). 'Arrow: The Complete Second Season' just missed out on doing the same with 46.02% (up from 43.20% for last season's box set).

Further back was 'The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Seventh Season' with 30.32%, while 'Sleepy Hollow: The Complete First Season' managed 29.57%, which are more the normal sort of results you see with TV box sets.

'Think Like a Man Too' managed 29.54%. 'Barbie and the Secret Door' and 'The Perfect Wave' got 14% and 10% respectively.

Only 'Godzilla' was released on Blu-ray 3D, with a BD3D sales share of 9.14%.

              Stats:

For the week ending 27th September 2014, here are the stats:

              Percentage of revenue:
              Blu-ray vs DVD: 28.17% vs 71.83%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $27.37 million

              Top 10:

After two busy weeks of new releases, we're back to a slow week and Blu-ray revenue and market share took an expected drive.

Neighbors was the week's top selling new release on Blu-ray, which wasn't hard because it was the only new release in the top 10. What was harder was it becoming the week's overall top seller on Blu-ray, beating last week's number 1, Godzilla (2014).

While strictly speaking, there was one more "new" release in the Blu-ray top 10, new to Blu-ray, but not a new movie. Halloween: The Complete Collection ranked 7th this week.

Outside of the top 10, we also have Saw: The Complete Movie Collection in 13th, and a proper "new" release, Attack on Titan Part II in 15th.

That was it for the week though, and once again, we see how much influence new releases have on the weekly Blu-ray results.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
              1. Neighbors
              2. Godzilla
              3. The Fault in Our Stars
              4. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
              5. The Amazing Spider-Man 2
              6. * Halloween: The Complete Collection
              7. Brick Mansions
              8. Think Like a Man Too
              9. Frozen

'Neighbors' debuts with a BD sales share of 43.17%. Coincidentally, all of the other new releases were Blu-ray only/exclusive releases.

None of the new releases were available on Blu-ray 3D.

Another 'all red' week - what a difference a week makes! Understandable though, given that the same week last year was when the mega-hit 'Iron Man 3' was first released.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $19.1m (down 41.1%), while DVD sales decreased by $9.43m (down 11.9%) producing $28.53 million less in combined revenue.

I think, this is the worst decrease value for BD ever...

To be fair, if you compare the two week's major releases, 'Iron Man 3' vs 'Neighbors', that's where the differences come from. The weekly results are very much influenced by the release slate, but the underlying trend may still be an upwards one I think, but sales have definitely slowed down a bit (a better comparison would be to compare to equally quiet weeks, perhaps something like September 6th this year with a similar week last year, and compare the growth).

Which reminds me, I'm way overdue on this year's "Blu-ray: State of Play" analysis report, which I hope I can write up sometime this or next week.

                    Stats:

For the week ending 4th October 2014, here are the stats:

                    Percentage of revenue:
                    Blu-ray vs DVD: 35.20% vs 64.80%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $40.09 million
DVD sales total spending: $73.80 million

                    These stats available from here:

                    Home Media Magazine

                    Top 10:

Another A-list release, a movie that made nearly $250 million at the box office, was the week's best selling title and new release. Transformers: Age of Extinction. This, alongside the Blu-ray (and Walmart) exclusive 'Transformers 4-Film Collection' (6th), and the Blu-ray re-release of the 75th anniversary edition of Gone With the Wind (8th) (are we really going to have one of these every five years now?), helped Blu-ray revenue rise considerably compared to recent weeks, breaking the $40 million barrier for the first time since June.

DVD revenue failed to rise as much (due to the Blu-ray exclusives, and the popularity of the new Transformers movie on Blu-ray compared to DVD), and so Blu-ray weekly market share was also at its highest since June (that week in June was particular busy, with 'The Lego Movie' being released).

The week's other notable new releases were Chef in 7th, Monster High: Freaky Fusion in 10th, 24: Live Another Day in 12th and Leprechaun: The Complete Movie Collection in 13th. Leprechaun: Origins made the combined Blu-ray and DVD top 20, but failed to rank in the Blu-ray top 20 as it was not popular enough.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                    1. Transformers: Age of Extinction
                    2. Neighbors
                    3. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
                    4. Godzilla
                    5. The Fault in Our Stars
                    6. * Transformers 4-Film Collection (Walmart Exclusive)
                    7. Chef
                    8. * Gone With the Wind
                    9. The Amazing Spider-Man 2
                    10. Monster High: Freaky Fusion

As the new edition of 'Gone with the Wind' was only available on Blu-ray, the BD sales share for *all* 'Gone with the Wind' disc editions (including the old DVD editions) was 90.01%. The week's big hit, 'Transformers: Age of Extinction', also did great on Blu-ray with 62.52% (almost 2 in 3 copies sold were on Blu-ray).

