Blu-ray vs DVD: 32.74% vs 67.26%

Top 10:

Another very quiet week meant that Blu-ray revenue fell back below the $30 million mark. The only new release in the top 10 was Sausage Party. It just managed to outsell last week's number one, 'Star Trek: Beyond'.

Outside of the top 10, Daredevil: The Complete First Season came in at 12th, while Kickboxer: Vengeance placed 17th.

Black Sails: The Complete Third Season didn't get into the Blu-ray top 20, but finished in 17th place on the combined Blu-ray and DVD chart.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Sony has made 'Sausage Party' available on Ultra HD Blu-ray, the only of this week's new releases to be made available on the 4K format.

BD sales share for a title is the percentage of disc packages sold for this movie that contained the Blu-ray edition of the film (including combos, and Ultra HD editions). So a BD sales share of 60% indicates that 60% of disc packages sold for this particular film contained the Blu-ray edition for this film, and so anything over 50% means that the Blu-ray version of the film was more popular than the DVD version.

'Sausage Party' managed a BD sales share of 38.89%, which is fairly average for a new release. Not that the other new releases did much better, with 'Black Sails: The Complete Third Season' getting 35% and 'Kickboxer: Vengeance' getting 34%.

As mentioned earlier, 'Sausage Party' was available on Ultra HD Blu-ray as well, but received a pretty average 3.16%.

Another "all red" week, as 'Sausage Party' this week was no match for 'Terminator: Genisys' (which was also joined by 'Trainwreck', and a new edition of 'Star Wars: Episode IV').

Blu-ray sales decreased by $12.7m (down 31.9%), while DVD sales decreased by $14.54m (down 20.7%) producing $27.24 million less in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share decreased from 36.18% to 32.74%.

Top 10:

Some big releases (and re-releases) this week allowed Blu-ray revenue to rise above $50 million for the week, and for Blu-ray market share to surge above 40% once again.

This week's top seller was a major new release, Pixar's Finding Dory, which easily outsold everything else this week.

In a very distant second place was Game of Thrones: The Complete Sixth Season.

In fourth place was the Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens - 3D Collector's Edition

There was only one other new release in the rest of the top 20. The Wal-mart exclusive Batman: Assault on Arkham with Suicide Squad Digital HD was in 14th place.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: As two of the new releases this week were from Disney (and the other was a TV show box set), there was nothing significantly new on UHD Blu-ray this week. But despite this, 6 of the top 10 this week still all had UHD versions.

'Finding Dory' had the best BD sales share of this week's releases, with 69.77%. 'Game of Thrones: The Complete Sixth Season' did very well for a TV box set, with 54.91%, but it was down on the previous season which recorded a first week BD sales share of 59.74%.

None of the mentioned new releases were available on Ultra HD Blu-ray, but the new Collector's Edition for 'The Force Awakens' was available on 3D, with an amazing 73.25% 3D sales share.

Blu-ray sales increased by $15.99m (up 45.8%), while DVD sales decreased by $2.22m (down 3.3%) producing $13.77 million more in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share increased from 34.16% to 43.89%.

Top 10:

It's Black Friday week, so as it's usually the case, there were no new releases. But also usual is the high amount of sales, this time helping Blu-ray to break through the $100 million mark again.

And following the trend for 2016 so far, something I discuss in more detail here, 2016 BF Blu-ray revenue was up against revenue from 2015, I suspect largely on the backs of increasing Ultra HD Blu-ray sales.

Of the top 10 Blu-ray sellers during the BF sales, 7 of them had Ultra HD Blu-ray editions (damn you Disney for not playing ball), and these are all some of the year's biggest hits. I believe this is helping Blu-ray revenue, as this is the first Black Friday in some time that has seen a rise in Blu-ray revenue.

The fact that DVD sales continues to fall, by $18.24 million this year (down 9.5% compared to BF 2015, which was down 15% on BF 2014), suggests that it must be something new on Blu-ray only that's in play, and Ultra HD Blu-ray is the only thing new.

