Top 10:

Blu-ray sales improved slightly off of the last few week's low (still the worst set of results since 2009) as new releases are still thin on the ground.

The best selling new release was Star Trek: Picard - Season One. Streaming shows usually don't sell well on Blu-ray, but Blu-ray sales have been so low that "Picard" managed to grab second place on this week's Blu-ray top 10. The top spot actually went to perennial favourite, "Hocus Pocus", but only just (less than 1% difference).

Third and fourth places were also new releases, with Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna easily beating The Tax Collector.

The 4K re-release of 300 was 6th, while the new version of The Secret Garden was 7th.

The Best Buy exclusive 4K SteelBook re-release of Interstellar was the only other new release in the top 20, coming in at 14th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Other than the 4K re-release of "300", only "The Tax Collector" was made available on 4K, and it was a Best Buy SteelBook version. Only 4 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

So a BD sales share of 60% indicates that 60% of disc packages sold for this particular film contained the Blu-ray edition for this film, and so anything over 50% means that the Blu-ray version of the film was more popular than the DVD version.

"Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna" had the best BD sales share out of not only this week's new releases, but all Blu-ray titles this week, with a BD sales share of 95.22%.

"Star Trek: Picard — Season One" did okay as well, with 55.67%, just ahead of "The Tax Collector" with 51.92%.

"The Secret Garden" had to settle for a below 50% share of 48.84%.

On 4K, despite being a Best Buy exclusive, "The Tax Collector" still managed a UHD sales share of 10.74%.

In our new regular feature where we pine for days past, this time last year we had new releases "Toy Story 4", "Annabelle Comes Home", and "Midsommar" in the top 10.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $22.74m (down 65.1%), with unit sales down 57.7%.

DVD sales decreased by $9.52m (down 31.5%), with unit sales down 27.8%.

This meant $32.26 million less in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share decreased from 53.61% to 37.06%.

Top 10:

The Amazon Prime Day sales event helped Blu-ray and DVD sales rise to respectable levels for the first time in a long time, as the online-only sale managed to circumvent the pandemic and the lack of new releases caused by it.

Sales were still down compared to last year's Prime Day event, which took place in July. That particular week saw Blu-ray sales worth $34.27 million, and this year's event was down 26.5%.

There were two new releases in the top 20 though. Batman: Death in the Family sold enough copies to reach second place, while Friday the 13th Collection Deluxe Edition wasn't too far behind in 3rd.

But it was mostly older titles that were heavily discount during Prime Day that sold well for the week, including the likes of Fast & Furious: The Ultimate Ride Collection and Jurassic 5-Movie Collection.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: No new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray releases in the top 20 this week. Only 3 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

Finally, we break the unwanted record. Blu-ray sales actually managed to increase compared to the same week last year, due to Amazon Prime Day happening at a different time this year.

Blu-ray sales increased by $1.51m (up 6.4%), with unit sales down 13.6%.

DVD sales decreased by $3.35m (down 11.7%), with unit sales down 22.3%.

This meant $1.84 million less in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share increased from 45.24% to 49.88%.

Top 10:

Following Amazon's Prime Day sales event, Blu-ray revenue fell back below $20 million yet again as the re-release of the Back to the Future: The Ultimate Trilogy on 4K and standard Blu-ray, the best seller this week, couldn't sell enough copies to keep revenue high.

There were actually quite a few more new releases in the top 20, including Tremors: Shrieker Island in 4th, and the SteelBook version of Princess Mononoke in 9th.

The same range of SteelBooks also landed My Neighbor Totoro in 12th, while we had Chucky Complete 7-Movie Collection in 11th.

Cut Throat City was the last new release in the top 20, at 18th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Only "Back to the Future: The Ultimate Trilogy" was made available on UHD. Only 3 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The "Back to the Future" ultimate trilogy box set was also made available on DVD (along with standard Blu-ray and 4K versions), Universal might as well have not bothered since the Blu-ray editions had a BD sales share of 95.71% - meaning only 4.29% of buyers chose to buy the DVD edition.

For the other non Blu-ray exclusive releases, "Cut Throat City" had the best BD sales share with 49.16%, just ahead of "Tremors: Shrieker Island" with 44.46%.