'Chef' did okay with 42.59%, with '24: Live Another Day' getting 38.88%. The week's other new releases did less well, with 'Leprechaun: Origins' getting only 12%, which was still better than the 11% obtained by 'Monster High: Freaky Fusion'.

As expected, 'Transformers: Age of Extinction' was available on Blu-ray 3D with 7.35% of buyers opting for this more expensive version. None of the other new releases were on 3D.

The stats for the week ending 5th October 2013 are as follows. Some small adjustments to the data posted last year (based on more recent updates) has been made and is shown below.

                    DVD: $84.44 million
Despite this week's big release, the same week last year had bigger releases it seems, with 'The Little Mermaid' and 'The Croods' combining to easily beat this week in all areas (so another "all red" week).

Blu-ray sales decreased by $15.21m (down 27.5%), while DVD sales decreased by $10.64m (down 12.6%) producing $25.85 million less in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share decreased from 39.55% to 35.2%.

                      Top 10:

While Blu-ray revenue and market share was still at a relative high, it fell away a bit from the highs of last week, despite the release of Edge of Tomorrow. While it was the week's top selling title, it just wasn't as popular as last week's sci-fi release, 'Transformers: Age of Extinction'.

The next best selling new release was a Disney re-release, Sleeping Beauty: Diamond Edition. It finished in 3rd, but could have easily came 2nd.

In 4th place was another new release, A Million Ways to Die in the West, just ahead of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods in 5th.

The next new release was in 9th, with Million Dollar Arm.

Outside of the top 10, we have American Horror Story: Coven om 11th and Vikings: The Complete Second Season just behind in 12th.

Duck Dynasty: Season 6 didn't make the Blu-ray top 20, but charted on the combined Blu-ray and DVD top 20.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                      1. Edge of Tomorrow

                      7. Godzilla
                      8. Neighbors
                      9. Million Dollar Arm
                      10. The Fault in Our Stars

The re-release of 'Sleeping Beauty' had the best BD sales share for the week, as expected, with 71.82% of buyers opting for the Blu-ray edition for this animated classic. Not too far behind was 'Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods' with 68.01%.

This week's top seller 'Edge of Tomorrow' didn't do too badly either, with 61.63% - another good result for a new top tier release. It was also the only new release available on Blu-ray 3D, with 11.12% of buyers opting for this more expensive edition.

'A Million Ways to Die in the West' managed 46.65%, while 'Vikings: The Complete Second Season' had 40.39%.

The rest of the new releases failed to make the BD sales share top 20, with 'Million Dollar Arm' and 'American Horror Story: Coven' both getting 27%, while 'Duck Dynasty: Season 6' is way behind with only 5%.

                        Stats:

For the week ending 18th October 2014, here are the stats:

                        Home Media Magazine

                        Top 10:

Two big releases, one definitely an A-lister, another that did over $100m at the box office, helped this week's revenue rise compared to last week.

X-Men: Days of Future Past was the week's clear top seller, easily beating the week's number two (another new release) Mr. Peabody & Sherman by more than a 3-to-1 margin.

These two titles, combined to produce more than $300 million at the box office, really helped Blu-ray revenue and market share, with the former almost breaking through the $40 million barrier.

Outside of these two releases, the week was actually very quiet (sometimes this is intentional, as studios like to span out their releases and make their smaller titles avoid the bigger ones). You have to go all the way to 14th on the Blu-ray chart to find the next new release, which was Fargo: Season One, which was the only other new release in the top 20.

But like I've mentioned many times here before, it's not about quantity, it's always about quality, and this week in the top 2 sellers we had that.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                        1. X-Men: Days of Future Past
                        2. Mr. Peabody & Sherman
                        3. Transformers: Age of Extinction
                        4. Sleeping Beauty: Diamond Edition
                        5. Edge of Tomorrow
                        6. A Million Ways to Die in the West
                        7. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
                        8. Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods
                        9. Godzilla
                        10. The Fault in Our Stars

BD sales share for a title is the percentage of disc packages sold for this movie that contained the Blu-ray edition of the film (including combos). So a BD sales share of 60% indicates that 60% of disc packages sold for this particular film contained the Blu-ray edition for this film.

