Google TV coming before Christmas

Google has scheduled the launch of its Google TV "service" before Christmas in the US, and to other countries throughout 2011.

The service aims to bring Internet browsing to TVs through a unified interface that also allows you to access online and offline media, as well as media recording functionalities. The media access feature has already forced Hollywood to come out attacking the service, saying that the common interface would allow both legal and illegal content to be accessed, and hence, legitimize pirated content.

Sony has already agreed to add Google TV to its range of TVs, with Samsung also expressing an interest.

Sony has announced their range of Google TV products, Logitech also bringing out Google TV products this month. Sony has a range of TVs and even a Blu-ray player that includes support for Google TV, with modified remotes that feature a keyboard:

I've already had the ability to do this, using Windows Media Center and my TV tuner card. I've got a CableCard from my cable provider so I can get high definition channels.

Plus, no space limitations, and I can cut the commercials out using VideoReDo

ABC and CBS are both blocking Google TV from showing their web streams, in the first salvo of copyright holder's war against Google TV. Both networks cite piracy risks as the reason for blocking Google TV, because they say Google TV allows pirated content to be played back. Except by blocking the legal content, surely this will drive users to the pirated content? I guess they're trying to make Google TV fail in the short term, but this smacks of short sighted thinking by the networks.
