I use DVD Shrink to backup DVDs in case they get damaged (scratched, lost, etc) and allways play the copy instead of the origional. I do NOT rent movies just to copy them myself. However, my main use of DVD Shrink is to make things I record from my tuner card (ATI 9000). I've been collecting the Bonanza series for example. After using TMPGEnc DVD Author to remove the commercials and make a menu for it, 3 episodes usually are in the 5.5 to 6.0 gig range and DVD Shrink fits the entire thingie on a single DVD without freezing or skipping.
To the one who said something like "Who's gonna know", God will and that's enough for meComment

See that’s where the confusion comes in,...your getting the series from tv,....what’s the difference when your getting them from your friends DVD collection and getting them from the video store? Isn't it the same from all three? Kinda like recording a whole album by recording all the songs off the radio so you don't have to spend the money music companies would like you to at the store? I know I have ton's of times dubbed friends cassettes tapes to my blank tape so I could listen to them and my friends would do the same with my tapes,...then when CD's came out we would record the CD on tape. The same thing can be said with HBO or Showtime. Record the movie so you can see it over and over as many times as you want! Millions upon millions of people do it and have done it for years,.....so now the Music and movie industry are crying about it? I am sure the band members of Metallica have recorded movies on video,...or dubbed music,.....maybe not now because they are stinkin rich,...to me these people are hypocrites,...I know the unpopular thing is to admit anything but I guess that’s the world we live in.Comment

@toc8g
I think the music and video industry got worried when a home consumer could easily copy their product with the same quality. Prior to DVD/CD, it was, as you said, tape, and the quality sucked in comparison. The industry didn't care because what the tapers got was a pretty lousy end product that degraded etc.
Now the industry is losing heaps due to piracy and people are getting a very high quality, virtually indestructible result. Pirates do not go to the cinema as much, nor do they buy the DVD. Hence the industry's stand.
But it is unlikely the industry is gunna go for consumers. They want to attack the "problem" at the source - and that is why they closed DVD Decrypter down.

I have wondered the same thing if you sell a DVD should you keep the back up or get rid of it? I have sold DVD's that I have backed up and I always gave that back up away with the original, that way if there is ever any question to my back ups there is a original here to prove ownership, the only time I encountered the problem of damaged or lost DVD I always bought a new one and then keep it in a locked cabinet, so it too would not become damaged.Comment

i wonder where all that fear of the americans is coming from..being caught,arrested for life and or paying up to 100.000$ for a "downloaded" mp3 song.
Well, if i take a close look at the US.In 37 states of 50 theres a death penalty.Thats something which bothers me...
so do the americans dont trust and believe their law system anymore? Are they frightened of everything?
So why not change it? Isnt it the nation which has to stay with and support this laws?
please explain

I live in the US and I'll be one of the first to admit the laws/politicians here are motivated by greed/money. Ask your self where does the most money come from and you will see who the politicians/laws favor. The bottom line is "money talks and bull**** walks".Comment
