" PNG's look fine for me"

your damn right they look fine. they are lossless, meaning no quality is lost. paint produces huge ones while photo editing software actually uses the lzw algorithm and outputs much smaller files

Why not use uncompressed PNG, then use some other free program to compress? I don't have Photoshop, and would never pay $100+ for it... I tried it at a friend's house.

And what avs should I use?

PS UncasMS, why do you have a WB logo as your avatar? Just curious.

name just ONE that will handle 8bit png and i'd gladly add it to my list of *decent tools*

              avs?
              like in avisynthscript

i liked the animation and turned parts of it into my avatar
more importantly this logo represents a real classic company in movie business to me

How does one aquire the rights to use an animated avatar?? It says I cannot use one. I'm too noobish

Does anyone use Ulead?? the gif animator and the animation studio work pretty well for me. Not at a quality level with PS but much much cheaper

Cool3D was pretty fun to play with, although I am easily amused.

drfsupercenter: use infranview to compress png. not exactly necessary but pngout plugin will compress a little more. and dont diss photoshop, its the best graphic design app out there, the world standard

i am still lookking forward to a FREEWARE tool which will provide a 8bit png output similar to photoshop

i have searched for a freeware solution for quite some time and so far havent come across one single tool; so i'd really appreciate any input on this

irfanview, xnview etc simply DONT use a decent png compression and thus it is rather useless (to plain stupid) to output to png with these tools if you want small file size; jpg and gif are to prefer with these tools

photoshop, however, let's me output to a small png 8bit output and thus enables me to produce smaler file sizes for some screenshots/forum pictures

Dunno why they need to be smaller though, mine work fine.

PS - why is Futurex banned?

their output file size is as small as photoshop, at least for 24bit