For 4K, "Back to the Future: The Ultimate Trilogy" had an amazing 79.64% UHD sales share, meaning almost everyone thought the 4K edition of this re-release was the edition to buy (the breakdown is as follows: 79.64% of all BTTF box sets sold were the 4K edition, with 16.07% the standard Blu-ray version, and 4.29% the DVD version).

This meant $21.3 million less in combined revenue for the week.

A very quiet week (new release wise) saw Blu-ray revenue drop back towards historical lows.

Only two new releases were in the top 20, and the best selling of which, and the week's overall top seller, was My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising.

The other was the Criterion release of Parasite, in 9th.

Top 10:

Blu-ray sales improved ever slightly compared to last week, while DVD sales declined. This allowed weekly Blu-ray market share to rise back above 40%.

The Blu-ray top 10 was all over the place this week, most likely because of the low sales numbers involved, but the top-selling title was still My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising.

The top-selling new release, in 7th place, was the 4K re-release of V for Vendetta, while "new" new release Antebellum was in 8th place.

Game of Thrones: The Complete Series, another new release, was in 9th place.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "V for Vendetta" was, of course, available on UHD, but so was "Antebellum". 8 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

Top 10:

A big improvement for Blu-ray this week because we have the first A-list release for a while, even if that release was originally released as a premium streaming title.

Disney's live action remake of Mulan easily topped the sales chart, while there was another major new release in 9th place, Bill & Ted Face the Music. Mulan's success shows that despite not having a theatrical release, and despite it becoming available for streaming by Disney+ subscribers soon, many were still attracted to the physical media edition.

Sales of older titles also saw many titles return to the top 10, including Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 8th.

For once, we have a week without every metric below being worse off than the same week last year. In fact, everything was improved!

Blu-ray sales decreased by $2.15m (up 8.9%), with unit sales up 54.4%.

DVD sales decreased by $2.1m (up 6.5%), with unit sales up 33.3%.

This meant $4.25 million more in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share increased from 42.74% to 43.29%.

Top 10:

The New Mutants was the top-selling new release for this pre Black Friday week, although it failed to unseat "Mulan" from the top spot.

There was only one other new release in the top 10, Unhinged, in 16th place.

For the second week in a row, Blu-ray sales rose compared to the same week last year. Spoiler alert: it won't hold for next week, Black Friday week.

This meant $9.34 million more in combined revenue for the week.

Top 10:

It's Black Friday week and hopefully the only during the pandemic, but it looks like COVID-19 has had a big effect on BF sales.

Traditionally, BF week is not about new releases, and there weren't any in the top 20 this week and all about big sales and sales of older titles.

The top seller of the week was Joker, with "Harry Potter Complete 8-Film Collection" making a comeback to the top 10, and older titles like Doctor Sleep and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald getting back into the top 20.

Comparing this Black Friday to the last one, things don't look too well. Blu-ray sales were down 56.5% and DVD sales down 62.5%. Black Friday 2019 was already down 24.3% for Blu-ray revenue compared to BF 2018, but sales being half of what it was, has to be related to the pandemic. Total sales were down more than $100 million compared to the last Black Friday!

As mentioned earlier, disc sales were down dramatically compared to the same week last year (which was also a Black Friday week), but Blu-ray market share was up (because DVD sales dropped more than Blu-ray sales).

Blu-ray sales decreased by $44.73m (down 56.5%), with unit sales down 64.8%.

DVD sales decreased by $60.52m (down 62.5%), with unit sales down 75.5%.

This meant $105.25 million less in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share increased from 44.98% to 48.68%.

Top 10:

It's Cyber Monday week where more Blu-ray sales happen, and Blu-ray revenue rises to a high for the year. At least that's the case for a normal year. 2020 is not a normal year.

As with most Cyber Monday weeks, there won't be a huge list of new releases. For this week, the 4K re-release of The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy was not only a new release but a top seller for the week. It, along with the 4K re-release of The Hobbit: The Motion Picture Trilogy, was the only new releases for the week.

So how does the COVID-19 Cyber Monday week compare to last year's very normal CM week? Well, Blu-ray revenue was down 31.1% from $48.66 million to $33.53 million. This might not sound too bad given last week's (Black Friday's) 56% drop, but considering CM 2019 only dropped by 8.5% compared to CM 2018, the 31.1% drop is significant. DVD sales didn't fare much better, having dropped 24.7%.