Combined disc sales are down $12.69 million compared to Black Friday 2015.

No notable new releases this week, but with many of this week's top sellers pulling a UHD sales share of between 2% and 6% (and with UHD pricing being higher), this may go some way to explain the 5.5% rise in Blu-ray revenue.

Top 10:

After Black Friday always comes Cyber Monday, and while Blu-ray/DVD sales aren't as spectacular, they are always still at one of the yearly highs during Cyber Monday week.

Blu-ray sales stayed above $60 million, and DVD sales stayed above $100 million, but weekly Blu-ray market share remain largely unchanged.

Unlike last week though, there were new releases. The title that led the other new releases, and also managed to get top spot on the Blu-ray sales chart, was 2016's Pete's Dragon.

The next best new release, in 3rd place, was also another Disney release (and with 'Finding Dory' in second place, it means the top 3 spots all went to Disney this week), The BFG.

Don't Breathe in 5th place was the only other new release in the top 20.

Two new releases that got lost in the madness of last week, were Kubo and the Two Strings and Mechanic: Resurrection in 8th and 9th respectively.

So how did Cyber Monday week 2016 compare to the same week in 2015? Well, it followed the trend set back BF 2016 to the letter, with Blu-ray sales up (very likely thanks to Ultra HD Blu-ray), and DVD sales down slightly. Blu-ray sales were up 5.1%, while DVD sales were down 8.4%.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: As the two major new releases were from Disney, and Disney still refuses to play ball when it comes to Ultra HD Blu-ray, there were no significant new releases on the format ('Don't Breathe' wasn't available on 4K either). 'Mechanic: Resurrection' from last week was available on 4K.

'Pete's Dragon' debuts on Blu-ray with an impressive first week BD sales share of 60.50%. Just ahead of the 58.82% from 'The BFG'. 'Don't Breathe' managed 35%.

None of these aforementioned new releases were available on 3D or 4K.

Top 10:

Two big A-releases, coupled with the real start of the holiday shopping period, meant that Blu-ray revenue remained at a high mark for the year, and that weekly Blu-ray market share almost topped 40%.

Box office smash The Secret Life of Pets topped the sales charts, with another new release, Jason Bourne, selling about half as many copies in second place.

This was actually pretty much it in terms of new releases in the top 20, with the exception of 2016 World Series Champions: The Chicago Cubs in 20th place.

There are also several Christmas themed older releases coming back to the top 10, including 'Home Alone' and 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas'.

So again, quality beats out quantity, and with the holiday shopping in full swing, the next few week should prove to be as big, if not bigger.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Both of the big hitters this week had 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray editions, with varying success.

'Jason Bourne' had the better BD sales share of the major new releases this week, with 66.47%. To be fair, 'The Secret Life of Pets' wasn't too far behind with 59.22%.

Even '2016 World Series Champions: The Chicago Cubs' got in on the act with an above 50% BD sales share of 52.77%.

As mentioned earlier, both of the big releases this week were available on UHD, with 'The Secret Life of Pets' also available on 3D. 'Jason Bourne' managed a UHD sales share of 6.28%, which is very respectable, but 'The Secret Life of Pets' only managed 2.03%. The 3D sales share of 'The Secret Life of Pets' was similarly disappointing at 1.96%.

Despite this week's good results, they were still not as good as the results from the same week last year when 'Minions' and "Ant-Man' were released. It unfortunately meant that this week was an "all red" week where both Blu-ray and DVD revenue, as well as weekly Blu-ray market share, feel compared to the same week last year.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $19.3m (down 21.1%), while DVD sales decreased by $17.59m (down 14%) producing $36.89 million less in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share decreased from 42.01% to 39.90%.

The holiday sales period is in full swing, and as the summer tent-pole releases gets released on Blu-ray, we have another A-list title debuting on Blu-ray this week to help Blu-ray revenue rise above $90 million for only the second time this year (the other time having occurred only 4 weeks ago).

Suicide Squad easily topped the sales charts this week.

The next new release was Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children in 3rd place. Then it's all the way down to 10th for the next new release, the 2016 version of Ben-Hur.

