Windows Update - gettin' sneaky and mean

A buddy of mine went to get XP updates yesterday and got nabbed with a pirated copy of windows ! It refused to let him get updates and he said there was something about Microsoft not prosecuting those that participate in the program and purchase Windows XP. If your not sure your installation is genuine, maybe stay away 'til you get a real one.

    A work-around:

    In IE6.

Tools -> Internet options -> Programs -> Additional components -> Select the component 'Windows Genurine Advantage' and disable/deactivate this one.

    Restart IE6.

    Run the windows update.

That other similar 'solution' is no longer working - due to an 'update' from Microsoft.

On a slightly different note, does anyone know if i can install my xp on a newer machine, now microsoft are doing this validating thing. The pc i now use will be stripped and i wanted to install the xp i use now on a new pc. What are the chances microsoft will let me do this?

It should work - you don't need to do the validation online during the installation. This 'new' validation is only in the Windows Update function.

Perhaps making a slipstreamed installation disc is the best.

When you say slipstreaming, did you mean removing certain installation files from an xp installation disc?

No, integrating all of the files relesead after that your originally installation disc was created. A Windows update on the original disc.