When grouped together with all past editions of the trilogy box sets, "The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy" had a BD sales share of 93.11%, and a UHD sales share of 82.50%. "The Hobbit: The Motion Picture Trilogy" had a UHD sales share of 78.58% and a UHD sales share of 62.97%.

Top 10:

The holiday shopping period is in full swing, and this is usually a period of very few new releases, but still a good amount of sales due to the increased amount of shoppers. So with more than $26 million in sales this week, it's by no means a super sales week (down 35% compared to the same week last year) but compared to the pandemic average, it's actually not too bad.

We did have a couple of new releases though. The re-edited "Godfather III" arrives on Blu-ray in the form of Mario Puzo’s The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone, coming in at 3rd on the Blu-ray chart. Yellowstone: Season 3 came in 6th (but earned a first-place finish on the DVD sales chart). And finally, in 9th, the 4K re-release of Total Recall was the only other new release in the top 20.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Both the "Godfather III" re-edit and "Total Recall" were Blu-ray exclusives, with only the latter being available on 4K. "Yellowstone: Season 3" was not made available on UHD. Only 4 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue bounced back above the $30 million dollar mark for the week ending December 19, 2020, thanks to the holiday period shopping surge, but perhaps more importantly, the release of the A-list movie Tenet, arguably the only major release to occur theatrically during the pandemic (and one that ultimately failed to bring in the big bucks for Warner Bros., hence their decision to release everything in 2021 on streaming simultaneously).

It was easily the top-selling title for the week, outselling the Christmas favourite "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" by quite a big margin.

It was also, as expected (due to the traditional reason of avoiding other big releases and the actual lack of new releases right now), the only major new release in the top 20, with the only other new release being the SteelBook edition of Spirited Away, at 16th.

The rest of the top 10 has a very "Christmasy" look to it, which is not surprising for this time of the year, although normally, the top 10 would be filled with big recent releases.

Comparing this week to the same week last year, where we actually had the likes of "Rambo: Last Blood" and "Ad Astra" (both "smaller" movies than Tenet in a typical year) as the headlining new releases. Blu-ray sales were down 43.5%, with DVD sales down 36.1%. Not great, but certainly could have been worse without "Tenet".

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "Tenet" was made available on UHD as expected. 4 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

To break it down, 45.53% chose the 4K edition, 36.87% chose the standard Blu-ray edition and 17.6% chose the DVD only edition.

Top 10:

The last full week, and the last week before Christmas, is a busy week for sales, but usually devoid of new releases. This year, it's no different, except "busy" is now very much a relative term due to the pandemic.

A special limited edition of Akira and The War With Grandpa, in 15th and 16th respectively, were the only new releases in the top 20.

Compared to the same week last year, the pre-pandemic one, Blu-ray sales were down 24.8%, with DVD revenue down 14%.

Top 10:

Blu-ray and DVD sales remained largely unchanged from the previous week, still at levels that are historical lows. The fact that there was only one new release in the top 20 didn't help matters.

That new release was Love and Monsters, which did enough to become the new top seller for the week, unseating "Tenet" from its multi-week run at the top.

January has never been a traditionally strong month for new releases and sales, but Blu-ray revenue was still down by more than 35% compared to the same week last year.

Blu-ray revenue dropped below $14 million for the week ending January 6, as the top-selling new release, Lupin III: The First, came third on the Blu-ray sales chart. Funnily enough, this movie didn't really sell that well on DVD, coming in at 20th - the 96% Blu-ray sales share kind of explains this weird result.

It was one of three new releases in the top 20, with Spell in 10th and Ultraman Taro: The Complete Series in 17th.

In our new regular feature where we pine for days past, this time last year we had new releases "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil", "Gemini Man", and "Dragon Ball Super: Part 10" in the top 10. We're now at the part of last year where people started taking notice of this new virus coming out of China, and we were one week away from the start of the greatest lockdown in history (at that time), which was to happen in the city of Wuhan, China.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $9.40m (down 40.2%), with unit sales down 35.1%.

DVD sales decreased by $1.68m (down 6.7%), with unit sales down 4.0%.

This meant $11.08 million less in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share decreased from 48.20% to 37.35%