That was it for new Blu-rays in the top 20, but on the combined Blu-ray and DVD chart, all the way down in 20th place was Bridget Jones's Baby.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: The top 2 new releases were all available on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, and the top 4 Blu-rays all had 4K versions.

'Suicide Squad' debuts on Blu-ray with a BD sales share of 60.17%. 'Ben-Hur' also got over the 50% mark with 50.93%.

'Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children' didn't quite make the mark, with 46.90%.

Both 'Suicide Squad' and 'Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children' were available on 3D and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. The 3D sales share for 'Suicide Squad' was 2.41%, whereas the UHD BD sales share was 5.45%. The same trend is repeated for 'Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children', with a 3D sales share of 2.05% versus a 4K sales share of 4.05%. 4K editions have consistently outsold 3D editions!

Top 10:

The holiday sales period is in full swing, and despite the lack of an A-list release, Blu-ray revenue soared to above $110 million for only the second time this year (and the other time was only four weeks ago).

While none of this week's new releases can be classified as A-list, they were just at the cut off, with Sully being the most popular at the box office (over $120 million worth, but nothing compared to the $360+ million for 'The Secret Life of Pets', for example). It was, however, not the best selling Blu-ray for the week - that accolade belonged to the 2016 version of The Magnificent Seven. In fact, 'Sully' only finished 5th on the Blu-ray chart.

Closely behind 'Sully' was Storks.

All the way down in 20th place was the next new release, 31.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: The top 3 new releases were all available on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, and 7 out of the top 10 Blu-rays all had 4K versions - the 3 other being Disney releases. Once Disney gets in on the 4K act, and they will in 2017, it's only a matter of time before every title in the top 10, or even in the top 20, will have 4K editions.

None of this week's previously mentioned new releases got above the 50% Blu-ray sales share mark. The title that came closest was ''The Magnificent Seven', with 48.16%, which explains why it topped the Blu-ray sales chart.

'Storks' managed 41% while 'Sully' got 39%.

All three of these top selling new releases had 4K editions, with 'Storks' also having a 3D edition. 'The Magnificent Seven' had the best 4K market share of the three releases, with 6.22%. 'Sully' managed 3.89% while 'Storks' got 1.91%. The 3D market share for 'Storks' was 1.49%, yet again proving that 4K UHD is beating 3D for almost every new release.

An "all green" week, thanks to this week's trio of releases being a lot better than the single release ('War Room') from the same week last year (that same week also included the slow sales Christmas Day holiday, and this year did not). The revenue increases were, however, insignificant.

Blu-ray sales increased by $2.28m (up 2.1%), while DVD sales increased by $2.04m (up 1.2%) producing $3.48 million more in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share increased from 39.01% to 39.22%.

With Christmas Day being part of the week, the last week of 2016 was a relatively quiet week in terms of revenue, at least compared to recent weeks.

It was also quiet concerning new releases, with only 2 new releases in the top 20, and the most popular one only coming in at 9th. That as Snowden.

The other one in 13th place was When the Bough Breaks.

In the Blu-ray and DVD top 20 (at 17th place), but not in the Blu-ray top 20, was In a Valley of Violence.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: None of this week's new releases were available on Ultra HD Blu-ray. But with some Disney titles moving further down the top 10 list, all of the top 7 titles this week had UHD versions. It seems UHD is ending the year on a (relative) high!

It's sad that we have to end the year on an "all red" week, but it's not exactly comparing apples to apples, due to the way the two weeks include different holidays (Christmas and New Years).

Blu-ray sales decreased by $11.48m (down 24.7%), while DVD sales decreased by $16.99m (down 22.3%) producing $28.47 million less in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share decreased from 37.90% to 37.17%.

The first week of 2017, as is the case with the first week of any year, is a quiet one. There were only two new releases in the top 20, and the best selling of which was Blair Witch in 8th place.

The other release was Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life in 10th place.

With so few notable new releases, and with the usual post holiday lull, Blu-ray revenue fell substantially compared to recent weeks.

