75 gallon aquarium here. I have a Plecostomus and alot of tetras and swordfish,a couple community sharks and a bunch of other fishies in there,my hubbys passion actually,I just have to do the cleaning most of the time. Gessh his hobby but I get the hard part of keeping it up. Go Figure...

lol thread ressurection! cleaning is the crappy part indeed. i have to do mine tomorrow. tank full of tetras and a baby cichlid that i will let loose who i got as the size of a grain of rice is now about an inch long (i made a quarantine tank). he is highly territorial and when he starts kicking ass in there the tetras are history. will give them away and stock with some more convicts, jewels etc...."One day men will look back and say I gave birth to the 20th Century". I have a nice pond. About 3-4 feet deep about 1200 gallons. I have about 25ish fish in there. All different kinds of goldfish. No koi, too high maintenance for me. My walls aren't high enough for the little jumpers and don't think they would winter as well as the goldfish do.
Love it tho, had it for 10 years or so. Used to have 2 but didn't have time to take care of them like I should. Made one bigger one and it keeps me busy enough in the summer. Had a couple of coons visiting this summer after the farmers ran them out of the fields. Discouraged them with a couple of panels of chain link fence over the top. No supper for them!!
Lot's of water lillys, pinks, yellows, reds, peach, ect... full of plants. So many I have to thin them out every year.
They are cold little fishies right now. Wind chill is single digits tonight, brrrrrr...
Got a couple of heaters and my pumps still pumping so far......
It's a great hobby and so relaxing to sit out in the summer and listen to the water falling.

My bigger ponds have always been easier to take care of, less maintenance. I wouldn't mind one a little bigger but I wouldn't go much more. Over the years of trial and error I've learned a few things to make it easier. If you ever get one and you put it in a sunny area, buy a UV filter. They are worth their weight in gold in the heat of summer when the algae loves to thrive!
A salt water tank would be nice but a year round thing. The pond is pretty self sufficient in the winter. Just throw a couple of heaters in and wait for spring.
It would be nice to be in one of the more year round warm climates and be able to keep my hyacinths and tropicals every year.

I wasn't all that interested at first. I knew nothing about ponds or fish. I started with one of those hard plastic preformed ponds about 200 gallons.
I got lucky that right down the block from my work there was a petstore. Mom and Pop kind of place run by a lady and her 2 daughters. The mother had been in business for 30 years and they knew so much. They'd come in to our shop a lot and they were nice enough to teach me about ponds and fish. After that I was hooked. Of course I spend a good amount of $ there too!! I would give them plants out of the pond and daylillys when I thinned them. When I had a hurt/sick fish I'd pop it in a bucket and they'd take a look, tell me what was wrong and how to fix it. They would just give me a little of the meds or chemicle instead of making me buy a huge overpriced item.
Nice people. They retired last year but when I have a problem I give them a call or email and I still get the free advice!