Of the week's three new releases, 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' had the best BD sales share with 60.89%. 'Fargo: Season One' was the next best, and also had an over 50% sales share, with 50.51%.

'Mr. Peabody & Sherman' just failed to sell more on Blu-ray than on DVD, with a BD sales share of 47.64%.

The top two sellers were also available to buy on Blu-ray 3D. 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' had a quite high BD3D sales share of 12.97%, while 'Mr. Peabody & Sherman' managed only 3.42%.

                          Top 10:

We've had a few pretty good weeks in terms of new releases, but while there are a couple of new releases this week, none are what you would call A-listers, and so Blu-ray revenue and market share both dropped as a result.

Earth to Echo was the week's best selling new release, but only came 3rd in the overall Blu-ray charts - the top 2 was the same as last week.

Not too far behind in 4th place was The Purge: Anarchy, followed by Sex Tape in 6th place.

Closely behind in 7th place was Snowpiercer.

That was it for the top 10, but outside, there were a couple of new releases, consecutively from 17th to 19th. In order, it wasThe Fluffy Movie,See No Evil 2 and Wrong Turn 6: Last Resort.

So quite a lot of new releases, but without an A-lister to hold things up, Blu-ray revenue and market share took an expected dive.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):

'Snowpiercer' had the best BD sales share of the week, with 46.80%. 'The Purge: Anarchy' was the next best at 40.46%. 'Earth to Echo' had 39.90% while 'Sex Tape' managed 34.72%.

For the rest of the smaller releases, 'The Fluffy Movie' had 24%, 'See No Evil 2' got 19% and 'Wrong Turn 6: Last Resort' managed 14%.

None of this week's new releases in the top 20 were available on Blu-ray 3D.

Just one measure of comparison helped to prevent this week from being an 'all red' week, with Blu-ray market share still up compared to the same week last year.

Blu-ray's market share increased from 27.59% to 28.78%.

                            Top 10:

Another quiet week, and Blu-ray revenue and market share both dropped as expected.

The best selling new release of the week as Deliver Us From Evil, which only sold enough copies to get a 3rd place finish on the Blu-ray top 20 chart.

You have to then go all the way to 7th place to find the next new release, America: Imagine the World Without Her.

The next new release falls completely out of the top 10! At 14th place, we have Begin Again. The last new release in the top 10 was The Prince in 17th.

So while last week had the quantity, but not the quality, this week we have neither, and Blu-ray revenue and market share fell as a result.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                            1. X-Men: Days of Future Past
                            2. Mr. Peabody & Sherman
                            3. Deliver Us From Evil
                            4. Transformers: Age of Extinction
                            5. Earth to Echo
                            6. Sleeping Beauty: Diamond Edition
                            7. America: Imagine the World Without Her
                            8. Edge of Tomorrow
                            9. The Purge: Anarchy
                            10. Captain America: The Winter Soldier

For the week's four new releases, the 37.87% BD sales share earned by 'Deliver Us From Evil' was the best of a fairly average bunch. It was ahead of the 26% by 'America: Imagine the World Without Her', the 25% for 'Begin Again' and the 19% for 'The Prince'.

None of this week's new releases in the top 20 were available on Blu-ray 3D.

                            DVD: $87.49 million
Another 'all red' week, where all the performance metrics are down compared to the same week last year. Comparing the two week's release slate, whereas this week almost has nothing of note, compared to 'Monster University' from a year before, it's easy to see just why this week was so "down" in comparison.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $19.44m (down 46.6%), while DVD sales decreased by $21.17m (down 24.2%) producing $40.61 million less in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share also decreased from 32.29% to 25.15%.

                              Ouch

I think it was the biggest drop in the Blu-ray's market share history Even if can't compare the yearly figures directly, it seems, there are more and more drops in the Bly-ray's market shares, so I think, there will be quite interesting figures in the next year.

Blu-ray sales have definitely, well not slowed down, but the growth rate has definitely flattened a lot in the last year. I think it's mostly down to lack of really good new releases though, and also the lack of "first time on Blu-ray" exclusive titles (most of the popular ones have already been done).

The digital business is eating into both DVD and Blu-ray now I think. It used to be just DVD, but with most digital services offering fairly good quality HD these days, I think these platforms will definitely start to compete with Blu-ray for market share.