Top 10:

The second week of 2017 was much like the first, despite more new releases, Blu-ray weekly revenue and market share was still at recent lows.

Deepwater Horizon was the week's top seller, although it was closely followed by another of the week's new releases, The Accountant.

The Birth of a Nation in 8th place was the next best selling new release.

Max Steel was in 9th, while Kevin Hart: What Now? rounded out the top 10 in 10th place.

Homeland: The Complete Fifth Season got as high as 12th on the combined Blu-ray and DVD chart, but failed to make the Blu-ray top 20.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: The three most popular new releases this week all had Ultra HD Blu-ray editions, with 'Deepwater Horizon' joined by 'The Accountant' and 'The Birth of a Nation'. Eight of the Blu-ray top 10 all had UHD editions!

BD sales share for a title is the percentage of disc packages sold for this movie that contained the Blu-ray edition of the film (including combos, and Ultra HD editions). So a BD sales share of 60% indicates that 60% of disc packages sold for this particular film contained the Blu-ray edition for this film, and so anything over 50% means that the Blu-ray version of the film was more popular than the DVD version.

The top 2 sellers this week were close in terms of sales, and they were even closer in terms of BD sales share. 'The Accountant' actually won this race, with 48.60% compared to 48.40% for 'Deepwater Horizon'.

'Max Steel' managed 45.58%, while 'The Birth of a Nation' wasn't too far behind at 45.44%.

'Kevin Hart: What Now?' got 41% while 'Homeland: The Complete Fifth Season' got 25%.

As mentioned earlier, both of the top 2 sellers, and 'The Birth of a Nation' were available on Ultra HD Blu-ray, with 'The Accountant' getting a UHD BD sales share of 6.20% and 'Deepwater Horizon' not too far behind at 6.09%. 'The Birth of a Nation' actually did best on 4K, with 6.65%. None of this weeks previously mentioned new releases were available on 3D.

Blu-ray's market share decreased from 38.95% to 35.26%.

Top 10:

Blu-ray and DVD revenue continues to drop, despite the availability of a couple of new releases.

The Girl on the Train was the week's top new release, and also the week's number one title on Blu-ray and DVD.

There were four more new releases in the top 20, including Keeping Up With the Joneses in 6th, Ouija: Origin of Evil in 10th, and outside of the top 10, Roger Corman's Death Race 2050 in 16th and The Whole Truth in 19th place.

On the combined Blu-ray and DVD chart, but not in the Blu-ray top 20, was The Hollow Point in 16th place.

So not the best collection releases, which explains the low revenue figures.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Again, the three most popular new releases this week ('The Girl on the Train', 'Keeping Up With the Joneses' and 'Ouija: Origin of Evil') all had Ultra HD Blu-ray editions. Every single title in the Blu-ray top 10 this week had UHD editions - amazing!

Despite not selling in great numbers, 'Roger Corman's Death Race 2050' had the best BD sales share, with 50.67%. It wasn't too far ahead of 'The Girl on the Train', which just failed to get over the 50% mark with 48.92%.

'Keeping Up With the Joneses' was the next best, with 44.10%.

'Ouija: Origin of Evil' just failed to get into the top 20 with 42%, while 'The Whole Truth' got 28% and 'The Hollow Point' had to settle for 27%.

The top 3 selling new releases, and 'The Whole Truth', were all available on Ultra HD Blu-ray. 'Keeping Up With the Joneses' had the best UHD BD sales share, with 5.17%, followed by 'The Girl on the Train' with 2.99%. With the news that 3D is on the way out, none of this week's new release had a 3D edition.

Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue made a slight recovery this week thanks to the release of Inferno. While the latest Dan Brown book to movie was a huge box office disappointment, it did manage to grab the Blu-ray and DVD top spot for the week.

But that wasn't hard to do considering it was the only new release in the Blu-ray top 10 - the next new release was made for TV movie USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage 16th.

The last new release in the Blu-ray top 20 was Sherlock: Season Four in 19th.

There were two other new releases in the combined Blu-ray and DVD top 20, with I'm Not Ashamed in 18th and The Light Between Oceans in 20th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Of the previously mentioned new releases, only 'Inferno' was available on Ultra HD Blu-ray. Despite this fact, every single title in the Blu-ray top 10 had Ultra HD editions. In fact, 17 out of the top 20 titles all were available on 4K (the two other new releases in the top 20, plus 'Kubo and the Two Strings', failed to provide a 4K option). I predicted a few weeks ago that we'll soon get a week where every title in the top 20 had a Ultra HD edition - I thought this might occur this time next year, but it looks like this may happen a lot sooner!

'Inferno' did break through the 50% mark, which is relatively disappointing for a new Blu-ray release - it managed 46%. But it was still the best out of this week's new releases, with 'USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage' managing 37%, 'The Light Between Oceans' getting 36% and 'Sherlock: Season Four' getting 29%.

'I'm Not Ashamed' brought up the rear with 26%.

As for 3D and UHD, none had a 3D release, while only 'Inferno' had a 4K Ultra HD version, which topped the UHD BD sales share chart with 5.76%.

Top 10:

Both Blu-ray and DVD revenue increased slightly compared to last week, thanks to a trio of new releases that occupied the top 3 spots on the Blu-ray sales chart.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back was the best selling of these top 3 new releases, and the top seller on Blu-ray for the week. It was followed by the Signature Edition of Pinocchio in second place.

Boo! A Madea Halloween was a little further behind in 3rd place.

Another Tyler Perry production sits just outside of the top 10 at 11th, Tyler Perry's Madea on the Run. Closely behind was Masterminds in 12th place.

Not in the Blu-ray top 20, but in the combined DVD and Blu-ray top 20 at 19th place was Victoria: The Complete First Season.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: It was a somewhat slower week for Ultra HD Blu-ray this week, with only one of the previously mentioned new releases available on 4K. Top seller 'Jack Reacher: Never Go Back' led the six other releases in the top 10 that had Ultra HD editions.

Re-release 'Pinocchio', unsurprisingly, had the best BD sales share for the week with 86.88%. 'Jack Reacher: Never Go Back' managed 59.47%, which was a very decent set of results too.

'Masterminds' was the next best on the list, with 41.85%.

'Boo! A Madea Halloween' was the better of the two Tyler Perry productions, with 20% compared to the 12% figure for 'Tyler Perry's Madea on the Run'.

'Victoria: The Complete First Season' managed 13%.

As mentioned earlier, the only Ultra HD release of the week, 'Jack Reacher: Never Go Back', got a UHD BD sales share of 6.39%.

Top 10:

Blu-ray and DVD revenue rose compared to the last week, thanks largely to one title, Trolls. The film, which did more than $150 million at the domestic box office, was the clear top seller for the week, which also included three other new releases in the Blu-ray top 10.

The second place belonged to one of these new releases, Justice League: Dark. The next new release, Almost Christmas, was in 6th place.

Outside of the top 20 was the last new release, Life on the Line in 20th.

Loving was 17th on the combined Blu-ray and DVD chart, but failed to get into the Blu-ray top 20.

John Wick was re-released on Ultra HD this week, and this alone helped it to get back into the top 10, at 5th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Other than 'John Wich', only one of this week's new releases, top seller Trolls, was available on Ultra HD Blu-ray. Half of this week's top 10 selling Blu-ray titles had 4K editions.

'Justice League Dark' was the best in terms of BD sales share out of this week's new releases, with 69.22%. Top seller 'Trolls' also sold better on Blu-ray than on DVD with 53.29%.

For the other new releases, 'Almost Christmas' was best with 36%, followed by 'Life on the Line' with 27% and 'Loving' with 26%.

Again, none of this week's notable new releases were available on 3D, As mentioned earlier, re-releasing 'John Wick' on Ultra HD Blu-ray seems to have paid off with a top 5 finish, and a huge (record breaking) UHD BD sales share of 42.15%. 'Trolls' managed a UHD sales share of 1.96%.
